I won't call it a welcome to Demonland yet, but under the new Category B rules for Multicultural and Indigenous players, if Dan doesnt get the nod from another club in the national or rookie draft - Melbourne have nominated him. He is 175cm and no surprises a small forward. He came 2nd in the Morrish Medal behind McCluggage.

Knightmare: 

Dan Allsop was not one of the 80 players invited to this year's combine. He was not included in this year's Victoria Country squad either. He is however one of the most talented small forwards in this year's draft. At 175cm, Allsop is sixth in the TAC Cup goalkicking with 25 goals from 14 games. He is one of many strong contributors in Dandenong's balanced front half.

What makes Allsop special, as he showed on Saturday against Sandringham, is how clean he is below the knees.

Allsop is a genuine one touch player with a rare natural balance and coordination. He doesn't go to ground and keeps his feet when others don't. Consistently at the weekend, he was first to the ground ball and went to the right spots when the ball hit the deck. He showed some nice movement through traffic, evading would-be tacklers and shows class with ball in hand.

Also important is Allsop's forward pressure - he offers the second and third efforts and will work hard to keep the ball in the front half and force turnovers.

Analysis

Given these attributes, Allsop has genuine role player potential in the front half for an AFL team.

From a draft context, he is a possible situational draft selection and would be suitable for selection by a club looking for a small forward.

To this stage in his development, Allsop appears to be exclusively a small forward, which will hurt his draft ability so some extent with the focus recruiters have today on versatility.

On Saturday, his disposal and finishing in front of goal while often good, was not to the level it needed to be. Field kicks and snaps from 40m are shots he should be finishing every time, but in windy conditions he failed to do.

A lack of penetration by foot is also is something relatively lacking. He does not have a 50m kick and even at times seemed to struggle to make 40m with some of his snaps.

Allsop against Sandringham finished the game with two goals and three behinds. Watching his activity and where he was when he won the ground balls, it could easily have been a six goal-game had he converted his chances while still getting a score assist.

Allsop looks to be suitable for selection late in the draft or as a rookie.

It's an interesting way of doing things. I wonder if he's second place in the Morrish Medal will increase his draft chances?

Can someone explain to me how this aspect of the draft works.

Are they an extra rookie spot over and above the existing rookies.

I see from the linked article that Geelong and Essendon have nominated around 6 players each yet we have nominated only one. Can you take more than one?

Not part of the draft at all. Is similar to how we listed Maynard, and they do not take up a spot on the list. Not sure on numbers though

Happy with this. Although must say i'm more keen on Kirby who Richmond have nominated.

For 2017:  "Clubs will be able to add players straight to their list as a category B rookie if they go undrafted, provided they have not already filled their quota of three".

ie if another club does not draft the nominated player in either the national and rookie drafts. We have 2 category B rookies.  If we get Allsop that will fill our quota of 3 (unless we delist Smith and then have 2 rookie B spots).

From 2018, " clubs will need to nominate and bid for their players on draft night using the bidding system that applies to father-son prospects and those from the four northern academies." 

This means we will be using 'draft points' in 2018 to get the nominated player.

So in 2017 the player is a 'freebie' if he is not selected by another club first in one of the drafts.

Our zone is South-east Melbourne (Dandenong Stingrays), Alice Springs (NT)

Back to young Allsop.  Given that Clarrie Choo Choo shot up the drafting ranks last year when he won the Moorish Medal there is every chance that Allsop, being equal 2nd this year, will not get thru to us.  If we really want him we can take him with one of our draft picks and add him to the main list.

Thanks for those explanations. I also understand that although you might list a player you do not have to take him. If so he is then available to other clubs.

I like the underlying logic of all these rookie categories but the rules can sometimes be hard to fathom.

Okay. So if no club pick him up then he is ours for free.

The thing is... There is likely to be around 70 picks in the main draft and 70 in the rookie. 

So how good is he?

Morrish Medal has no bearing on the draft - in 24 years, 15 Morrish Medallists have gone undafted (National and Rookie). 

I used to be of the opinion that height was really important. Caleb Daniel at 167cm changed all of that. Allsop is 8cm taller than Daniel, and Daniel has been a huge success.

Would be great if he came to us as a category b rookie.

I would have thought that at 38 years of age and playing a different code, he'd be more on North Melbourne's radar then ours???

Seems strange to me that if you're hoping a player sneaks through the draft without being picked that you'd go out and nominate them prior to the draft - alerting everyone to the fact.

Allsop is an absolute livewire. Watched him a few times this year and his got every toll required to be a great small fwd at AFL level. Let him develop a few years and he will be a consistent performer for our mighty Dees. He got 3 best on grounds at the medal last night as a small fwd all in games that had the national championship kids playing 2 of which were against Murruy and Sandy so the kids a big game player and also already has plenty of senior experience im told.

Removes the considerable incentive to hide them, which I think is fair for everyone involved.

I wouldn't get too excited by the Morrish Medal showing because a number of past winners have been undersized and never made it. Mungara Brown, Fortunato Caruso and Ben Cavarra are among recent winners who come to mind.

Looks to have a nice burst of pace and is dangerous around goals. 

I look forward to watching him learn some tricks off Jeffy & hopefully doing some damage for the Scorps next year with a view to pushing for senior selection.  I hope we take him whether it be in the National Draft, Rookie Draft or as a Category B Rookie.

noticed a few teams (Essendon, Richmond and Geelong) have access to 4 or 5 players a category b rookie's, while melbourne and most other clubs only have access to one each. This zoning thing can really give some teams a great advantage and handicap others.

We have Dandenong.  It's up to us to put in the work, but there's talent to be had there.  In particular, the club should put some time and effort into developing the African kids in the area.  Dandenong has a growing population of Sudanese refugees and their children.  If we were to put in the time and effort to work with the community and develop an academy presence there it would pay off down the track. 

 

Word is that melbourne are going to waiver their right to select daniel alsop as a cat B rookie. I personally am confused as i believed the next generation academy was almost like a free pick and was wondering why we would not exercise our right to pick up the young bloke and try develop him, even if he doesnt come off isnt there nothing to lose and a much greater possible gain? An explanation on the system and tactics woud be great thx.

WOW.  That would be disappointing.  We can have 3 B rookies.  We have Smith and Maynard.  So unless we have someone else in mind for the 3rd spot I see little risk in taking Allsop, especially as we have already nominated him.  I can't imagine mfc going back on that without a very good reason.  How confident are you in the source that mfc may waiver?

Surely there are other issues behind it other than a simple change of mind. I trust the current Footy team to make the correct decision, although I would be annoyed if the young fella has been told we will take him ala Rory Sloane, then simply decided on someone else without good reason.
