  2. Both players suffered ACL's, at least a couple of times. But if both were uninterrupted by knee injuries, then IMO, Schwartz could have bee one of the AFL's best ever players.

  3. No 45 . 1991 Round 5 v Kangas at MCG The Demons still had a strong team around Stynes, Spalding, Lyon, Viney, B.Lovett, Lovell, G.Lovett. But the prior match in 1990 had seen the Roos destroy the Demons by 127 points. The Roos were establishing an arrogance. This match was a scoring bonanza with 9 goals each to quarter time. Amazing 18 goals in a quarter. I got RSI noting down all the goalkickers in the record. The Dees got on top and asserted a 3 goals half time lead. Whilst the Roos had Longmire and Carey as strong young key forwards, the Dees had relied on Darren Bennett and little Ricky Jackson. Yet the Dees found goals through a rampant forward setup. The Dees smashed the Roos in the 2nd half to win by 70 points. Excitement had returned. We felt like we now had the firepower in the forwards to translate our form to success. I recall commenting over a few beers that we were now a serious contender. In the backdrop of the Southern Stand rebuild, the Dees found Darren Cuthbertson 7 goals and Rod Owen 5 goals as new scoring options. 21yo Cuthbertson was as exciting as any young player in the game. A mid sized opportunist high flyer. Owen was a teenage sensation who had left the Saints to join the Dees after years of injuries and a few misdemeanours. Owen was fantastic, agile and strong across half forward. Aggressive but skilled. Could he be a player to propel us to the premiership? (Alas 5 games later, a Knee injury ended his year and his Demon career). Whilst undersized, Peter Rohde had controlled Carey and Dees had overturned the prior 20 goal defeat. Jimmy Stynes was huge and in excellent form. Newcomer Kevin Dyson was probably BOG. Dyson had destroyed the Blues in round 4 and this win over the Roos was only his 3rd game. A new 23yo midfielder who was strong and could kick the footy 70 metres was a big plus. Hope and excitement filled the G once again. Melbourne 28.14.182 defeated Kangaroos 17.10.112.

  5. Anyone who hasn’t read Schwarz’s biography ‘All bets are off’, give it a look. Astounding story and very easy to read. Recasts his career in a completely different light.

  6. Schwarz circa 1994 is close to my favourite all-time Demon player. Please posters, don't put a "T" in his name! *pedant rant over*

  7. Of course I'd like to win it and I think we're well placed to do so at the moment. Here we are in the first week of May and we've only lost one game and have had no new injuries for over a month now.

  9. The players get 28% of 'Budgeted' income (or thereabouts) ... not actual income. And the money is guaranteed. The only way for that to change is for the players to give some leeway or ... not pay them and let the whole thing play out in the courts. It's highly unlikely that the latter option would happen but some of the clubs may go to the wall unless they start getting some real income in. As it stands, the clubs are forking out at least a half a million dollars and up to a million dollars per month - ongoing. Coaching staff salaries & FD costs included. As well as Admin costs, CEO salary etc etc. And they are going broke in the process as the income has slowed to a trickle. Ongoing contracts are guaranteed as well. So we pay the players & coaches but the clubs go broke. It's any wonder that they want to play the games asap. But take away the guaranteed salaries and there's no such haste. A money decision disguised as a goodwill measure. But why wouldn't the AFL take out some sort of insurance or have an 'Act of God' clause. Why wouldn't they protect themselves? Looking ahead they will but that ship has sailed for now and now the AFL has had to take out a $600Million loan. Which will need to be paid back. And the next broadcast rights contract may not be as lucrative as previous broadcast rights. So considering the league and clubs are not-for-profit organisations, it seems a bit odd that extreme amounts of outgoing monies are 'Guaranteed'.

  10. I've got a very nice Giclee print of Dali's 'Christ of Saint John of the Cross' Quite a striking portrayal. And 'Money Heist' looks very interesting DZ ... there's some more decent lockdown viewing! There's a lot of great European Drama about ... I especially liked 'The Bridge' (Bron/Broen) A joint Swedish/Danish production. Modern day 'Noir' But I've come across about 20 drama series out of Europe that are worth looking at.

  11. No.46 2001 Round 2 v Crows at Football Park The Dees had had a shocker in round 1 against the Tigers and were keen to respond. The Crows at Football Park was a tough assignment. The team had a great first half leading by 6 goals. Whilst the Crows were always likely to make a comeback, the lead had be reduced to a few points when Simon Goodwin kicked a goal to put the Crows in front. 30 seconds to play. The Dees got take ball forward to a stoppage. From the umps bounce, Schwarz knocked it 10 metres forward to Leoncelli who ran and kicked from 40 metres and it sailed through for a goal. We had managed to snatch victory after giving away the lead. A rare victory in South Australia for the Dees. Relief yes but celebrating also followed. Melbourne 12.11.83 defeated Adelaide 11.14.80

  12. Interestingly, we’re seeing a bit of a discrepancy in the Demonland votes and the social media votes. I doubt we will in this one though. Robbo was a very good player and a fan favourite, but Neitz is an MFC great.

  13. “We as AFL players, undertook this contract in 2020, thinking we’d have a certain life, that’s what we agreed to and we signed the dotted line.” Phil Davis and Callan Ward respond to criticism over players reaction to hubs. GWS Giant Phil Davis has defended AFL players for being reluctant to resume the 2020 season in quarantine hubs away from their families. Not a fan of the hub idea myself but this is just a stupid argument... Nobody signed on to this year, we all thought we would have a certain life...but here we are and we will make the best of it as we can and do what we must do. All bets are off... Being an AFL player doesn't make you immune from the world and it's problems.

  14. Finding it harder every day to respect the AFL and its players. Dont want to play... no worries. Hand back every cent you have taken or intend to take for the rest of the season. Play 1 game, get paid for 1 game. "We as AFL players, undertook this contract in 2020, thinking we’d have a certain life, that’s what we agreed to and we signed the dotted line.” Yeah, and the members signed up for a full season of games. You guys want to eat your cake and have it too (everyone gets that saying wrong) Im frankly sick of their whining when so many Australians would do almost anything to be back at work. Bloody primadonas.

  15. Won’t need hubs by the time the AFL gets going in June/July surely. If there is no secondary surge in infections, state borders will be open and there will be limited social interactions and there will have to be if teams are allowed to train together and play. If interstate travel is available this hub idea is defunct. If there is a secondary outbreak, there won’t be any footy this year.

  16. Do you want to win the premiership? what a silly question. This year and next year . Asterisk or not . i want to walk around with a grin on my face because the Demons won the flag. simple. its taken far too long! I will be dead soon. Some friends have kicked the bucket recently and have not seen a flag since1964. Bar a couple of attempts. once you are over 65 a couple of decades and you can easily die. sorry it’s cold and wet and MFCSS kicked in. I will feel better after a good Shiraz

  17. Toughest choice yet. Brett was simply outstanding and for many years was, in my opinion, the best classic hbf in the league. Rarely beaten in any contest and his disposal was always to advantage. Nathan has been an outstanding warrior for our club whose efforts can not be overstated. But for all this, he was not better than others who played the same role. It breaks my heart to deny a champion and club captain but Brett was too good to overlook. Brett for me. Nathan to repechage.

  19. Not sure he's had a far superior career... Definitely a standout in a poor time for the club. Lovett was a fantastic player for us in better times.

  20. No.47 1973 Round 10 v Geelong at MCG The debut of Robbie Flower. Robbie was only 17 yo when picked as a skinny teenager. The Dees were desperate for a win (were 4 wins 5 losses) and smashed the Cats by 9 goals. Greg Swan kicked 8 goals and John Tilbrook kicked 6 goals. I did not see this game (my first year of going to games was a 6 year old in 1975) but my late father reckoned John Tilbrook was one of the best players that he saw in the red and blue. He must have been very good. Greats like Wells and Alves starred. Robbie’s debut was victorious and he played every game for the rest of the year. It was the start of a very special career for a very special Demon. Melbourne 20.19.139 defeated Geelong 11.15.81

  24. An article in today’s “Rage” made note of police raiding a party in Romsey Well I wish to clear the air before any scandal mongers start pointing nasturtiums at your good old innocent Uncle Bitter Firstly, it wasn’t a party at all. I mean who calls a gathering of 50 or so like minded friends a”party “ ? Secondly. Everyone was being quite responsible and keeping a good whip length apart Clearly all just a minor misunderstanding PS If one of my good lawyer friends on this site could see their way to a little pro bono work please contact me ( metaphorically that is) at The Manor
