I really like this bloke, he impressed me a lot last year at sandy playing across half back. If he hardens up and builds up his body he is very much in the Jared Rivers mould. I prefer him as a backman but can play forward, im not sure that he believes in himself yet, he played really well in two pre season games and his body language was almost of embarrassment.

Only when he strings a few games together and is shown faith by our coaching staff will he thrive. He hasnt yet got the body for key position but he reads the play so well that he would be well served as a backman that zones off and gets to the marking contest, rivers style to make the spoil. I cant believe Franklin was constantly left one out last weekend.

Im a big wrap for Garland and I certainly prefer him to others. Give him a go. The same goes for Newton.

We don't really have a choice but to give these guys a decent shot because the majority of the senior list are not up to it.

I think he looked well out of his league for most of last week, but I for one have not given up on him, but maybe a few more weeks at sandy is required.

He played a fantastic tackle in about the first minute of the game last week but went pretty quite after that. Would like to see him persisted with, but can't help but wonder whether the team would be better off with having Holland as a key defender while Garland develops and matures in the VFL.

I totally agree; from all reports, he's much bigger than last year, which is a credit to him considering BBs philosophy of Skinny footballers with no physical presence.

They are kids playing in a selfish team. We must get games into them! Someone needs to tell Newton though that we don't need another Robertson.

I liked the look of him in the first NAB cup game when he was playing foward, but thought he looked completely out of his depth last week.

However, the whole backline looked out of their depth, and Ricky Petterd was the one to get the chop this week. Garland is obviously a good, tall athlete, but has shown me nothing yet to suggest he'll be anything to get excited over.

He is a poor mans Wheatley at this point, and thats saying something.

 My God...is that really his philosophy ? ...Might work in Netball, won't win us a final let alone a Premiership!

Yeh, and at least Wheatley can kick (well, could kick). Garland missed targets 15 metres away from him under no pressure last week. Btw, I thought he was a forward. Let's hope DB doesn't swtich him between forward and defence this year, or we'll have another Miller issue on our hands.

Well I don't agree.

I've seen 50 + Colin Garlands come and go over 30+ years. He gives me less hope than most.

Does Frawley fall into this category?

Posted

how is Frawley going - I see his named on the wing for Sandy !?!?!? maybe we do need our own seconds.

Lamb playing full back ahead of Frawley does f$ck all for us at the Melbourne footbal club.

He is a bit bigger this year and needs to be in defence. I think he could develop into a real defensive type of player that can shut down one particular player.

The Rivers types are more creative, but we need Frawley to just take a man and be told to shut him down for the afternoon, and if they are a foot taller or 10 kg heavier, then so be it. He can then learn how to play on the big boys.

how is his development going ?

TU...you rotten bugger. I had just about erased the memory of those disposals from my mind...now they will replay again & again & again to the soundtrack of Beethoven's 9th.

And yes...I think if anything Garland's a HFF.

I agree Petterd had a bad game last week but at least he showed a lot last yeah. Garland hasn't shown anything yet. I'm not giving up on him but I think he needs more time at sandy.

As for Frawley, I'm puzzled as to why he can't get a game. In a depleted defence I thought he would put his hand for a run.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
