Travis is not the best footballer at the club. Certainly he has the most exquisite skills but in today's game that is not enough. His application has never, or rarely matched his talent - we have certainly not seen his best often enough. He turns 28 next year, we finished 3rd last and have an immature spine and ruck division so our Premiership window is probably going to open in 3 or 4 years by which time TJ will at the end of his career. The addition of Pick 14 gives us good flexibilty in the Top 20 and will hopefully produce a player who is in our 13th Premiership team.

Beautifully said, and spot on!

just heard on 3AW that deal almost done. jonno to brissy, woods to pies and reece shaw and pick 14 to dees

I will never understand any of you who are happy-happy-joy-joy about this news.

Trading TJ for Pick 14 (Mr. X who could turn out to be a complete hack) and a player from the Filth?

I will literally cry when I see him tearing it up for another team.

This is a sad, sad day and I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I never like to see a player leave the club, particularly after having been with us for 10 years, but "nothing changes if nothing changes!"

As stated earlier, we finished 14th and have gaps in our list.....something has to give.

There would be a supporter that could make a case for every player on our list to stay......even some who questioned the delisting of Godders.

Our 10 year Daniher era is over. Changes are needed. Is TJ going to turn things around and be the player we need him to be for the next 4-5 years? Highly unlikely!

Why do this deal??? Shaw is of no value to us, as simple as that.

Try and get the swans to give up pick 11. If we have pick 11, then maybe, just maybe Rance might be around when our pick comes. Trav for 11 yes (although reluctantly), pick 14 and Shaw (the wrong one) no. Unless of course, we throw in our 2nd round pick for their pick 8, then yeah i'd do that. But not for pick 14.

If we are to trade TJ, we may as well trade Bruce, coz he ain't gonna win us a flag.

Get pick 11 for him + Miller off the swans (with maybe Buchanan).

We'd have picks 4,11,14,21

Or we could give Johno up plus our 2nd rounder for Brissies pick 8.

We'd have picks 4,8,11. This way we would have gotten rid of players that realistically won't help us win a flag, plus we would have started our re-building phase, with next years draft just as important.

I for one are happy about this trade. TJ hasn't fullfilled his potential and probably never will.

As stated before, TJ won't be in his prime when we are looking at a realistic chance of a flag and i think it's a good move to get rid of him. We'll forget about him when McClean, Silvia and Jones are ripping it up. I also believe that by picking up Rhys Shaw, Bell may get a gig in the midfield where his hard tackling will pay dividends!!!

Who would we expect to get at pick 14?

I anticipate that we'll take a midfielder at pick 4. If we are legitimately going to take the best player available you would have to think that, assuming Morton, Kruezer and Cotchin are all gone, that would be either Masten (who has big, big raps on him) or Palmer (who's form through the U18 carnival and since has been exceptional).

We can hope beyond hope that Rance will still be around at pick 14 but I highly doubt it. Other alternatives might be McEvoy or Henderson, though there is every chance they'll be gone as well.

You know deestroy, I was thinking this tonight, driving home from soccer. I will be sad to see him go. Part of it is because I think he's a daft bugger and needs us to hold his hand, but also for TJ the player. He's given us nearly 10 years, and he's done some sensational things in his time here.

I am reluctant to part with him, but unfortunately we are in the business that is football, and hard decisions need to be made. I think in the long run his departure will be to our benefit. He will always be one of my favourite players to watch however... except against us.

According to Channel 10 (sports tonight I presume) he is 'almost certain' to go to Brisbane. Which is probably good. Pick 20 is not good enough. Pick 14 is, though I would hope CAC would negotiate to see if we could snag something that isn't Rhyce Shaw.

Looks like it's done then;

"The Magpies entertained Wood yesterday and remain confident of bringing the 20-year-old to Victoria, in part because Johnstone, who flew to Brisbane yesterday, has agreed to join the Lions."

I agree with the Shaw aspect of this, I don't see his value either........

As for the #11 pick, it would be great but I really don't see Sydney giving it up and Roos has said quite clearly in the Sydney press that he will not be parting with it.

The biggest issue with the Swans is their successful but rapidly aging list, they are in need of a re-generation more than just about anybody else at this point in time. And they simply can't afford to bottom out (because of the environment they exist in up here) for a couple of years to acquire the top line draft picks like other clubs can and to this end Johnstone is probably not as important to them or their future as their top pick right now.

I have read on here a thousand times over and over about getting our hands on Sydney's top draft pick, but honestly if anyone thinks that they are going to hand it over for anything less than a miracle then you are sadly mistaken. It has more value to them than I think most on here have any clue about.

Now you can believe what you will, and want what you want, and of course things could change depending on who might become available before the end of the week, but please stop living in cloud coo-coo land and realise that to Sydney, while Johstone would be valuable, their future stocks are probably more so.

And again, it has been stated by the Swans that they do not want to give up their first round draft pick.

But please don't let all this get in the way of any continued craziness ;) !!!

Looks like someone got some wires crossed. Shaw was a sweetner alright - for Brisbane NOT Melbourne:

http://realfooty.com.au/news/news/shaw-mig...1695990919.html

Melbourne also linked to Moran. Wonder what Meesen would make of that?

now that makes more sense to me.. couldnt understand the Shaw thing...now I do..

pick 14 ?? hmm Ol' Bails really had it in for Trap.

Still thats now 2 first round picks...curiouser and curiouser!!

Hey Guys,

I've been a long time reader but first time poster. Just had to post my thoughts on this topic, even though you guys will probably try and rip shreds through me for doing so. I am so glad that another demon fan out there shares my sentiments, been such a depressing few days and it seemed to be like that for myself alone until reading this post. Everyone's draft pick happy but what quality has pick 14 netted clubs since 2000 other than Daniel Harris for the kangaroos in '02? The others are ok players at best, delisted hacks in a number of cases.

And we're getting pick 14 in a supposedly weak draft after the first five or six selections? Tell you what, we won't be picking up a Franklin or Judd with that pick. Along with a Daniel Ward clone from he filth? No thanks, I think I'd rather keep Johnstone rather than roll the dice on those picks. And why do the club refuse to trade Miller and Jamar? I was really happy with the attitude the club had until now but the last week or so has started to indicate things might be going downhill again. Sorry guys, but just don't share your enthusiasm at this point in time. Sure, Trapper hasn't lived up to his potential but there are very few at the club that have of late.

Deestroy08, at least one other demon definitely DOES feel the same way.

BTW Yze magic, Trapper a lazy [censored]? That's a disappointing call to make on anyone that's given the club 10 years of their footballing life. When did you pull a jumper on last? And if this is Travis how would you classify Yze?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
