Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Ralph pretty well sums up whats wrong with us... we far too conservative..

Time to roll the dice.. I really cant see us losing if we did.

Yes we put into place a you beaut process designed to sort the Wheat from the Chaff, but how were we to know that the 'Wry' would become available !!

A smart operation thinks on its feet. A tree lasts because it bends to the storm, it doesnt resolve to maintain ridiculous rigidity when its not called for. Melbourne could take a leaf from the trees !!

Be Bold MFC .......do it !! and do it NOW !!!

Melbourne needs Sheedy like Mars needs air, and who better to get than Melbournes resident martian expert !! It all makes sense :-) The gods have spoken...are you listening Gardner & Co . ?????

John Ralph has obviously been reading WJ's match preview and his comments about the suitable fit Sheedy presents to the MFC at this time in its history. I agree however, that you simply can't announce an appointment of Sheedy in particular while his team's season hangs in the balance. Perhaps things might be helped along if the Hawks return to form today and give Essendon a hammering and then the Blues continue their improving trend with a win next week?

I was not an advocate for dispensing with ND's services before the end of the season because I believe you only move somebody on when there is somone else better to replace them with. That person is now available. Appointing anyone other than Sheedy means appointing an untried, untested senior coach who needs to be broken in to the role. Sheeds would hit the ground running - there is not another person I can think of who knows more about the game than Sheedy. He practically invented the modern game. I don't believe a Ratten, McKenna, Bond etc would give us more over the next 2-3 years than Sheeds could. The other benefit would be the attraction to players of playing under Sheedy. At the U18 carnival a survey was undertaken as to who the players would most like to play under in the AFL. More than 60% said Sheedy! Sign him up as soon as the Bombers season is over. There are at least 3 people living in my house who will become MFC members next year if Sheeds is on board (they all follow the red and black). I think we could potentially up our membership by 5000 to 8000 in the first year of Sheeds.

I read this sort of call to action and shortcut the process over the past few weeks to get Voss.

Heaven help us if we got a rush of blood and signed a bloke who was not sure if he really wanted the job and a pending legal trial over past misbehaviours

In case you haven't noticed there's a shitload of difference between Sheedy's credentials and those of Voss. It's a fair call to say that you shouldn't rush to making a decision on the coaching appointment but if you can iron out any issues as to his suitability why not secure the right man sooner rather than later?

Put quite simply... Sheedy is above the 'process'. If anything its the other way around; he's entitled to interview prospective clubs !!

The Sheedy scenario is different all around. everyone knows he's going end of year. No suprise there. Evreyone knows Melbourne and Co are interviewing for a coach, no surprise there.

Will Sheeds apply himslef 100% to Essendon for rest of year...Of course he will....again hardly a surprise.

What we have is a very unique set of circumstances. I was as keen as anyone for Voss to go through the process. If he came out other side, all well and good.

But its all changed. And as such all views to the situation MUST adjust accordingly.

If we miss out on Sheeds, for lack of trying and persistence it will go down in Melbourne's history as yet another stuff up.

I am pretty BZB, that if we miss out on Sheedy, it will only be because Sheedy didn't want the job!

I actually think that Paul, Steve & Co have given Sheeds the go ahead already.....

It is now up to Sheeds and for 2007 to finish.....

He will be our coach!!

We are Sheedy's only option to be head coach, da boos won't have him and he will not go to Fweo to be 2nd banana

Actually with all due respect I don't think is a particularly good article at all.

I disagreed mostly with the following quotes:

"Melbourne is many things, but it is rarely bold. It is never dangerous and edgy. "
Well having Gutnick as president was fairly bold I would have thought. When we appointed Daniher, White and Danny Corcoran in 1997 we were pretty bold too! From GF '97 to preseason MFC was the absolute talk of the town... then we had a GF and a brownlow in 2000. We've struggled in the last 6 years because we don't have the 3 out and out super stars that each Premiership team has in their lineups.

"Here is the chance. Take the risk, appoint him for two years, and if the decision backfires, what has it lost?"

We have a half decent list and pretty good young players. It's not 1997 again. In Modern footy, with the right coach we can turn this around pretty quick.

"Sheedy is a list manager par excellence, and could handle the transition of a playing group with talented kids and veterans in equal measures."

Whoa hold up a second there?? List manager par excellence??? I think his record as a list manager since 2000 has been pretty poor - not to mention as a coach! Would MFC supporters be happy with us picking up Scott Camporeale type players at the end of their careers???

However, I totally agree with the marketing and re-invigoration that Sheedy would bring, and I would actually be happy (and VERY excited) to see him at the helm, but I really query whether he has still got is as a coach.

Melbourne need to pick the best candidate, whoever it is. (My first choice is actually Chris Bond - very shrewd, smart customer).

AND then we need to draft well.

Sheedy does have a choice. He doesnt HAVE to coach. Id like to see him in red and blue. There might be some deserving others, but they dont have anywhere near the runs on the board as this guy. And they certainly wouldnt having the pulling power this guy has in the promotions world.

Absolutely agree!

The lure of Sheedy the marketer cannot come before that of the quality of his coaching. (Yes I know 4 premierships, the last one 7 years ago...almost as long as we had Danners!)

The right person for the job is the best coach...........good marketing comes from winning......sponsors are attracted to winning, and and the club makes money when we win!

There is no magic pill for success.......don't be fooled into thinking Sheedy is our winning lotto ticket!

I laugh when I read earlier that we need to be bold and the club is too conservative.......... that goes for our supporters as well!

Gardner comes out and is opinionated on a range of issues, and he is shot down by supporters with a message "Be seen and not heard Paul!"

I hear Patrick Smith absolutely pay out the club on SEN radio the other morning, and paint us out to be the basket case of the AFL......and not one supporter rings up to remonstrate!

If we get Sheeds, and come the middle of the 2008 season we are 2-10, all the media / marketing / promotion guile he has isn't going to do a thing.

And the only thing that will change for supporters is who we direct our vitriol at when the gamble hasn't worked.

Hawthorn, St.Kilda, Port Adelaide, Kangaroos, Geelong haven't taken the easy road in turning their fortunes around... they haven't had one "Kevin Sheedy magic man"come in and fix everything.....they have put in the hard yards, and through smart coaching / recruiting / marketing / management have turned their fortunes around, all to varying degrees, and through varied processes.

For the MFC, now is not the time for blind faith, and decisions made on a whim, or based on emotion..........it's the time for sensible, critical, and considered decision making.

We need the best coach.....if it's Sheeds.........then the party is on at my place! If not, let's get behind who the club selects, and get on with winning games of footy......this losing business f**king SUCKS!

Sheedy was without doubt one of the best Coaches of the 80s and 90s.

He is not now.

We need to get the best coach we can. We can't sacrifice that to appoint Sheedy because he will bring extra corporate support, media attention and memberships if he is not the best coach available.

Certainly Essendon's slide since the 2000 Grand Final does not reflect well on his list management or his mastery of the evolving tactics of our ever changing game.

Sheedy (and Ratten for that matter) still have their own teams to worry about right now.

Sheedy knows that Melbourne are interested, there's not much more that they can do.

No need to rush, yet.

pretty well sums it up.

And should some sort of heads of agreement be reached at some point. Why are they going to rush to press. We are only the public. We arent on THE need to know list. As members we would think to be informed at the earliest available and approporiate time and I expect we will.

I would like to think all parties are pragmatic.....truly.......Pragmatic !!

For many Voss was too.

I am not sure members/supporters who are not involved with the selection process could accurately suggest that circumstances have changed to abandon the process.

Sheedy clearly knows MFC is interested but there are many matters we dont know that are an important part of the recruitment process.

Well said. We install the RIGHT coach, start winning games again, and good things will happen to the club. Don't just appoint a coach because he is [censored] with his own club and the footy media says it is the best thing to do.

I'm obviously seeing it from a wrong perspective, but wouldn't getting Sheedy be the easiset, most safe and conservative thing this Club could do at the moment?

You are.

Appointing Mark Riley as coach would be the easiest most safe and conservative thing to the Club could do at the moment.

I dont think appointing a Coach who has just finished 27 years at another Club as an easy nor necessarily the right appointment at all.

Anyway why are those stereotyped pre conditions important?

And would be a genuinely and unfortunately terrifying prospect for our future.........

That article is the most succinct and logical appraisal that we can have in regards to our clubs current state.

So thanks for posting it here Bub :D !!!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
