Now that Carlton are in the market for a coach along with us and Freo it puts us in a awkward situation...

Market wise Fremantle and Carlton are both more prominent than Melbourne..

List wise i believe we are equal if not better than Freo but the general footy public will disagree. Carlton have the young list with high draft picks to work with...

What am i trying to get at you may be asking???

Mind you if we could lure Pagan to the junction that would be good. his market ability to sell the club and the fact he’s a dual premiership player is just the attributes of a coach we should be looking for.

I do not have confidence that Gardiner/Harris will be able to compete with Pratt/Swan and Hart/Schwab for the best coach available. It is very likely we will settle for third best.

The new facilities and the fact that next year is a historical one for our club might be trump cards.

Pagan would be my choice if he was up to it. He is ruthless with lists and is tactically very good - both qualities we need. Ask Archer how good a coach he is...

Pagan shoud not be our coach. his coaching performance for 5.5 yrs at carlton is a disgrace. they are still the worst team in the competition just as they were 6 years ago. how pathetic to have so many years to develop and have ome bottom 4 every year.

The success he had at the kangas was due to the fact he had about 4 absolute champions to work with (one including carey, someone you could base a team around)...it's one thing to be able to coach a great team, but the demons do not have a champion. we, like carlton, need a coach who can work with a team without a champion list. Pagan cannot do this!

If we go for Pagan I will give the game away. When you have the record he has at Carlton you should never coach a game again it doesn't matter how good his record was at the Kangas. Yes Carlton have had their problems but in his 5 years there has been no improvement at all if anything they have gone backwards. He is a hack the game has past him. We need someone fresh with a new outlook not someone who lives in the past.

in pagans credit, his coaching record goes back well efore north, ad it was retty good i believe. i thought he had won premierships coaching at both reserves and under 19 levels?

I would go for Sheedy. He would attract sponsors and membership. And he is a visionary coach.

I have no doubt he would succeed. We have a number of talented young players and our current ladder position should ensure we top up with more and delist a few oldies.

We really couldn't go wrong with either of them. I'd prefer Sheeds but I'd be happy with Pagan. All this rubbish about his record at Carlton - in four and a half seasons he's had 4 presidents (Elliott, Collins, Smorgon and Pratt) and what is quite possibly the worst list in AFL history (and I include Fitzroy of 1995/96 in that). No first round draft picks for his first 2 years and a coaching panel and board who have spent most of their time undermining him. Add to that "quality" on field leadership like Fevola and Whitnall and I really think it's a miracle he managed a winning ratio of 25%. Carlton are rabble - they are in shocking shape and whoever takes them on next year better hope for at least a five year contract. It is unfathomable that we managed to lose to this outfit twice last year.

I'd prefer to look at his brilliant under age record; his super work at North in the 1990's (seven successive preliminary finals in the era of football socialism is a record that will probably never be matched) and his amazing ability to hold the Roos together after the Carey-Stevens issue.

If Essendon sack Sheedy they are absolute idiots, but I'd be more than happy to capitalise on their mistake!

He was successful earlier in his career, won premierships but then the game just passed him by and he was absolutely hopeless at the death. That's where I see Pagan now, if he came to Melbourne, it would be a disgrace. Sheedy is a more enticing prospect to me, but I hope we go for someone younger and pray to God its not somone like Brian Royal or Chris Bond, have either of them been within cooo-eee of an AFL premiership as either player or assistant coach? Then again Paul Roos never got a sniff of a flag either until he took over as senior coach so i guess the knife cuts both ways. Whichever way we go with the coach its going to be a case of damned if we do and damned if we don't (in the short term at least as all and sundry supporters seem to have their favourites and their despised candidates) only time will tell if we make the right choice.

Isn't it just typical though of our club that when we find ourselves in a unique situation (ie. the only club in the AFL to be without a senior coach and actively looking for a new one) within 3 weeks we're back behind the eightball and all the advantage of Daniher leaving when he did has now vanished. Like others have said, I think we might end up with 3rd best choice and I've got a horrible feeling its going to be Connolly.

I seriously doubt Sheedy is willing to go through the gruelling 5 week process designed by the MFC to assess the best available coach.

So as much as I understand some poster's wishful thinking regarding Sheeds, if he hasn't applied, I doubt he'll be getting a look in.

I heard someone mention Ken Hinkley on SEN this morning.

Its amazing how many candidates there are, but as with appointing people to any role there is a fair bit of luck involved. Fingers crossed the process in place allows Harris and Gardiner to identify the most important information on a person required to assess their coaching ability.

So we are third draft pick for coach too then.... We will be sweating on whomever we choose to come good - everyone has their own opinion as to whom it should be based on their paradigm. For me I would not like to see any recycled coach ala Sheedy, Pagan or Connoly. Hope thye move soon though. Even if its not announced until the end of season.

On Footy Classified last night it was mentioned that Voss maybe forming a ticket with Wayne Brittain (sp?)

My biggest fear in getting someone like Voss is the inexperience however with Brittain in a mentoring role this is less of a concern.

We should call Sheedy tonight and say mate, there is a job awaiting you if you want it.

Sheedy would not have to go through and sort of process, the reason ND was going to be made was they wanted him gone but didn't have the balls to tell him so embarrassed him and the club by asking him to re apply for the job.

I think Ratten wont coach Carlton next year, even if he wins a few games.

I believe Melbourne can definitely grab the pick of the bunch this year. It's quite clear that the Carlton job is a far softer option for a prospective coach to take, and any coach willing to take the soft option is not worth taking in my opinion. Carlton won't be expected to win 10 games in any season for the next 3 years, any new coach has time to learn the caper while developing a list without the pressure for immediate results. They will also have th backing of a billionnaire and a huge supporter base, and be safe in the knowledge that however much they stink, they can't have the side performing any worse than it has for the last 6 years.

The coach who seeks out the Melbourne job will be expected to make finals in his first year. They'll have to promote the club vigorously, and deal with substandard facilities at first if this redevelopment takes any longer. There will be a fair bit of extra pressure on top of an already stressful job.

Fremantle is an ugly destination. A playing group with woeful off-field behaviour, and a city with too much money and not enough to do.

I think the quality of person and coach Melbourne will attract will be very high.

As a side note, if Brett Ratten is not highly regarded enough at Carlton that they would look at an untried Michael Voss and others ahead of him for next year, then why should we look at him?

Its a good point pants.

The other thought is that Ratten has got alot of mysterious currency amongst supporters on this site for only 1 year of midield coaching where he apparently had the "X" factor of influence.

This currency has not been diminished by the fact that he has been midfield coach at Carlton for the past two years and frankly they have been absolute tish.

I aint counting Ratten out...but I cannot work out any reasoned or knowledge basis as to why he would be a good coaching option other than he has put his hand up for the job.
