Vale Dennis Cometti

He was loved by many and absolute legend in Australian media. Some of the best one liners too.

2021 Triple M call featuring Dennis gets a run every few months. Magnificent.

In an era of broadcasting giants, he stood the tallest. It was a great time for sports commentary, but he was the Richie Benaud of the AFL (VFL, WAFL).

He was the best.

My childhood is narrated by Cometti. And Rex Hunt before he was problematic.

“(Name) with delusions of adequacy” after a simple Clanger is a go to in my head movies at the footy.

Everyone goes on about Dennis's puns, but they were just garnish. He was a fantastic caller, and would have been just as fantastic without the puns.

Plus, he loved the Demons.

Hats off.

Yes, Hats off to the Master. Such a smooth broadcaster. Loved his voice and of course his clever quips. After the GF, I listened to Dennis and his final radio broadcast. It was supreme. Farewell Dennis and thank you for painting images with your wonderfully descriptive words. We will miss you. RIP.

Does anyone have the MMM WA call of the 21 GF. I think that was his last?

I got it off youtube where there were multiple commentary versions of the video to the 2021 GF.

They are special as each gives you a different look at that Golden hour.

The commentary by Dennis and his friends was extra special.

Also available in the Triple M Footy podcast

Nobody had a better sense of when to be funny (and had the skill to pull it off, unlike some of the buffoons doing commentary now) and when to be serious. He'd have been great on a show like AFL360.

We'll remember him for his one-liners, but the real skill came in the way he worked them in, without it sounding forced or insincere. For sure there were some he had planned or kept in his back pocket, but he knew when to hold them and when to go all in, and when to let the game speak for itself. The just spoke the language of the game so well.

Is it on the DVD as an option?
