POSTGAME: Practice Match vs North Melbourne

Any stats?

There’s some speed in this team now - Pickett (x 2), Windsor (off day today), Sharp (could be a find), the young kids coming through give some optimism.

I think we need to keep Langford in the middle

Need to see more from JVR, Jeffo, Windsor next week

Best game I've seen Howes play

Have to disagree with you ado. I thought JVR was pretty good today - showed great athleticism and leading patterns I thought. Very different looking player than last year. But do agree re Windsor and Jeffo - but need to rethink their commitment to get the ball. However, Kentfield impressed me. He looks a mile ahead of Jeffo.

How did Dovaston go for North?

I only ask because he was thrown up as option instead of Pickett.

LP 2 years older (and faster) and it showed

The highlight for, me was the speed at which we seem to have adapted to the new game plan. Couldn’t be happier!

The roos have been down for a long time and based on today it looks like another season in the bottom 3-4. I feel for them getting done by 10 goals by a side that only finished 6 points ahead of them last year. I have a couple of long time friends who are North susporters.

Sharp DM! It must have been very easy today.

Great effort from the boys, scratchy at times but understandable

You could see the new brand King is trying to bring in and it leads to exciting attacking footy!!

Pickett looked like he was going at 70% and was BOG by a mile. Best player in the league.

Howes, Steele, Kentfield, JVR all played well. I reckon Sharp played well too, I had given up on him but with his running power, the new game style might give him opportunities if he can realise his limitations.

Mihocek is a broad, big unit and will have a big impact on us this year.

If the AFL had relegation North Melbourne would now be in the WFNL 2nd Division. Their best player is a recycled dwarf.

Next week should see a bit better of a tightened game plan, still too many skills errors by hand and foot, but then again that's a work in progress. My only concern is they will get caught out on the switch of play by better clubs, but it was good to see better movement of the ball. It was interesting watching Moose in the ruck; gee, there are some really good signs there. He will get better as the year goes on.

In Fairness North were missing:

Corr, Wardlaw, McKercher, McDonald, Spargo, Urquhart, Fisher, Dawson, Goad, Thredgold, Curtis, Mikuda, Goater, George, Jackson, Whitlock, Stevens, Banch, Trembath

They will be a much tougher proposition in the season proper

There were a lot of positives with the way JVR presented and is hitting up at the ball. He’s always going to be a bit 2 grabby and drop a few but he looks ready to do the hard work across half forward. You can’t play this style of footy without guys busting their backsides at half forward.

Not Jeffo’s best day but I think his role changed after Mihocek went down early. I still think the way he gets back on to the footy after contests and can use the ball as a link player are attributes we just need to get games into. Promisingly today at least he wasn’t outmarked too often.

Can we play all 4 tall forwards or do we go 3 and give Luker the nod for the ruck work? Not sure we’ll have a clear answer for a few rounds at least.

My brother follows North, I screenshot the score and sent it to him. He replied some 20 minutes later saying “and your point is….”

Man, Norf were junk. They have about 6 good players, of which only 3 ever show up at any one time. Yes, missing some of their starting 23 but its not like those guys are much chop either. Any half decent team would have beaten them by 12 goals today. Which we may well be.

Our midfield is well suited to our new game plan and to the trend of 2026 football. We have too much seasoned talent to be bottom 4 imho.

Kentfield is a gem. Great athleticism, 2nd efforts and lays a heavy tackle. Hope he plays round 1.

How ridiculous are the 2 min simulation scenarios?

Practice that stuff at training.

People are trying to watch a match and sure it doesn't really matter who wins, but it's still a game of footy

Kentfield will end up better than JVR and Jefferson, not really saying that much but I’m glad we’ve got him

Even when complimenting a player you can still sound negative

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
