I watched the second half on replay and Jefferson was responsible for ensuring the ball came to ground in 3-4 contents where there was several North defenders. He hit the contest hard and two of those resulted in shots at goal. He also laid some good tackles, and made some long, continued chases as North defenders ran the ball out of our forward half. He looked to be playing with more intensity. It wasn't consistent across the game, but for those complaining that he isn't hard enough at the content, I saw steps in the right direction from him in that regard.

Some of Jeffos supporters are really clutching at straws 😂😂

First he was unduly impacted because Mihocek went off so he got their best defender & now we should be excited because he contested the ball ??

I wish him all the best & hope he succeeds but nothing to see so far.

Should not even be in contention for Rd 1-5. He lacks competative hunger for the contest. Has shown little in matches to suggest otherwise. Training at a high level VS competing in games are very different. It was an underwhelming performance from Jeffo and Kentfield should plenty more

Kentfield's game was very strong on the weekend, and being able to pinch hit in the ruck, I'd say that if he has another strong game against Richmond this week, he'd be in front of Jefferson for Round 1.

On Bailey, he has always been able to execute a few nice passes. That seems to be his major strength. If he is to stay on the list he needs to develop a few more strings to the bow... the way Nibbler did. He needs high level endurance, and I think he is near that mark. He needs to be a tackle machine... showing some signs, and he needs to kick goals... average 1.5 a game. I hope he can show those skills at senior level. Its now or never!

From what I've seen of alot of his performances at senior level, it more that too often he panics, fumbles the ball and holds back going for it. Somehow needs to get that out of his game.

Very little to get enthused about.

So far a cross between Lucas Cook & Michael Newton.

Speaking of the former, LC walked into my local club last week looking for a game. Last I saw him was playing in the VFL pre-match to the 186 debacle. His main opponent that day was Fev. (his teammate!).

Somewhat agree, with the excuse of his game suffering as a result of Mihocek going out of the game. Key forwards have got to have that killer mentally that 'Their the man' and go for the oppertunites that present them selves.

I'd also go against the notion that key forwards have to take years to develop. Having watched alot of Brisbane games the past few years and Logan Morris, being a guy that's actually a year younger and 4cm or so shorter than Jefferson, Morris has performed consistently at AFL level over the time that Jeffo's been running around at Casey. Morris is not hugely physical as a player, but leads well and positions himself well and uses good judgement, holds his ground to take solid marks in front of goal and then kicks for goal well to consistently finish off his work.

I do think it's way too early to be writing off Jeffo though off the back of one practice match performance. I actually see alot of the qualities that Logan Morris has in Jeffo and with our better/faster ball movement into the forward line under King, I think there is still plenty of scope for Jeffo to stand up and produce. That said, I also think that Kenterfield and JVR are well ahead at this point in time, but I think there is still plenty of opportunity for that to change over the lead-up and first part of the season. Didn't think JVR's performance was particularly strong. Competition between our emerging key forwards is a good thing and I think they all have good potential, which is a positive going forward.

Give me Kentfield any day.

He actually looks as if he enjoys the physical stuff unlike Jefferson

The boy is a beast. Plays like he is 26-27 years old.

He is going to bully a few defenders over the journey.

Totally agree, we all want Jeffo to succeed but at this stage Kentfield's in front.

He loves a tackle Batman.

Can't be carrying more than 3-4 talls in our forward line.

Mihocek, JVR, Kentfield and then depending on the other teams talls, do we include Moose which might tip the scales or another small as a bench rotation?

Or he could be like Bailey Laurie, who turns 24 in a few weeks and has been on the list all this time, while showing realitively little as a small running type at senior level. I did actually notice him execute a few nice passes on the game against North, so you never know, maybe he'll break through at senior level yet.

I'd think that Jeffo would get at least a 1 year extension as a tall if he continues to improve, but fails to have an out and out break-out season. Be interesting to see how he and JVR work in with Mihocek later in the season, although at some point they both need to step-up and take the load of being the key forwards on their shoulders alone.

Laurie still being on the list is one of life's great mysteries.

I find Jeffo is the type of player that waits for the game to come to him, rather than taking the game on.

I wish he’d want to rip his opponents head off, seems too nice a bloke to do that.

We are crying out for a great forward, needs to take his chances otherwise he’ll be playing VFL or suburban footy next year.

In 2024 we could see glimpses at Casey of a competency which suggested that 2025 was a probable break out year at AFL level. Many of us thought he should have been played at AFL level for the last four or five games of the 2024 season.

Unfortunately he went backwards in 2025 even at Casey level. One of the reasons was that Casey had way too many tall forwards as we sought the elusive back up to Gawn.

I'll be interested to see what 2026 brings as it's definitely a make or break year for him

Perhaps he had dirt on someone or something?

Agree that he seems to have been given more of a chance to prove he is of AFL standard than many that have gone before him.

you'd swear he was playing a decoy role, or we just ignore him. He does the old 'gets to where the ball aint'. I just dont see him making it. Sure last week he showed a bit on the lead and a great pack mark but put a decent opponent on him and he has zero impact.

Hes no good imo. theres enough of a sample size from him to show he really doesnt have it for AFL level. no mongrel at all, looks and plays like Jane imo.

Id love him to prove me wrong but it wont happen, wont get offered another contract imo.

I looked hard at our game against North just gone, and o e of the things that struck me was our pace and height on the forward line.

One would have thought that we we would be slower. But that did not look to be the case. Dare I say no Max? This week will show us more, and how the FL functions as well again or not. That would explain also why we went in with the full compliment as well.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
