I Hope the AFL Watched the Superbowl Halftime Show…

Featured Replies

Hope the NFL watched the AFL premiership cup presentation, the NFL focuses on the owner, coach & MVP, boring, the players should be lifting the trophy, AFL atmosphere & honouring the players as fans admire the players!

I really couldn’t care less to be honest, although I’m not sure how you came to that conclusion. But while we’re going there, how did you feel about the Grand Old Flag being sung in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, at the 2019 AFL Indigenous Round?

Post the words in Woiwurrung language so we can all sing along next time

that's cos the players are just the cotton pickers on the owner's plantation fields

The NFL, like the AFL when they chose Snoop Dog, simply want controversy as it attracts more eyeballs. Bad Bunny hates America and has a history of burning the US flag. So the choice suited them perfectly

While most people wouldn't have understood the entirely-in-Spanish lyrics it would get me banned here if I was to print them here as they are disgusting.

Feel free to look them up.

Family entertainment ? To paaphrase John Elliott 'Pig's derriere'

Total load of rot junior- the lot of it. In fact rot doesn't come close.

It's one thing not liking an artist, it's something completely different to make up a pack of lies about them.

And to be honest, i'm shocked. I'm hoping you somehow got your wires crossed, because your post is straight up disinformation, not to mention defamatory.

Bad Bunny has a history of burning the American flag? That's simply not true. I don't recall him burning the American flag once, let alone having a 'history' of doing so.

Bad Bunny hates America? You have to be joking.

One that's absolute rubbish, two did you watch his performance?

It was a total celebration of America for god's sake - he could hardly have been more patriotic.

During "Café Con Ron," near the end of his performance, he spoke his first and only English words of the entire show: "God bless America."

He closed his performance by showing the camera the words the words written on the gridiron ball he carried for most of his performance - "Together We Are America”

And what on earth are you talking about that his lyrics were 'disgusting' and that you would get banned if you were to post them?

A serious question - how did you come to that conclusion?

I'm guessing you are referring to his song Safaera, the recorded version of which has sexual, though certainly not 'disgusting', lyrics.

In any case the version he sung at the superbowl had different lyrics, with all explicit lyrics removed or muted to ensure it complied with the very strict American Federal Communications Commission standards and NFL broadcast rules.

These were the other songs he sang:

  • "El Apagón" (The Blackout) - about Puerto Rico's power crisis and government corruption

"I don't want to leave here / Let them leave.

Puerto Rico is incredible / From the tip of the island to Ponce.

Now everyone wants to be Latino / But they lack the seasoning.

Damn blackout / Power goes out every day.

They are staying with what belongs to us / But the street is ours."

  • "NUEVAYOL" - about the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York

"From the sun of the island to the cold of the Bronx / Looking for the dollar that doesn't buy happiness.

The 'guagua' (bus) takes a long time / The A-train is full of dreams and fatigue.

I remember the neighborhood while walking through Times Square / Everything is bright but it feels dark.

Puerto Rico is in the heart / Even if the physical body is in 'Nuevayol'."

  • "DtMF" (Debí Tirar Más Fotos) - about cherishing moments before they're gone

"The phone stayed in the pocket / While life passed us by.

Now I look at the gallery and there is nothing / Only the echo of your laughter in my mind.

Time is a thief that doesn't return what it takes / I should have taken more photos.

To see your face when the sun hit you / To remember that we were happy for a second."

  • "BAILE INOLVIDABLE" (Unforgettable Dance) - about lost love

"That dance was the beginning of the end / Between the smoke and the reggaeton.

You moved like you knew / That tomorrow you would be a memory.

The club is full but it feels empty / Seeking your silhouette in every corner.

An unforgettable dance / A scar that doesn't want to heal."

  • "Café Con Ron" - the closing celebration

"The sun is rising and the party hasn't ended / Bitter coffee and sweet rum.

To forget the sorrows / To celebrate that we are still standing.

If the world ends tomorrow / Let it find us dancing.

From the mountain to the coast / This is the island that never sleeps."

bad bunny is one of the most jingoistic america-first artists making music today; he just happens to be singing about his experiences in spanish as he was born and raised in puerto rico... which is part of america

he has NEVER burned a flag - just patently false

Fair comment

I note you reference to an older generation of musicians. They expressed their politics through their music. Which I’m fine with. And I get the sense they meant what they sang about. I don’t get that sense from modern musicians. I’ve picked on bono because he can’t walk past a microphone without pontificating, yet he has some very questionable tax structures in place.

i guess its the hypocrisy that gets on my nerves

Yeah, I know what you mean…there is a lot of grandstanding, which I’m not keen on, but really, I don’t mind the politicking of Springsteen, the Dropkick Murphys, early Midnight Oil, and a number of others as they have pretty much been political animals from the get go.

I think that current events around the world have ‘enticed’ politically minded musicians out of the shadows… to me that’s understandable, but I don’t expect others to agree with what I think.

No i wasn't. This has nothing to do with any previous AFL performance

And yes i am being serious. I could ask you the same question in how you came to conclusion that was actually a great half time performance.

It was horrid.

Looks like i wasn't the only one who thought so too.

I would seriously question the word "thinking" in regard to anything that comes out of X

Bad Bunny has been around a lot longer than most people realise.

I first became aware of him way back in 2001 when he appeared in the movie 'Donnie Darko'.

A hypothetical scenario and a serious question.

The AFL spends $100 million on Taylor Swift to play the 2026 Grand Final. She puts in a simply amazing performance - guest stars, dancers, fireworks, puppies; maybe she base jumps off one of the light towers in a wedding dress and gets married to Travis Kelce in the goal square. It is all the world talks about for a week, before something else happens and everyone moves on.

What does it actually mean for the AFL, and how do the game, the clubs, the fans, the players at lower levels actually benefit from this long term?

I find it hard to believe that this actually generates new fans. For one thing, the next game is not for 6 months and, outside the southern states of Australia, nobody thinks about football in that time. Most of the people watching Taylor Swift probably don't watch a single second of the game.

Does one big spectacle actually generate additional sponsorship or membership dollars, does it add to the TV rights? Does it actually generate anything outside social media likes and video views? How does the NFL benefit long term from their half time shows? How would the AFL benefit from a similar extravaganza.

Reductive post.

First of all, I didn't say no-one understood a word of it. You're deliberately misquoting me. There are 60 million Spanish speakers in the US, not to mention the millions of Spanish speakers around the world who would have watched.

As for the "message", communication is much, much more than just words. Everybody knows full well what he was saying and what this was about, which is why there's a backlash from the usual suspects.

Why do these people have this need to understand the language? The body language, stage/set and delivery gave most people paying attention a feel for what was going on.

The usual suspects, including the man in the white house are more than happy to pay through the nose to see a 3 Tenors concert but no, we need good old fashioned Americana and apple pie baby!

Spot on Bing.

Great show, great final message (The Only Thing more powerful than hate is love). In a country where so many are determined to divide, it gave a brief respite. Unfortunately, the commitment to divide and conquer is strong. The news cycle will move on and the ongoing work to dismantle democracy will continue.

Great to see the facts presented by Binman and wwsw.

I always enjoy the contribution BM makes and again am overwhelmed by the depth and perception of his comments. Thanks. Also include HT as his contribution on music is also always worthwhile.

I attend WOMAD every year and the world class artists sprinkled with Australian acts is always fantastic. Some of the best acts have been obscure and often the performances are inother languages. Its about the music and the performance.

And yes the Half time entertainment isabout marketing so the more controversy generated the better. Wether the viewer at homes actually watches it is just another one of the mythical mysteries of marketing. Personally im turning the sausages.

Just wait until people learn that Sigur Ros sing in a combination of Icelandic and and a self-invented, non-linguistic language called Hopelandic that nobody anywhere in the world can hope to understand. Of course, this doesn't mean that their music is not worth listening to. Amirite, @Ghostwriter ?

I think you missed the gag HT (Bad Bunny was 6 in 2001).

Just listened to 30 mins of BB on spotify to see what the fuss was about.

Was not impressed.

Loved Kendrick last year but not sure about this guys talent level. Fun beat to dance to though.

Happy for him to perform the SB though. he is crazy popular and it annoys republicans so all the better!

My two cents. I, being Hispanic, can tell you Bad Bunny is not a singer has no vocal talent. Give me Tupac any day.

And yes, the lyrics are disgusting and best case misogynistic.

PS. I want to apologise on behalf of LATAM for bringing Reggaeton to the world.
