THANKS P.F

PF we couldn’t believe our luck. Most enjoyable day out at Casey training probably ever to be fair. Today’s session was a highlights real & that video put out by the club was just a little teaser. The didn’t show all the best bits.

Can’t count Sean Wight, as he was also Scottish

Have there been Irish players on our list after Stynes retired in 1998?!!! (The rest of this conversation is irrelevant.)

Umm, someone said they thought we've had no Irish stars SINCE Stynes. How is someone who retired before Stynes someone "SINCE"?!!!! When I'm trying to provide facts I check them. Wikipedia had Wight playing from 1985 to 1995 and Jim Stynes playing in the seniors from 1987 to 1998. What have I said that was wrong? BTW I just double checked - AFL tables has Sean wight playing from round eight 1985 to that final game in 1995 where Sean Smith took that amazing mark up in Brisbane. Stynes debut in round three 1987 and played to the prelim final in 1998. Sorry but I've just missed your point completely here. I just know I can't say that Sean wight played since Stynes.

I think you’ll find “started an}d finished before” has been interpreted as Wight finishing before Stynes played, hence the confusion. I met them both, played golf with Sean, just so talented at golf as well.

Terrible end for both.

This. The post was ambiguous and I didn't understand the intent.

Top performers from match sim:

  1. Kozzy - everything he did was brilliant, besides one missed target going in 50. But even the play leading to that was brilliant lol

  2. Roo - it’s no wonder he’s moving well, he’s super fit. & now he’s hardened. Worked really hard today & got better as the game went on. Got high up the ground many times too. & he was rewarded.

  3. Jeffo - was BOG at qtr time. Very crafty & high IQ type guy. Just gotta do start doing it for longer now.

  4. Rivers - he was probably my best or most consistent midfielder today. Just looks to be playing with such clear direction now. He’s leadership is growing. He’ll have a good year Riv.

  5. Langford - just love the way he plays footy & I love that he kicks goals & fantastic goals too. Strikes me as one of those blokes that loves the grind of it. Got better & better as the game went on.

  6. Culley - so strong. Loves breaking a tackle & has no issue breaking them. Was able to get his hands free & give off to runners many times today.

  7. Caleb - cutting lines & angles & with that dash like from season one. Kicked the ball well today. Wasn’t afraid to take the risky ones too.

  8. Salem - him too, just looks fit & confident again. This would have to have been his best pre season for sometime now wouldn’t it? Really hope his body holds up & allows him to go back to attacking the play like he use to.

Now to clean up the in decision making like giving off the ball to someone in a worse position.

I actually looked pretty similar when I was a younger dude, recklessly handsome and the girls used to cry themselves to sleep thinking what a good catch fence was,... ah those were the days 😁🤩😎

All good! I meant that he started before Jim's stretch started and finished before Jim's stretch ended.

It still has to actually turn into gameday performance. But if most of these players play well during the Home and away season suddenly we're not the rabble from the end of last year. What's amazing is this list doesn't include latrelle, nor AMW and maybe some others too. It's probably too much to expect a dozen players to play out of their skin. But certainly if mid-year we're well in the mix to make the proper eight improvement in players such as I referred to would probably explain it.

Along with the previous training reports, your post reinforces that Windsor, Kozzie, Culley and Salem would be in the top 5 pre season performers at the club in terms of match sim and availability. And if you had to choose a player to have an outstanding pre season, Windsor would be high on that list, touch wood.

Hopefully JVR has a big February on the track after a solid hit out yesterday. After a 4 goal performance against North in the first practice of last year, he got injured in the opening minute of the Freo praccy game which ruined any momentum going into round 1. He never got going last year.

Melbourne rookie listed Nicholas Walsh in 2000 and Kevin Devine in 2001 but neither played a senior game.

According to Demonwiki which is an excellent resource for all things Melbourne and run by @Supermercado:-

Nicholas Walsh (#12)

“Irish recruit who captained his country's Under 17 international rules team against Australia, and was sponsored by the Demons to complete his studies at St. Kevin's College. In his first year there he won the school Best and Fairest and was drafted by the Demons soon after.

“He played two senior games for Sandringham over two seasons, but suffered a wretched run with injury before being delisted”.

The reference to Sandringham is to the VFL Zebras who were Melbourne’s affiliate team at the time.

Kevin Devine (#48)

“The lightly framed Dubliner was recruited during the AFL's second wave of Irish imports. He almost ended up at the Western Bulldogs, but with the two clubs unable to decide between Devine and fellow Irishman Bernie Collins they tossed a coin and the Demons ended up with the younger Devine. Neither played an AFL game.

“On arriving at Melbourne, Devine was put on a fitness program to improve his strength, adding five kilograms in his first months at the club. Despite being groomed as a future half-back flanker, winger or half-forward flanker her never made it past the Sandringham seconds, where he played 14 games, and returned to Ireland at the end of the 2001 season”.

In the same year in which Devine was recruited, the Sydney Swans drafted Tadgh Kenneally who played 197 games including the 2005 premiership.

I suppose that it would be fair to say that after our initial success with Jim Stynes and Sean Wight, our second wave of Irish recruiting was a monumental failure. If only our recruiters had some divine inspiration and found Tadgh instead!

No you didn't, I have heard that before.

While you are Jeffo's number one fan without doubt, I think I was just about his first, claiming he was showing good signs for an AFL career after his first few Casey games. A search of DL will confirm that.

Seriously though, this looks to be his big chance after his best pre season, to cement a permanent place in the side and hopefully he grabs it.

Agree! Needs to play consistently well now!
