Behind the scenes on draft night

So if Essendon would have taken Robey and Sharp rather than risk someone doing a deal with us to take Sharp, would we have taken Taylor and Farrow?

The opposite, my interpretation was if Farrow, XT and Pickett were on the board, we still wouldn't have selected Farrow

Great content except they missed night 2 of the national draft...

Does JT not literally say if Essendon take Sharp, we'll pick Taylor and Pickett? Or am I going crazy?

Nope, our order of the 5 players left in our tier of players (perhaps our second tier behind the Eagles guys and perhaps Cumming) was:

Robey (unsure where but likely first), Taylor, Pickett, Nairn, Farrow.

And as explained by Twomey had Essendon gone Taylor we wouldโ€™ve picked Nairn at 11 just to get Pickett in the 12 slot.

Top 3 insights:

Taylor: best on ground with the wrong boots! Plus confidence that heโ€™ll mature into a leader and finals type player.

Pickett: Love the line from Lamby that if his name was Latrelle Richardson theyโ€™d still pick him. The belief in his talent being obvious even in 2023. And the confidence that he can play wing or even on ball.

Matthews: exciting to hear about how good they think he is athletically and how he complements our other small forwards.

clearly they were beyond thrilled that xavier 'nephew' taylor fell through to our selection while latrelle pickett was always going to be selected by us

the wraps on matthews are strong; exciting to hear

I've been waiting for this video and feared it wouldnt be produced this year. Fantastic insights into the process. I enjoyed the banter between the team.

That was my takeaway too. Itโ€™s highlights and edited, but Kings looked so poker faced until he was talking about Pickett

Everyone should do themselves a favour,

Watch the video on the MFC website

Fantastic insight into what they thought .

No doubt similar things were said about players and interviews if blokes we did not get butโ€ฆโ€ฆ

We should all thank JT and TL. And all the other staff About the work they did. Following Latrelle for 30 months Insane to actually get him

Can someone load the video. Great watch

It's edited so they are hardly likely to say publicly damn our preferred pick was taken so got our next pick who's not as good.

Enjoy it for what it is. We have drafted 4 very good/exciting candidates with high ceilings

I think it's pretty obvious from how it was edited that there was at least 1 prospect they discussed before Taylor. From all of the whispers/rumours, it seems that was probably Robey. Hard to tell if there was another.

But they seemed genuinely glad that Taylor got through. And from the video, it does seem like Latrelle was always coming at pick 12

Who misses out?

JT mentioned in describing Taylor before the draft that he's not the centre forward player they are also searching for, that midfielder that can go forward, but he turns defence into offence. So obviously best available at the pick not needs based.

Edited by Its Time Again

Then perhaps we should have had a flier on him with a late pick in the 2024 national draft or rookie draft, rather than using pick 12 in 2025.

I found the way they interviewed the players rather comical rather than getting to know the player.

During the draft they were not very business like, I think ex-footballers don't realise football has become a serious business were a clubs future is dependent on team performance.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
