Demon Jacks

Featured Replies

My memory is poor and I have only managed to come with just 6 Melbourne players with first name of Jack.

No particular order mine are;

Jack Steele

Jack Billings

Jack Trengove

Jack Watts

Jack Viney

Jack Mueller (In my view the greatest of the Jacks.)

Can my fellow posters help swell this list?

Reminds me of this one match I was watching where St Kilda had six players named Jack on the field at the same time. A third of their team named Jack. And you’d have no excuse for not knowing this since BT mentioned EVERY FIVE [censored] MINUTES.

Hendo

Brilliant Google AI could only come up with 4:

At least four players named Jack have played for the Melbourne Football Club: Jack Viney, Jack Trengove, Jack Billings, and Jack Sinclair. Jack Viney is a current player, while Jack Trengove is a former captain. Jack Billings joined Melbourne in 2024, and Jack Sinclair played for the Melbourne Football Club for a short period after moving from St Kilda, although he is not currently on the list??

The best guide to find Melbourne players is the MFC Heritage numbers list. After my memory effort, I cheated and consulted this list and discovered a grand total of 53 Demon Jacks. Before the 1950s there were over 40. Popular name then! From my time following the Dees, I did forget Jack Grimes, Jack Henderson and going back to the 50s Jack Thomson. So 6 out of 9 is a bare pass! So Google list was pretty sparse wasn't it? Thanks Rod.

And wasn't this guy one of the Jacks taken in our little-known original Irish experiment?...

Judicious addition of an 'r' may help.

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
