Thereโ€™s plenty of quality in his field kicking too.

yes his kicking in general play seems more polished than his goal kicking routine.

Heโ€™s also a pretty good one grab mark going by the highlights.

Emma Quayle. She started working for an AFL club.

I don't get concerned about ''paying overs'', but I'm aware they get picks wrong.

I'm not sure I explained myself properly.

...and I'm not thinking you were but some seem to think using say pick 8 on a player the phantoms have as say pick 20 or whatever is a stretch.

When I would think the professionals should know all the players in the draft and have their own rankings.

If we think he's worth 8 then take him at that.

You don't miss a good player because he didn't rank that high in the phantoms.

Jackson was a prime point, even a lot of the pros thought we over reached there...but I think the proof was in the premiership with that one.

Holmes at 20 was probably the pick of that draft or close to it.

We would have no problem using pick 7 or 8 on him now.

If we want him we may well have to cough up to get him. We're not picking him because of what he is, but because of what he could become.

In JT's hands.

Cameron Nairn is a quality young player. 188cms. Yes heโ€™s like Ollie Dempsey or a little like Jai Culley, or throw in a little Bailey Fritsch (but not as smoothe). Medium forward? Actually he plays more wing/half forward, or can shift to half back. Heโ€™s a smart player too. Left footer. Not highly skilled but good enough. His big assets are his running power and his marking. Kicking is not elite but satisfactory to be honest. I had him pegged in about pick 30 so itโ€™ll be a big move to have him at our โ€œ11/12โ€. Again itโ€™s all in JTs capable hands.

is there enough of a difference between nairn and leray to justify one at pick 12 over the other at 34?

to me, no. leray is the same size, good overhead and a nice kick

but maybe it was nairns two week block at the back end in the guts that is what we really liked, so they could u go cumming and nairn? probably not when u already have tholstrup idk much to weigh up

Let's get Emma Quayle's thoughts on Nairns ball drop

isn't she the gws recruiter who used to work in the media?

King wants someone who will kick goals - not just another midfielder that "bombs it in" or even kicks it in well. Who beyond Pick 11/12 fits that cateogory? Nairn it will be.

I think it's quite funny how people here are concerned we might pay overs for someone we know little about based on "draft experts" opinions.

I will trust our recruiting team ahead of these lot any day of the week.

Of course. Most posters here have a lot of faith in JT and we are always just waiting to see what he will do knowing its the job he is paid to do.

You have to remember that the draft period used to be the greatest day of the year for a lot of Demon fans as we had very little to cheer about for a decade. We are conditioned to scouring the draft boards and picking our favorites. We enjoy casting judgement on 3min videos of one or two games. Its all meaningless fun.

All our conversations wont change anything and in JT was trust.

Emma Quayle I think yeah

Yeah, nah. His ball drop is fine.

I think Nairn's kicking is pretty ordinary, both set shots and field kicking. Looks a bit like Marty Hore's action, only not as good. If he's a bottom ager, there still significant development he can do on an AFL list in that area. His strengths are that he gets the ball a bit in the right spots, he's a good mark for his size, is clever around the contest and can kick a goal or two. To me theres a bit of a project player about him, but is that worth pick 7 or 8?

And I dont think we've mentioned Emma Quayle at GWS enough of late ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I reckon itโ€™s like Miers from Geelong, youโ€™re never going to โ€˜fixโ€™ that type of kicking action as itโ€™s so natural to him, much like the buddy arc and the Josh Kennedy stutter. You work with what youโ€™ve got.

But I wouldnโ€™t be using a first round pick in him, even in this draft,

I disagree, if we wanted pure goal kickers it would probably be Pickett and/or Dovaston and Ludowyke.

Nairn's value is the way he can improve our ball movement by hard running, smart leading and link up play as a half forward and wing. Especially as a guy who kicks it inside 50 well.

Would like to see some of Nairns footage from his higher disposal midfield games

First Iโ€™ve hear of Nairn anywhere near the top 20. He looks good but I think there are better options in the top 10

He would have always been there and thereabouts on the fringes of rankings by Twomey, Chellapah, etc. This is a draft where it's been frequently said that you could throw a blanket from pick 10 - 40.

The gaps aren't that large, recruiters will earn their money because some will have to stick their necks out for certain players.

For clarity I know we all love JT and know how good he is at spotting a bolter but Nairn is not in the Windsor/Tholstrup camp.

Comparatively in October 2023 Windsor was ranked 11th and Tholstrup 16th. We ended up taking Caleb with pick 7 and Kolt with 13. Nairn is currently ranked 29th, and if we were to take him with one of our picks thatโ€™d be in the 11-12 range. Even Dogga was ranked 14th at the same stage.

I would feel a lot more comfortable if we picked Nairn up through trading back into the later end of the first round than reaching at 7/8 (11/12). Weโ€™ve just lost two of our stalwart midfielders.

Need to take all these rankings with a grain of salt, they are just passion projects by amateurs or pure guess work to generate clicks by media outlets

Anyone in that range you really like the look of?

Who above that do you particularly like?

I think that was his 2nd last one of that year. This was the final one. Pickett at 30 but linked to Dees first pick. Similar vibes to this year maybe?

So Cal changed his ranking on Kozzie (from nowhere to 30) late in the piece because he got wind JT was keen on him. Says it all really.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
