Welcome to Demonland: Jack Steele

I'm overseas and out of the loop but with Flanders choosing Saints Jack is almost certainly gone.

Is there a knock on him, is his body cooked? Is he past his best?

We are in desperate need of culture change and leadership qualities and i would have thought this guy has it in spades.

We are bottom 6 for a few more years I reckon and need a no DH policy to turn this club around ... on and off the field.

Steven King has mentioned the game changing with an emphasis on outside ball movement and runners, so I doubt someone like Steele is in our calculations

With that being said, we may need him to field a team next year!

Yeah good point re ball movement.

But what price is setting standards around the club? We are years off contending again.

I love both Trac n Clarry but the thought of going through this mess again if one stays will do my head in and out rebound will only take longer.

Can't believe I'd ever say it but I want both gone otherwise it's rinse n repeat.

He might be a similar player to Clarry but he has nothing near the off field concerns. You still need an extractor, its a matter of what we are doing with viney

Anyone...but not Cox. It's the other ones who may soon wish they could get out who worry me. How is Pickett feeling? Langford and Lindsay must feel privileged to have been thrown into this cluster [censored].

I'd take Steele as a plan C where we very likely end up with neither of Flanders or Humphrey's and end up just drafting the best kids we can get.

Outside ball movement is fantastic - if you can win it in the first place.

Hahaha agreed to all that.

Viney, Pickett, Langford, Windsor, Lindsay, Culley.

Backs: Rivers, Bowey, Salem

Forwards: Chandler, Langdon, Sparrow, Henderson,

Depth: Tholstrup, Sharp, Laurie, ?Woey

Development: Mentha

One ready to go half back (so Rivers can play midfielder and Bowser/Salem can have some flexibility) and one ready to go midfielder would be wise I think. But ideally it’s younger guys with upside. I don’t think we’re Jack Steele desperate just yet.

Steele’s as good as 2025 Clarry & a solid citizen

If Oliver goes, we could get Steele for a 4th rounder for depth & help with culture

Would still prefer Clarry to stay and change obviously but will that ever happen?

He’s tough, a leader, has experience and a good character. Nothing wrong with that.

AND the Saints will almost certainly pay a big chunk of his wages. it'd be nice to get some benefit from their spending spree.

Would have thrived at Casey

as mentioned in the thread already, steele would be welcome as a last resort for some maturity/inside mid-ness coming in, with us losing mature bodies of trac and clarry, but only if its a deal we 'can't refuse' $ wise.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
