Thankfully he was under contract then!

Long term contracts aren’t always a bad thing.

As @Lucifers Hero says, Clarry netted us such an awful return for other reasons (off field stuff, and our mishandling which led to us having no negotiating leverage).

The benefit is having them contracted for next year. There is only liability thereafter.

I dont mind long term contracts. The only thing i would change is that if the player or player manager in anyway indicates to the club that he wants to leave while contracted, the salary component is null and void. We would still try to get a deal done for picks, but at least we dont ahve to worry about the salary aspect of it. This would also help naturally disincentivise players who look to sign up long term and then break contract when things start to turn sour. There is always the occasion that they may increase the salary which is fine but at least you are not hanging the club out to dry.

If on the other hand the club initiates the trade then the salary component remains.

i think its a simple change. It wont stop the leaking of a player is disgruntled to the media but it wont make it official either so the club can continue to come out and plead ignorance and play a straight bat saying its not entertaining any deals as the player is contracted and they havent heard anything.

I dont think this changes the Oliver situation at all but it would have given us a little more leverage in the Trac deal, where without his salary in the frame, we could have gotten a bit more for him on the open market.

Agree gs_1905 salary structuring seems way out of whack imagine in business your on a great salary and you want to move to one of your rival companies and expect your current contract to be maintained. As soon as you want to move your contact should be null and void, also they need to be structured better to protect the employee more, seems like we are being penalised for no fault of our own. Equal responsibility for both parties. AFL and clubs need to review the whole contract process with Players association.

Rival bidders are a bit of a myth in AFL trades. Once a player has made up their mind where they want to go you just have to deal with that club.

Of course. I meant earlier on, before Oliver decided.

I think the deal would have been similar. Cameron got 3 first round picks and we would have got similar.

It was 13, 15, 20 with two second rounders coming back. If we'd got similar we would have been worse off.

Also, Cameron was 27 at the time, with his best footy still to come. The reverse of Trac.

Came out of his exit meeting posting pictures of himself in a Casey jumper. Has sent a few congratulatory messages to Jamara..

He knows how to use social media.

Poor form

Of course he could have posted something. But if you think Trac posted his message, you haven't been watching.

I calculated the points (not sure if i was using the current system or the old one) as Petracca being worth around pick 2. I don't think it would have been THAT much different as long as we weren't dealing with the Eagles.

Toby Greene and his family got a rude shock last night when Clarry lobbed on his doorstep with a duffel bag and an attitude.

I have come to accept the lose of trac as it seems we have been well compensated and he didn't appear to want to play for us, but still digesting the Oliver departure. Can we have some facts? I feel the supporters need and honest explanation as to what led to the decision and why we get such a poor return in the "trade".

The club needs to take some key lessons from this. Long-term contracts are a millstone around the club's neck. With player movement so easy and player power being so strong, we need to be smarter about managing our list. Flexibility is key and this means being willing to let our stars go. If you have cap space, you can pick up players like Oliver, Steele, Ainsworth for next to nothing.

It worked for us in the Trac trade though. If he was out of contract we likely get far less and if a FA only one compensation pick.

Clarrie come out to thank the club, supporters and coaches yet?

Plenty of time to post [censored] memes apparently

Interesting

You don't expect a man-child with an attention span of 30 sec to do that, do you jnr?

Perhaps. But we would have been able to match the offer and force a trade.

Collectively, the Oliver and Petracca trades have cost us $3.5 million in cap space for an extra pick. It is false economy.

These long deals are bad for us.
