By the way DZ, just say Clayton falls out with GWS and they have a cancel clause, do we still have to pay off the $650?

Or are we covered?

Wasn't it reported that we basically paid our bit in a lump sum to get it off our books asap. Even if our cap is affected by it for a few more years. Same thing with Goodwin I think.

After the debacle with the Treloar trade to the Dogs, the AFL simplified the rules around this stuff. Essentially if you are traded to another club and the first club agrees to pay part of the contract. Their portion is put into it's own contract. So the new club can renegotiate things down the line it won't affect the agreement with the first club.

Same thing happened when we traded Grundy to Sydney. Collingwood were still left on the hook for their bit because they had a contract with Grundy, not us. Sydney were happy to pay him what we were so we didn't have to cover it at all.

An aside but how did we miss singing "That's Petracca" while we had him...

Fans would sing about players they loved (or hated), things that happened on the pitch (or off it), adapting melodies from popular songs or full chants from other teams while simply tweaking the lyrics to suit the subject. One of many, many such examples: Dean Martin’s That’s Amore became a tribute by Brighton fans to Bobby Zamora.

From a great article in the Age about why the Barmy Army are streets ahead of Aussie cricket fans when it comes to match day singing.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/why-don-t-aussie-sporting-crowds-sing-like-the-brits-do-blame-the-beatles-20251229-p5nqh1.html

Not too late.....

When you’re kicking for goal

And you can’t even score, that’s Petracca

When your brand is a mess and your girlfriend is stressed that’s Petracca

Fans will sing, kick the thing, stats are great, try your hardest

What’s the point, when its done, if you kick and can’t hit a target….

I’ve liked everything King has done so far besides the handling of Clarry.

Why did the players the line up for round 1 and it was a blank canvass but tell Clarrie a legend of the club he will be playing for Casey?

Do you actually know what was in that conversation? I dont. I thought he was told that he'd probably be playing a new position. I hope King didn't go out of his way to raise the possibility of Casey games. But in all honestly ANY player should know theyre not guaranteed senior games and I doubt King was guaranteeing Oliver that he'd get no senior games.

I too would like to know the basis of King supposedly telling him he'd be playing at Casey. Why would he say such an inflamatory thing unless they had an acrimonious meeting. Which of these is more likely:

  1. He said 'you may have to play a new role'. OR:

  2. He said 'you may have to play a new role and if you don't like it you'll be at Casey'. ?

Surely he'd say 1. first. And if Oliver replied 'but I'm hopeless at playing any other role, or just won't' why would King mention Casey? - surely he'd make apporpriate soothing coaching noises 'we can work through that etc etc) I'd be surprised if any experienced coach would issue the Casey 'threat' even if Oliver gave a very offensive response to 1. Why should I (as an ignorant outsider) assume King would not cool things down.

So my feeling is that IF they did have an acrimonious meeting, then King wanted him gone for other reasons (which I don't know about, but some here seem to). If King wanted him, he'd have kept the conversation cordial.

That's very, very good @jnrmac ! I'll see your Petracca song and raise you a DDJ (Double Dad Joke).

Sherlock Holmes is out skindiving with his faithful associate when Watson exclaims "My goodness Holmes, what's that weird creature over there?".

The detective has a look and replies "It's a yellow manta ray, my dear Watson".

Just then Dean Martin swims by and says "And that eel next to it? That's a moray".

Exactly

It's either:

a) Coach outlines new game plan and tells player what he needs to do to fit in to it. Player spits dummy and leaves. or;

b) Coach tells trouble maker about the new 'no DH policy' and player leaves.

Doesn't matter which. I'm happy. The club moves on.

As much as we love Clarry he had issues. And from the outside those issues were affecting other players including Trac as reported. A great player, but at the same time hasn't been that great lately for us at least.

King has a vision, playing Clarry in only the mid was not part of it, we needed change in that area. It appears Clarry didn't like that idea and asked to be traded and we helped him move on.

Will we be a better "Team" from this, I hope so. While he get back to his best at GWS, who knows. Is it done, yes....

Yeah but many can't or won't move on!

Why would do just that if he wasn't told this??

The video evidence of him trying to get back much earlier and having an arguement with Selwyn Griffiths I think it was!

No it was actually a lot of other video evidence of him off field at the time.

It had very little to do with football, infact during that time i doubt he would have even known what a football was…

Got no choice really. Opening Round should be the end of it. Actually now would be better.

I agree our midfield is currently our biggest weakness, closely followed by the forward line... the bet that was made was on Langford, Windsor & XL to come through and that will take another 2-3 seasons before we will be able to tell one way or another.

Love Riv, Viney and the support crew in Steele, Sparrow but they are just solid B/C graders and unfortunately will not be enough for us to be competitive (make the 8). Whilst Kozzy is a star himself, it will be interesting to see if he alone can make a difference. My guess is that he'll likely attract a tag and based on what i have seen, he doesn't tend to do well with that type of attention.

That is why you need at least A graders in every midfield to be competitive and probably 3-4 to have a real chance of winning a flag. With the way the game is trending though, you also need a solid rebound capability and that means HB flankers and im surprised we didnt invest more into that part of the ground as well.

GS_1905, Key Backs - Steven May, Harrison Petty, Tom McDonald, Daniel Turner, Jake Lever and Jed Adams

Back flankers - C Jiath, Xavier Taylor, Blake Howes, Xavier Lindsay, Trent Rivers, Jake Bowey, Christian Salem, Andy Moniz- Wakefield

Mids - Jack Steele, Jack Viney, Kysaiah Pickett AA, Caleb Windsor, Ed Langdon, Jai Culley, Harvey Langford, Tom Sparrow, Trent Rivers, Koltyn Tholstrup.

Fwd’s - Brody Mihocek, Jacob van Rooyen, Bailey Fritsch, Jake Melksham, Shane McAdam, Aidan Johnson, Kade Chandler, Harry Sharp, Mathew Jefferson, Luker Kentfield, Latrell Pickett and potentially Thomas Mathews

Rucks- Max Gawn AA, Max Heath, Tom Campbell, Kalani White (JvR, AJ, TC spares, Kalani building craft and strength)

Jack Steele is a 2x AA and will be given a lot of rope, a fit JV is a brute tackling machine, Kozzie AA, Langdon B+, Rivers should go to B+ as could Langford and Windsor.

Do we have enough A+’s, B and B+ players on our list, well Kingy has thrown down the gauntlet and said that all positions are open and will be decided during the preseason and practice games, GS personally I have a strong belief that this group of 20-25 years olds will rattle the cages this year and that is exactly what he wants to happen. Losing CP5 and C13 weakened us But allows a lot of new opportunities for our youngsters and the new game plan to develop and be accepted more readily.

While it is possible Oliver posted an image of himself in a Casey jumper to indicate that King made a "Casey threat', it's hardly proof. Oliver may have just thought that was a way of emphasising he did not want to play a new role - "I guess I'll be Casey bound - see pic". It doesn't mean there was a direct threat from the coach.

But if it was true such a threat (implicit or explicit) was made, it is more likely that an experienced coach really wanted to get rid of him rather than that he erred in how he handled Oliver in the meeting.

To comply with Aus Accounting Standards all payments were recorded as being paid in our last financial year (although the payments are going to happen in the future.) I think we should have a liability some where in our books for the outstanding amounts, I think.

Sue, if this was threatened, then it was a MAJOR blunder by an inexperienced coach, not an experienced one, can you imagine Chris Fagan saying this??

I just think this is a complete Furphy. The club (led by Richardson and Green?) had had enough, and with a new coach wanted to put a broom through the place, with Oliver first to be shown the door. The "play in different positions" is maybe how it was presented, at least publicly, but it was always just a way of everyone saving face. Not to mention, going through the motions of maintaining some semblance of trade value for him. (A waste of time as it turned out, no-one wanted to touch him.)
