Long term contracts aren’t always a bad thing.

As @Lucifers Hero says, Clarry netted us such an awful return for other reasons (off field stuff, and our mishandling which led to us having no negotiating leverage).

The benefit is having them contracted for next year. There is only liability thereafter.

i think its a simple change. It wont stop the leaking of a player is disgruntled to the media but it wont make it official either so the club can continue to come out and plead ignorance and play a straight bat saying its not entertaining any deals as the player is contracted and they havent heard anything.

I dont think this changes the Oliver situation at all but it would have given us a little more leverage in the Trac deal, where without his salary in the frame, we could have gotten a bit more for him on the open market.

Agree gs_1905 salary structuring seems way out of whack imagine in business your on a great salary and you want to move to one of your rival companies and expect your current contract to be maintained. As soon as you want to move your contact should be null and void, also they need to be structured better to protect the employee more, seems like we are being penalised for no fault of our own. Equal responsibility for both parties. AFL and clubs need to review the whole contract process with Players association.

I calculated the points (not sure if i was using the current system or the old one) as Petracca being worth around pick 2. I don't think it would have been THAT much different as long as we weren't dealing with the Eagles.

Perhaps. But we would have been able to match the offer and force a trade.

Collectively, the Oliver and Petracca trades have cost us $3.5 million in cap space for an extra pick. It is false economy.

These long deals are bad for us.

I fear it is within both the club and Clarries interests that a few years pass before the full story and facts (if they ever do), come out.

I would actually be pretty angry if the problems of the past few years (I.e. the previous administration) was carried over into this one and we are, yet again, in the media, front and centre, getting pilloried and made to continually look (or be exposed take your pick) like a disaster.

I could personally go one year without any bull [censored] from the club.
