Let's all just take a deep breath and wait to see how things look after the trade period and drafts have been completed.

what? and miss all this fun?

I actually think its perfect. If we can get something for Petracca and Oliver, move them on, and let them enjoy their football, they have great years ahead of them, and we should get some good value. Guerra seems to be rocking the boat, and has an appetite for change, which is fantastic. King is assertive, no-nonsense, and clear minded. No doubt he will set high standards, and not waiver - on and off field.

Grundy & Jordon just placed 2nd & 3rd in the Swans b&f, my god Goodwin ran this club into the ground

Trade week is a lot of fun and entertainment

almost more entertainment that the actual footy

Jackson, Jordan, Harmes, Neale-Bullen, Oliver, May, Pertacca, Spargo - that's 38% of the 21 Premiership team that will end up playing GOOD football at other clubs. It hardly screams great club culture does it?

NONE OF GEELONG'S 2022 PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS HAVE PLAYED FOR OTHER CLUBS!!!!'

Maybe they should have after last Saturday.

I can't take all the self-pity over all this, it reminds me of the Collingwood fans who were about to set themselves on fire the night Treloar etc... were traded. Shame we have to lose multiple club legends at the same time, but that's the modern business and it's not like any of them are at their peak.

I'm saving my outrage for when the replacement players are hacks or play three games in five years.

I'm also reminded of Blight starting at the Crows. He got rid of Tony McGuinness, Chris McDermott, Andrew Jarman and the fans were furious. I doubt it's identical but the Crows went from being clapped off the ground after losing comfortably to an extremely new Port Adelaide team to months later win the first of two consecutive flags. King's first week could turn out to be inspired.

His intercept and pass to Fritta in the third quarter to kickstart our comeback was a blinder.

Apart from that, he had 13 other touches and didn't make anybody's best players list on the day.

I was ready to pay a kings ransom for the kick, for all that he was/is a scallywag that was an immortal kick, you could retire happy with that.

He wasn’t alone. Kate Roffey and Gary Pert played big parts as well.

In all of this, the blokes who seem most settled and of quality character have remained. Gawn, Viney, TMac, Langdon, Melk, Kozzie, Rivers und so weiter. Can't be that bad a club...

I thought about putting this in a few of the threads. Not sure if this is the right one but .... it might be.

Just a thought on what might be the broader picture in the situation with Petracca and Oliver.

Let me see…..

May under contract and told he is free to look for another club…

Petracca under contract, had his situation discussed with him and told about the role he could expect to play in the team. Was also told that he could explore his options if he wanted to.

Oliver under contract, same as Petracca… told what was expected of him and his role within the team as from next season. Told he could look around if he wanted to.

These three are, of course, senior, very experienced players that have some decisions to make with regard to their immediate futures. Serious business.

However, I applaud the club for the positions they have taken with these players. That is not to say that I consider any of the players at fault. The process that the club has in place strikes me as a mature response and a very professional one at that.

Over the last 10/15 years more power and control has evolved to the players with respect to where they play and how they honour their contract conditions. In a lot of respects, they have demanded that clubs become more professional.

With the replacement of the coach, CEO and, in the near future, the President, MFC is looking to throw some of the professional responsibility back on the players and their agents.

“You want to move with 5 years on your contract, well, feel free to have a look around to see if you can satisfy our requirements. However, be assured that if we are not satisfied and a trade cannot be made, we will hold you to your contract and expect a proper, professional playing approach from you. The club will not be actively seeking a trade for you this off-season”

I see nothing wrong with this approach at all. While it is squarely putting a lot of the responsibility back in the Player and their agents it is also taking back a good degree of control for the club. The player and his team might arrive at a preferred club but, rather than make the statement and throw it over to the club to work out with an expectation that they will negotiate and sort it out, in this situation it is the responsibility of the player and his nominated club to present a deal to MFC. This leaves a lot of power in the hands of MFC. In fact, the MFC do not have to state what deal will satisfy them. All they need to do is to say…. “Sorry, that is not good enough. If that is your last word, he plays out his contract.”

I can see the whole of the playing group working through the implications of this attitude by the club.

May situation is a little different. He is that bit older than Petracca and Oliver is losing a pace or two, not as flexible as he once was and is being looked at as a possible disrupter on the list. He has been great for us, but this is a new era for the club.

I hope that the coaches and the club administration continue with this direction. it will make a refreshing change with the coaches, in particular supervising, directing and controlling the playing list within the constrains of a clear vision and approach. All, the players, coaches and club need to know where they stand.

Thank you for this and it helped form a thought bubble that has been percolating for awhile. Trac has had a game plan built around him, no problem with that, but he represents a considerable amount of effort for others that fill in for his defensive running etc. While he has a license to roam and burst, it means others have extras to do. Now while I don’t mind that when it works, when it doesn’t work it is costing us flexibility with other game plans and I’m pretty sure every coach in the league has got the memo. Now I’m not sure that Tracc gets how much is done for him - and without doubt he does a huge amount to prepare himself, but these poor me vibes kind of stick in the back of my throat. I can understand the Coach thinking the ‘Tracc Play’ is stale and needs a rebuild. Tracc not being onboard with that or whatever leads us to the current scenario. I dearly love the bull like power and leg drive, but almost equally (big disagreement in my family about this) I think his lack of confidence in his set shot kicking has become a cancer for other forwards, I love the manic miracle goals, but the percentage of routine money in the bank shots has dried up so badly I am not opening a vein about the prospect of him leaving. (Check back when he kicks 6 on us).

1 it’s 5 years by the start of next season it’s expected a good chunk of players would no longer be here

2 No one is crying over harmes or spargo leaving.

3 if Oliver didn’t have such a long contract he would have already been let go to, do you honestly still think he is a premium midfielder

4 May is physically cooked everyone could see that for the last 18 months, he had a good career but we have moved past him see point 2

5 Jordan couldn’t lock a spot in the side and saw the writing on the wall he had no future outside of depth.

6 That just leaves Trac, ANB and Jackson who we actually would have preferred to keep, but let’s be honest ANB is a roll player who many on here were happy to see the back of. Trac we possibly will get a premium for so mid to long that could work out a win, leaving just Jackson who we got a good trade for all things considered but who we couldn’t have done anymore to keep. 1 to 2 actual losses isn’t bad

And right there you have it . . . the reason why South finished 10th on the ladder, five percent in front of us.

Well folks, I think we’ve found it - the Jumping the Shark Award for post of the year.

Came around the outside like Kiwi in the ’83 Cup and gazumped us all at the eleventh hour. A thread nobody saw coming in even our wildest dreams. The timing, the audacity, the sheer theater of it. Only thing missing is Bruce McAvaney leaning in with that trademark whisper: “special.”

And Oskar Baker & Frost were getting games this year in better teams than ours.

Umm Frost has been delisted.

Keep draining the Swamp

We're overhauling the list and now is the right time to do it

If we waited another year or 2 it would be a year or 2, too late

We're going to have a whole bunch of new players added but we'll need 2 off-seasons to make all the necessary changes

And there's a few in the FD who'll need to shape up, otherwise next year will be their last year (notably Lamb & Richardson)

What’s occurred at our club over the last 2 seasons has been diabolical and losing our premiership heroes this way with no send off is very sad, it’s a reflection of poor club mgt, not withstanding that its self inflicted by the players themselves through poor choices or egos way too big

ANB says hello. Covered off a fair bit of some of the mids' defensive running & checking (Tracc included), especially on the fat side of stoppages to protect the corridor and offer the occasional offensive outlet prior to his departure.

Not sure Goody managed to cover this loss or adjust for it effectively thereafter.

But, but, but, Pert said it was the best culture he had ever seen

Think what Perty meant was the culture of the 2021 Premiership team was the best he had seen for 40 years and got it a little wrong in detail.

If you look at that comment in this light I don’t think you would ever get any argument about the comment.

Maybe extend that to nearly 60 years. Ie 57 years.

BUT think he was talking about his 40 years of footy since he began when he was a youth.

@58er All I know is that under Goodwin, Pert and Roffey yes we had achieved our best culture since the late 80’s and possibly the 60’s, but their ego’s ensured it vanished as quickly as it arrived.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
