He has a worse CV than Ned Guy from the Magpies and he got moved on quickly after the contract debacles at the Pies. He’s kept our stars by bending over to whatever they wanted. I’m glad Cornes is putting some heat on him.

MELBOURNE has secured its most prized signature yet, with superstar midfielder Christian Petracca agreeing to a mammoth seven-year deal.

The Demons officially announced the re-signing of Petracca on Wednesday, securing the Brownlow Medal favourite's future with the club until at least the end of the 2029 season.

It takes Petracca out of the free agency picture next year and follows reports strongly linking the supremely talented 25-year-old with a potential future move to Collingwood.

MELBOURNE has ensured one of its best players will be a Demon for life, moving early to secure gun midfielder Clayton Oliver to a monster seven-year contract extension on Thursday.

The deal, which is tipped to be worth around $7 million, will ensure Oliver will remain at Melbourne until at least 2030.Oliver will now be at Melbourne until the age of 33, having already emerged as one of the club's most valuable players on his way to three best and fairests, two All-Australian blazers and a premiership last season.

As one of the best players in the competition, we are delighted that Clayton has turned his back on free agency and chosen to commit to the club. It shows the faith he has in our playing group and coaches and it is huge endorsement of the culture we have built under Simon," Melbourne list boss Tim Lamb said.

"Clayton is an elite midfielder who has shown incredible consistency over his career, highlighted by the three Bluey Truscott Trophies already to his name. He is loved and respected by his teammates and coaches and is a key pillar of our ambitions to achieve sustained success.

No idea. Anyone with his run sheet would have been long gone from most clubs by now !!!

Frankly the deals signed by both Petracca and Oliver and agreed to by the club were absolutely disgraceful, both in length and dollar value. At the very least there should have been a performance element attached.

Hawthorn, Richmond, Geelong and Brisbane remained in contention for years by ensuring that key players were well paid, but not excessively paid, to ensure that they could keep their premiership lists together and add additional talent.

Lamb caved to the ridiculous demands of these players and their managers and has left us with a horrible mess to clean up. I don't think the Pickett and Viney deals are any better to be honest.

He is the last person on the planet that I would trust to fix the situation that we currently find ourselves in.

List Manager Tim Lamb said it was a good opportunity to sit down with Oliver alongside new Senior Coach Steven King and outline the club’s plans.

“Today was a good chance to sit down with Clayton and share how Steven and the coaches see the game being played, and where the opportunities lie for him,” Lamb said.

“We were upfront with Clayton around the role he is likely to play next season and the need for him to develop his craft beyond the midfield to have his biggest impact within the team.

“It was honest and respectful, and Clayton is now clear on what we see his role being next year, and how we think he can best contribute.

But I’m not sure Clarry saw it as still being a place to support and embrace him

Nine’s Tom Morris reported on social media platform X on Thursday: “Melbourne has told Clayton Oliver today they can’t guarantee him a spot in the senior team in 2026 and would be happy to facilitate a fair trade if he can find a new home. If not, VFL football beckons.

Goodwin should have dropped more of their senior players for underperforming. If Clayton was one those players dropped , it may have been a wake up call.

Imagine if Clayton began next season in the two's , the crowd would be enormous!!!!!. However I cannot see this happening as he will bend the knee by doing what is expected.

Lamby’s doing ok- comes into focus this time each year, and gets a lot of stick for what he and the team do. Considering that the proof is never there until the fat lady sings (McAdam, etc) and we are changing our game style, i give him my support to get to work and make magic happen.

We were all rapt when Kozzy was resigned, if he wants to leave in a couple of years, is that Lamby’s failure, Kingy’s, Kozzy’s or the universe?

You can only by the stuff that is on sale. Most of what we bought over the last few years did not really cost us much, (2nd round picks). The players who have exited - how is that lamb’s doing?

I would say the only thing that has hamstrung him, is his own incompetence. Should have been the first person sacked.

I do think this should be Tim Lambs last trade period, some of the things he has done (and hasn't done) has been an absolute failure on the club. Get on the lookout for the next best list manager we can find as part of the clean out.

I agree we caved in. the tail was wagging the dog. noone predicted the drop off by both players, but Oliver especially was a poor kick even at his best and can only play midfield, so it was too big a contract.

A great question. He is clearly no longer the ideal person to be list manager. Move him on before he does even further damage and our stay at the bottom of the ladder is longer than necessary. We’ll end up like WCE if he stays on.

the other issue with Clarry's contract is his Behavorial issues were well known so at the least there should have been some good behaviour clauses to protect the club.

Its easy to say this in retrospect but the deals signed were on the basis that our window was well open and to keep pur core group of players together for the next 5 years. In round 23 2023 we were well positioned for another tilt at the flag but Melkshams ACL followed by Maynards hit on Brayshaw culminated in close finals losses to Collingwood and Carlton. This occured at the same time as problems with May, Oliver and Smith's behaviour and the pressure built.

The long term deals were to keep our window open and ensure other teams could not throw godfather money at our stars. The long term contracts were not provide security if a player became unhappy or had significant behavioural issues.

I don't know if it's click bait but apparently Zak Butters wants to come back to Victoria. If Lamb landed him he would go from the slaughter to list management genius and we wouldn't have to worry about who will captain after Max. I'm hopeful but doubtful we can pull it off. Please footballing Gods shine on us for once

Only good thing about Butters maybe being available as a "Pre-agent" it might distract some people away from B Humphrey
