I would like to give some respect to the Demon's most successful coach of almost a lifetime.

111 wins, 1 draw, 90 losses.

202 games behind only Smith, Hughes and Daniher.

55% overall win rate which puts him just ahead of Northey and Ivor Warne-Smith, and behind only fellow premiership coaches Hughes, Chadwick and Norm Smith.

His tenure will be remembered for an extraordinary list of near misses in so many different ways.

The tragic 2023 finals where we lost two games by a total of 9 points between them, and also lost one of our most esteemed leaders in a moment for which the injustice tainted many supporter's love of the game.

The extraordinary one-straight-kick percentage gap which coast the Demons a finals spot in 2017.

And so many of the little 'moments' that just didn't drop our way.

But for all that, the legacy will always be late season surge of 2021, where for a magic long moment the plan all came together.

Journeyman tall forwards under injury clouds came good and played their role.

Star midfielders with inconsistent disposal found their groove at the same time.

The defensive efforts worked like a terrifying hive-mind, giving away just 56 points per game in finals and for four rounds leading to them.

And finally, the most dominant 45 minutes of grand final football in the history of the game, when destiny was seized and the chapter was turned on a half-century of perennial disappointment.

Many called for change, and we all will be feeling a nervous optimism for a refreshed club, but let's not mix the enthusiasm for a new start with any bitterness in reflection.

Let's do it right and speak of Goodwin as the drought-breaking premiership coach who will be a loved part of the club for many years to come.

Big respect for ending the drought AND ending it in that manner with 3 demolition jobs. Got a bit squeaky for a bit against the dogs but this team just put the foot down. Not sure a team has had a September that dominant before.

He will be forever a premiership coach. Has been relentlessly combated by the media, and even by us as supporters. He geniunely cared and put his blood, sweat, and tears into our team for 9 years. And for that I salute and thank him, and I'm sure the players do too.

Thank you Goody. You took us to the promised land. Unfairly hounded by media. However, it was time for change.

He was a hell of a coach, but unfortunately it seemed he lost the team or his way.

It was a decision made in good faith, hopefully it pans out really well. Goodie believed the club wasn’t far away from success and I don’t really disagree, I think a few changes in method and team should work wonders.

Glad he got Kossie to sign up before he was sacked.

I believe Goody came to love the club (and was loved by the players) and led us to much success as stated above.

I'll kind of miss that (sometimes) frustrating smirk/zen state following the games!

Unbelievably grateful to Goodwin for what he did for us. Delivered one of the great sportings days of my life and one that i will not forget till the day i die. An all time Demon great.

But I want to single out describing our 2021 Premiership defence as working like a "terrifying hive mind" - this has to be one of the all-time great lines on Demonlad.

You gave 100% every single day and the players love you.

We were the best team in the league over the 2021-2023 period. Something I never thought I would be able to say.

So happy hearing Luke Hodge emphatically playing down the notion that 2020 and 2021 should have an asterisk. Richmond and Melbourne by a country mile the best sides. Let’s not forget the free ride for Brisbane choking in 2020 with home matches and home finals..

Even playing field, full season in ‘21 especially and Goodwin engineered a game style that for 3 years was near unbreakable. Asides from the Sydney Qualifying Final in ‘22, I’d argue that we beat ourselves in the other 3 losses, not necessarily being outplayed by Collingwood, Carlton and Brisbane. Should have made at least another GF, but the failure of not doing so is on the entire club.

To keep the players motivated and focused in ‘21 was something Goodwin should always be proud of.

Thank you Simon, you can probably never quite imagine your impact in delivering that flag. Having supported the Dees over six decades it was simply unbelievable and a joyous moment for me and all Dees supporters. We went from hoping to win to expecting to win, that is also a great legacy.

I cannot thank you enough. You are a Red and Blue legend.

Outside of his accomplishments in terms of wins and losses, I’ve always had the sense Goody is a decent person who genuinely cared about his players.

I’ve never been a fan of the “tough guy” persona we so often see in footy, so it was a pleasure having the leader of our club genuinely seem to care about the well-being of our players and who they are as people.

Has Goodwin already been made a life member of our club? If not, that needs to happen. (Perhaps not immediately, but at a time when he's ready to accept it.)

I’m guessing it’ll be when the board is fully turned over. If I were in his shoes, getting sacked with 3 games left after putting up with years of management turmoil and off field drama would leave me holding a pretty lengthy grudge against folks who seem more interested in self preservation than anything else.

I imagine it's automatic, based on games? He qualifies in spades there.

I like it that he feels he'll always be a Melbourne person and retain his love for same.
