Yep. Guessing they’d have taken the 3 standouts which sound like it was Buckley, Kelly and lade. If Buckley was the favourite he may have been offered the role and decline which is odd. Why go through all this only to say no?

I don’t want to jump to conclusions but I’d be [censored] off at Bucks IF this was the case

Not sure why he would go this deep into the process unless he was 99% sure he wanted the job

Meanwhile there are assistants chomping at the bit for a senior coaching interview, who have potentially been cost a shortlist because of Buckley’s indecision

I’ll stop myself there because it’s still an IF, but not liking how this has shaped if it turns out to be true

EDIT - posted this one second before Steven King was announced so DISREGARD 🤣

Club email just arrived.

I am excited to share that we are proud to announce Steven King as the 28th AFL/VFL Senior Coach of the Melbourne Football Club.

Maybe we knocked Buckley back….

Bucks apparently couldn’t answer the question “if we offered you the job right now, would you take it”

Stranger that Buckley would rather coach an imaginary team than the oldest club in the AFL.

His loss.

King has it!

just got the email!

Our new King! A brilliant apprenticeship.

Oldest club in the AFL… they didn’t email…

They’re too classy for that.

He received a scroll via carrier pigeon.

The AFL campaign/arm twisting won the day.

Hope we got the needed $30m for Caulfield and No games ever again at Geelong from the AFL.

Someone able to post the letter as emails playing up!

Dear members,

As you know, we have been working through the appointment of our next AFL senior coach, and after a thorough process, I am excited to share that we are proud to announce Steven King as the 28th AFL/VFL Senior Coach of the Melbourne Football Club.

Steven’s appointment follows an extensive process, whereby the Board unanimously accepted the recommendation of the selection panel, consisting of myself, CEO Paul Guerra, Director Steven Smith, GM of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson, former Essendon Captain Jobe Watson, Melbourne Storm Director of Football Frank Ponissi and Human Resources Executive Meahan Callaghan.

We had five amazing candidates that presented to the panel, each impressive in their own right. The further we progressed, the more apparent it became that Steven is the right person to lead us forward. He has an enormous amount of experience, a deep understanding of the game, and a coaching philosophy we think our players will thrive under.

For those unfamiliar with Steven’s experience, he played 240 senior games across a 15-year career at both Geelong and St Kilda. He captained the Cats for four seasons and achieved the ultimate success in 2007, when he was part of their premiership team.

He switched to St Kilda ahead of the 2008 season, featuring in three campaigns before hanging up the boots in 2010. He quickly shifted to coaching, where he remained at the Saints for two seasons, later heading to Whitten Oval. His tenure at the Western Bulldogs including a premiership (2016) and Grand Final appearance (2021).

Steven then took a senior assistant coaching role at the Gold Coast SUNS in 2022, where he was also appointed caretaker coach for seven matches at the back end of 2023. Following this, he returned to Geelong and has since been working with the club’s midfield for the past two seasons.

This truly is a significant day for our club, one that brings a lot of excitement for what lies ahead. In speaking to Steven, he wants nothing more than to work together, to get our AFL program back to the top. This is an exciting new chapter and I am so excited by seeing what our AFL program can achieve with Steven at the helm.

Given Geelong’s season is still alive, Steven will continue in his assistant coach role and officially join us at the end of the Cats’ AFL Finals campaign.

He is incredibly excited to be on this journey with us all and can’t wait for what’s ahead.

Please join me in congratulating Steven on this appointment.

Go Dees.
