Who Will Be Our Next Coach?

Featured Replies

Just heard Bucks say on commentary "I think expected score is a waste of time" 👏

Buckley’s commentary is a good insight to his thinking. I’m happy to have him as our coach. He understands the game. He knows the pressure. I think he’d be highly motivated and respected. Get him in. 4 year deal gets it done.

Is Whitford any chance of being looked at as a candidate?

Has good pedigree / experience in winning flags with Nth Launceston, the senior assistamt during the 2022 flag for Casey etc and getting them into the finals from nowhere this season.

Has got the Casey boys well sorted. Almost everyone knows their role on the day. They are desperate and run in waves for each other on the sling shot turnovers. Defend extremely well in most cases as well.

Could do alot worse imv.

The coach should be asked firstly how you'd fix our forward line in the fact we deliver the ball properly & how'd you get them to lead separately than all go to the one spot.

I wouldn't think so.

He would need to have had at a minimum senior (AFL) assistant coaching experience.

Now this is the $64 question. But perhaps a better question as opposed how are you going to 'fix' something...is... What are you going to BUILD and how are are you going to do it ??

For mine its the latter.

Need to build an essentially new team. This ones worn out. There is the semblance of a new order coming through and imho that's what you take and build upon.

Getting the duct tape out and slapping it around ... nahh !!

I want a coach to create a new era side.

I heard that too and thought it was very interesting. Wonder what the thought processes of the players would be if a new coach came in saying that, I know Max has commented in the past that Goodwin's focus on expected score did his head in sometimes (after the 23 finals series?)

Starting to warm to him.

If he said the same about disposal efficiency and mentioned that Eddie McGuire was a clownish, blustering [censored], I'd be giving him a ten-year contract.

Any link ? Cheers

Brendon Lade, James Kelly and Danny Daly formally spoken to.

Shortlist to be whittled down to 6 for further interviews.

Buckley, Enright and Skipworth the favourites for me. Giansiracusa the Smokey.

I am the most confused little rpfc that ever did live…

Dannyz is up there with Chook in Perth as the ones with inside info to the club and is detailing what is the skeleton of a process.

Thank the football gods.

Dannyz has a pretty long track record of inside Intel.

Yep that's fair

Appreciate this then.

I am not sold on Skipwroth but would be happy with any of Buckley, Enright, Lade or Kelly. Not sure about Daly either - reeks of David Noble.

Spoke to an Essendon supporter who told me that Skipworth's coaching method is shouting and waving arms on the boundary. Similar to this guy:

What is wrong with disposal efficiency?

I think that stat, for the most part, shows how skilled you are.

Like raw hitout totals, only useful as a guide, and then not a particulary useful one.

The issue with DE and Kicking Efficiency is they don't differentiate between positions, for example a half back flanker has way more easy sideways chips than an inside mid, whose possessions are alwayss ndet pressure.

Similary if one team us putting on a lot more pressure, lower DE might be a function of that pressure. Or not.

Better measures to get a sense of realise kicking and hanballing skills are turnovers, scores from turnover, goal kicking accuracy and clangers.

Glad it looks somewhat like a real process. They can get a lot of insight in to the list and the way it’s viewed across the league as well as different perspectives on coaching from the initial interviews.

With Gob Bluth on the committee as well as our new CEO/essendon super fan I expect a current Essendon assistant will get a good look in.

If it’s not bucks, which I think it will be

Danny Daly as senior coach and cam Bruce as senior assistant would be a pretty strong second choice. raid the Brisbane lions

The way it's measured is fatally flawed. And that means you get results like this:

Disposal Efficiency in 2025:

Tom McDonald 85.3%

Ed Langdon 77.2%

Massimo D'Ambrosio 70.6%

Zach Merrett and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera 68.8%

If it measured skill, the least skilful player in the league (with over 180 disposals for the season) would be Nate Caddy.

I don't even think it's somewhat useful or you can take something out of it. It's a complete junk stat.

As long as they aren’t the coaching equivalents of Sharp and Fullarton

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.
