Who Will Be Our Next Coach?

24 years?! If you're including as a player and assistant coach doesn't that mean he won on 2010?

yeah true

I meant mainly as a player 14 years and head coach 9 years with no success

But he does get some credit for being assistant coach

Interesting that they won a flag just before he coached and just after

It would end my year on a high if Nev came back.

What concerns me the most about our next coach is that Richardson is involved in the process.

He is one that must go, i never liked the appointment to start with. IMHO the whole football department needs to go and the new coach can bring in his people.

The new FD Boss need to be a senior type, like Neil Balme, not a nobody that doesnt get respected from day one.

Buckley is the re-energizer. He inherited an aging list (Didak, Jolly, Krakeour, Ball, Maxwell, Johnson, Swan), turned the list over knowing he had to introduce youth and took them back into the Grand Final in a year where they were paying $31 for the flag and people writing them off.

That is one way to look at it and is valid.

Another way is he inherited a premiership/PF team in the previous 2 years with a prime Pendlebury, Dale Thomas, Heath Shaw, Travis Cloke, Ben Reid, Beams, etc. Later added Grundy, Elliot, Adams, etc.

Then missed the next 4 years of finals.

Impressive to rebuild and almost snag a flag but I thought he could have done better with the list he inherited.

Not sure us supporters would accept missing finals the next 4 years

Buckley, like whoever coaches us will want to know precisely what support he will receive from the both MFC and AFL in regard to important matters like cheating from the AFL sub bodies, tribunal, umpiring bias and media purging.

What does this even mean?

Bro. They know that the club has the power. It would look weak to go to a club and especially look silly if they weren’t interested in you at all.

this isn’t applying for McDonald’s or to work in retail…

Do you think that they actually have people approach them when they are one of 19 employers who can offer this type of role.. cmon now..

G, I understand what u r saying but there is nothing wrong with being proactive and contacting the club to let them know u r interested imo.

I kinda concur. I've got jobs in tge past where there ostensibly wasn't one. But I enquired and was keen. Here there IS a job.

I don't mind that anyone would ask if keen.

As a world we get caught up in ritual than need not apply.

Left fielders can be good.

Just as an aside, I work for a Carlton Coterie Member and former player sponsor and he and his son told me about a week ago that he had firm intel that Carlton are after Daly and that it would happen in 2026.

Personally he is the other coach that gets my interest.

My only thought was after the fiascos of 2024 we might need someone who has wide afl community respect and gratitude if we are to plug the mid-age gap in our list.

Mind you imagine the media hate if we had got Houston now...

I just think its depressing that us Dee's fans are once again impatient of off season trades, changes and appointments.

Was nice while it lasted. Thanks Goodie!

And if we had gir him we would have missed out Lindsay!

The argument was they needed percentage to finish top 4 which is incorrect. If the Hawks beat the Lions they finish top 4 and get the double chance. Lose and they don't. Percentage is irrelevant to that.

Had Collingwood won on Saturday night Geelong may have been in 1st and Adelaide 2nd. So this talk about home final is grasping at best. Hawks destiny is in their own hands now as it relates to the double chance, and all this grasping at straws to try and justify why our performance in the last 4 minutes was commendable is laughable. We were pathetic on the weekend, that's the end of the story.

No! I'm not excusing 96 minutes of last week. But it's disingenuous to argue that Hawthorn aren't trying to finish as high as they can. I know when we missed finals in 2017 by a bee's appendage we had a late game against lowly Carlton where we coughed up a lot of late goals. It was easy to forget as Collingwood won and Adelaide rested players that we still would've gotten through on percentage but for the Carlton lapse. Hawthorn might rue their late lapse too.

BTW if people want to look at the St Kilda comeback and our other close losses and say "yes, but scoreboard!" they should be saying the same about last week and accepting the "inaccurate" margin.

Why do I get a certain vibe each time I see the name 'Danny Daly' (and enhanced if I see 'Fagin' (sic) linked to it)?...

He is exactly the type of coach we need. We don’t need a rebuild, just a reset, and Buckley has proven he can re-shape an AFL list back into contention.

He’s also a big name, so without a proper training base, players might compromise driving to Casey just to work with him.

Also, considering how the Collingwood administration off field was a basket case from 2013 with back room infighting, I reckon Buckley did well all things considering as a first time coach.

With a new CEO and President inbound, we may finally have a stable environment for Buckley to thrive under

The 2010 pies grand final winning team is the youngest in afl history, when he took over in 2012 they were still extremely young for team that had made back to back grand finals, they were the opposite of aged list, bucks took over a side that should have been in contention for years to come.

I dunno. I'm sure people have looked at/ listened to stuff older people have raved about and scratched their heads. But who knows - maybe you'd enjoy 80s Brit show, Minder, with the dodgy Arthur Daley and his muscle Terry.

I’m sorry but this is absolute nonsense. He inherited the youngest premiership team of all time. Younger even than the 93 “baby Bombers”.

Despite inheriting this list, he only took the team to finals 5 out of his 10 seasons.

I hope he’s learned some lessons and will be better the second time around but let’s not pretend his first stint as a senior coach was an impressive one.

If I couldn't understand what someone had written, I most certainly would not have put my query along the lines of " what does this even mean?"

Which is sort of ....how could you possibly construct a sentence like that, and therefore I refuse to understand it..

So Ox in the letters of PJSW.ALIAS ME.........GFY.

We would do very well to have someone like Daly as senior coach

Putting aside his tactical acumen, the work he and Fagan have done to turn Brisbane into a well oiled machine can’t be understated, and it’s a key part of their onfield success

Sam Edmund mentioned that Cam Bruce was also on our radar for an assistant coaching role

We might need to change our name to the Melbourne Lions 🤣

That outcome would make Nathan Buckley a modern-day Man of La Mancha, a la Kevin Sheedy...

Looks like my first sentence in my reply was right after all.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
