What about Bucks if he wanted to coach?

Was not the best communicator from what I heard. His way or the highway type of fellow. Bit arrogant

As a bit of an asides, one of our few losses in 2021 was to Collingwood, the week after or something Buckley resigned, so we owe them beating them in the last Rd this year for that as well as Gus and everything else. Would be great if all the cards fell right and we knocked them out of finals - a bit of 2017 karma about that as well.

I think a lot, well.. some folk might be buying into the idea we are only NOW canvassing options.

Logically to me you would not move on a coach until you have 'some' idea of who and what is available and when. There would have been arms length enquiries prior to the 'dismissal' ... now they bring things in and ramp up.

You're going to want the nucleus of your Football Honchos sorted by/or immediately after the big dance.

Sure, but that takes longer if you are looking to appoint a senior assistant rather than headhunt someone like Buckley. The process might still be done but I'm not sure they'd put a time frame on it like that, especially if your choice was an assistant at a finals bound team

I know sweet buga all, but I wouldn't mind if Buckley got a chance. The Team isn't done, he isn't done and I like what he says tactically and also his demeanour says he knows how to communicate.

Without doubt its a bit cute time-frame wise. But footy can move quickly..

Going to be interesting.... well, already is .

Longmire's a tricky one because he's a premiership coach but lost four grand finals which is a lot, but made five grand finals which is a lot.

I think horse was able to maximise Sydney’s advantage at the SCG but was exposed in big finals at the MCG. If he were to coach Melbourne I suspect he’d aim to make us unbeatable at the MCG, which you need to be to win premierships.

I think he is a modern Tommy Hafey in that he got an inferior team to perform much better than it should but not well enough for the final hurdle. Sure, Sydney had some excellent players but also some real weaknesses. I think he would do very well with us.

Didn't we sack him?

Could be wrong, but it was my understanding that he’d completed his Level 4 Coaching Program while at the Dees, and then chose to depart in search of a role beyond analysis (which is what he was doing with us and his previous clubs).

We are in transition/rebuild phase. I don't know that going down the untried coach path is what we should be doing to be honest. I know very little about Daly, other than he has been involved in a lot of AFL clubs and never played AFL. He seems like a good bloke, but one suited more to a GM of Football role. If the Club looked worse under his leadership at the beginning of the season next year, he doesnt have the credits in the bank to appease the faithful. Crowds and sponsorship would drop off. The media scrutiny would build. It is a lot on a 'newbie'. He may be great, it's just not the path I'd be going down.

I just feel like Buckley could build a professional culture and command respect instantly. I feel he has a fire inside that yearns for a flag, something that has eluded him, despite other degrees of success. He will be hungrier the 2nd time around.

Fagan never played AFL either. The importance of being a former player is increasingly overstated.

250+ games in the TAFL, is essentially the same.

If we ended up with Longmire as a coach , will we then become a destination club ?

He may be nervous at his 'next' GF. But would the players be? If say 10 from '21 play in this their experiences will probably well and truly nullify Longmires individual...demons

Im not making a case for or against... but i think his time at the Pies was somewhat coloured. The result of a supposedly amicable transition from Malthouse...except Mickey wasn't in reality that enthused about handing over. I think the Buckley of that experience/experiment was a different fella from the Buckley now. Just my thoughts

What year was it that Sam McCLure got a call right?

You'd think Tom Morris or Caro would have a closer ear to the ground.

Watch them get pumped next week and need to beat us to make top 4. We all know how that story goes. But if the roles were reversed...

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
