There's a distinct possibility we will have a new coach signed up by then

I think that that's only the case if it's a coach who's not currently in the AFL system. Otherwise, it has to wait till the end of the finals.

Thought it was something like that, perhaps someone could confirm.

Our season is over on the field, but it's just starting off it. A really massive off season coming up.

You would hope so, but I'm not sure where the trade capital is going to come from on our end. You look at what the likes of May and Lever cost us, but we don't have any of those picks anymore. Free agents perhaps, but apart from that ... ?

Not sure we will necessarily go after big names. You might have a new coach lure some free agents to fill gaps and we can also now trade 2 years worth of picks.

Our list is not in a diabolical state. There’s a lot of natural growth to come from our young players, and you have the opportunity to get Trac and Clarry and Lever and Fritsch back to their best and very quickly rise back up the ladder.

May, Viney and Melksham are the only 3 best 22 players who will likely continue to decline with age next year. I’d add Gawn too but he’s somehow getting better with age. Freak of nature.

Think they changed the rules after that. Iirc a bunch of finals teams got hurt by their assistants being poached that season.

Care factor about Phil Davis ?? SFA !!! 😉

So driving to Casey accasionally in there luxury suv's isn't on, but driving to tullermarine and flying to the other side of the country and back is fine.??? F#$%ing primdona's.

Nathan Buckley's coaching record:

218 games (117-99-2)

John Lomgmire:

332 games (207-122-3)

Simon Goodwin:

203 games (111-91-1)

Michael Voss:

196 games (88-106-2)

Adam Simpson:

243 games (122-119-1)

That was fun!

@Norm Smith's Curse I've always wanted Longmire. Plenty of times we've seen him change things up mid match to totally turn the game in their favour.

Even with their home advantage and all the AFL assistance that is still a mightily impressive record of a Win: Loss ratio

First World problems.

They get paid close to a million bucks. Driving down the Monash every morning, I would do that without blinking if I am paid that much.

Well, sure. But if you got paid the million anyway, and got to drive to Collingwood’s facility instead, you’d take that all things being equal

There was a doco on prime that followed a few afl teams a few years ago. One was the Eagles in 2020. So obviously covid. But my overwhelming memory of it was that I would absolutely hate adam simpson and that I'd hate playing for him. Real 1970s type coach vibes. Huge no from me

Carlton have three games that they better be a good show in or it will put a lot of pressure on the random decision to back Voss in until effectively May 2026…

I think you might be mistaking him for Leon Cameron when he coached GWS.

Looking at Grand Final win / loss results paints a bit of a different picture though.

Buckly 1, 0 - 1

Longmire 5, 1 - 4

Goodwin 1, 1 - 0

Voss 0, 0 - 0

Simpson 2, 1 - 1

Him too. The way the gws coach treated the captain was disgusting. Same doco? I was very impressed with Adelaide's coach.

Get the feeling Longmire has no interest at least not so soon. Simmo would take the call and Buckley seems very keen.

I’d be worried about Buckley unless he has changed his coaching philosophy as it was out of date when he got the sack and it’s absolutely prehistoric now.

Simmo was always ready to try new things so I’d be at least interested in what his ideas would be if he were to take it on.

I think ultimately we need someone who is ahead of the curve and not chasing the latest fad but who knows what the next thing will be.

Flags are very difficult to win.

In the meantime I will settle for finals most years and often contend at PF and GF ala Geelong and Sydney.

Longmire's track record speaks for itself.

He galvanises players and will make the tough calls on standards and culture eg. Didn't select his Captain for the 2024 GF even tho fit. He has gravitas and will not let players rule the roost signs of which have crept into our team in recent times.

As they say in the classics: you need to be in it to win it! Longmire is thereabouts most years. So Longmire for me.

Yep Lurve the thinking!

From memory wet toast were the biggest Covid sooks, even though they had a better run at life than vic teams.

Yep they whinged & wined about it. I can still here Adam Simpson saying they didn't cope with it.

But some nth fans want him back at the club to coach interestingly

So carlton have come out & said Voss will be coach in 2026.

No other club should be looking at a new coach so we have free reign therefore should not stuff this up.

So please don't

We could be in the market for Fly Macrae soon?

He sat N Daicos on the bench for the first 10 minutes of the game whilst hawthorn walked in 2 goals.

He may be overestimating his own tactical genius. Which warms my heart.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
