AFL leadership is so lacking! Not just the current admin! They are so slow to work out that mid-season, State of Origin is an amazing comp that unites every code supporter in the state, not just a single team’s supporters!

Sorry 'Wayne', I'm not on the origin bandwagon.

The ultimate in our game is club football & that's how it should stay.

What are you thinking?

Vic V SA

WA v QLD

NSW v NT?

and who wins, who cares? or is it a comp?

State of Origin was great in the 80/90s but it's has lost its cache.

Id love it to come back only if it was a competitive hit out. If it’s exhibition style ala Freo vs All stars it wont get anywhere.

The AFL have to make a huge rivalry out of it. That is the only way it will succeed.

tony hall doing his knee while being tackled by his hawks' teammate andy collins was the end of state of origin

good yarn here: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/they-were-the-greatest-games-on-earth-so-why-did-state-of-origin-die-20230517-p5d8zk.html

I was at that game. The Surface of the MCG was disgraceful in 1989

I just don't see it happening unless the superstars of the competition demand it. If the likes of Daicos and Bontempelli start making noise, the clubs and media will fall in line pretty quickly.

Otherwise it would just be the AFL forcing their will on the players, and you'll end up with teams full of C graders.

Two conferences... Vic, SA, WA in one, Qld, NSW, Tas in the other. Three games in each conference, leading teams play off.

State of Origin is NRL's biggest...problem.

Why? because (1) it disenfranchises every supporter of NRL who is not from NSW or Queensland and (2) it has turned the NRL Premiership season into a second-tier competition.

NRL is about to establish a team in Perth. How can there be proper engagement with the people of WA when the competition will continue to promote State of Origin between Qld and NSW as its premier event leaving Western Australians to be "second class citizens"?

And relying on State of Origin so much is like Cricket Australia promoting Ashes Cricket and leaving every other form of test cricket withering on the vine.

The AFL Commission would be wise to consider the negatives of NRL's State of Origin as well as the positives. I happen to think the long-term effects of the negative outweigh the positives.

I’m Victorian… I haven’t felt disenfranchised watching State of Origin. There are the Storm players to watch, for a start. I think the same will apply to WA supporters in the near future. I don’t care if the NRL premier comp struggles, I’m an AFL supporter. I’m remembering the great interstate clashes of the past that allowed we MFC supporters to watch Robbie weave his magic for the big V when we were a basket case in our own comp. There will soon be 10 AFL teams who are not going to make the finals in any one year. State of Origin gives those supporters the opportunity to see their stars perform at the highest level.

State of Origin works because the 2 States involved genuinely Hate each other.

It’s Real.

State of Origin can only work between 2 States

The novelty would wear off the first time Victoria had to play anyone other than South Australia.

But if they can pick an All-Australian team that never plays a game they should have 'official' state teams. If nothing else it's a way to recognise all the non-midfielders who will never get a chance to win the Brownlow again.

I couldn't care less about Victoria. I only care about players who represent the red and blue. What does it even achieve? A few hours of entertainment during the season. Then back to the proper AFL season...

The All-Star games in NFL and NBA have become a joke. The NRL is one of the few surviving leagues to have a strong all-star or stage-of-origin game, but they have a consistent legacy and only two states competing, hence a massive rivalry.

there doesn't appear to be any great desire for this.

As a naturalised Victorian, i can't ever see myself cheering on the likes of Dangerfield and Daicos when they play for vic.

I'm a big rap for representative football and would dearly love it back, but it won't happen.

I would prefer this over almost any other ridiculous concept that the AFL comes up with whether it be a pre season cup, wildcard round, AFLX, Round 0 etc.

I firmly believe that you become a better footballer by training and playing with the best footballers, there are countless ex players who have said that the one or two games a year they played in State of Origin was one of the best things that happened for their careers. The fact that this benefit no longer exists for current players I find a bit sad actually.

It's a time to bring footy fans together and support the game in a different light than the tribal club at all costs mentality and maybe just for a moment, shed the money machine image that the AFL is and do something for the grass roots community for a change.

If people are worried about injuries just remember that they added another game to the season at the drop of a hat, for what? I would bin Round 0 and start the season with this in a heartbeat. Injuries are a fact of life in this sport, what difference does it make if one of our players gets injured in a SOO game or one of ours?

Even Gather Round I'd prefer to nick off, if they can gather in the same place then they can do this. The game they did just before COVID hit was incredible, people who enjoy footy but don't want to see the highest quality football are like people who like swimming but don't want to watch the Olympics.

it would definitely never happen again but if it did somehow I would like to see it with these sides with promotion and relegation between the best and worst team in div 1 and 2

div 1

sa, vic metro, vic country, wa

div 2

tas, fnq+nt, qld, nsw+act

it wont ever happen again and if it does it will be the same as the nfl and nba all star games which are just a muck around, as i mentioned in a post yesterday injuries are increasing every single week games need to be lower to 18 games a year with two byes and a rival round or something as the double up game eg:

us vs north

showdown

wa derby

q clash

giants swans

carlton pies

tigers bombers

saints dogs

cats hawks

every game has some kind of history or storyline apart from us and saints dogs i guess

I would actually love a Champions League type tournament every year amongst state leagues.

They could play it over the 3-week bye period - get the top xx teams from each state based on results from the past season, maybe two from SA, WA and VIC and the other spots made up from the other states/territories. Play a knockout-style tournament over those few weeks and crown a winner. Maybe the AFL could even dish out some significant prize money to the winning club.

Personally, I think that would be a heap of fun.

Personally, I don’t really see the attraction to State of Origin footy, in an AFL context. Potentially, it’s because I was pretty young when the last ‘genuine’ SoO game was played in 1999, but I just don’t see the appeal.

I love the NRL product and rivalry, it’s definitely something to behold, but in my limited exposure to it, it’s just never really translated my interest in terms of the AFL product.

If it’s back, it’s back. I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a bugbear of mine, but it doesn’t hold any romance or drive any childhood nostalgia or affinity.

This is how I'd do it.

Move the pre finals bye to before grand final (this should happen anyway ffs)

Use the pre grand final bye weekend to have state of origin with players from the other 16 clubs.

Rank the states and then have them play

1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8

So might be, victoria v SA, wa v qld, tassie v nsw, nt vs act, For example. Higher ranked club hosts.

Then, if you win your game you get to play in the "higher" game the next year. Or host. So if SA beat Victoria in the above scenario, they'd host the winner of WA v qld the next year in the 1v2 game. Victoria would get bumped to 3rd but would host the winner of tassie v nsw in the 3v4 game. For example. So it would be a continuous competition over the years.

I hope that's made sense haha

Have a trophy for being the #1 state. 4 games to watch (broadcast). 90% of the comp available. Spice on the matches cos they mean something. No big consequences for most injuries as end of season. Actually get to represent your state, not the allies.

Just an idea.

I'm not devastated if it doesn't happen but it would be nice to have some kind of representative footy to change things up a bit, even if every 2 or 4 years. I just think it's an experience lost for the players more than anything.

Things are quite different to 25 years ago, academies in NSW and QLD, a Tassie team coming in and the old guard of VIC, SA and WA. Yes it's not perfect but much more widespread talent than it once was.

Well aware that I'm in the minority on this. Not pining for the past, more of an opportunity to create something new.

Haven't we established that it doesn't work in the AFL?

It did. It just doesn't anymore.

The two ingredients you need is fervent support from players and fans. This doesn't exist.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
