Last I read was in December, Shand would work at mfc to help implement the FD Review and mentor in leadership for on and off field FD leaders.

Re Ben Crowe. He worked with FD at Bright last year but now ...?

But who is the internal project ‘Champion’ of the Review now that Pert is gone? It isn’t Green’s (or the Board’s) job to implement change.  An Interim CEO doesn’t usual have a remit for that in a substantive way.

The GM, FD and Coach wouldn't have a great incentive to implement changes/take advice from outsiders.

My concern is that without an internal 'Champion' to drive change, inertia has set in and (the old) status quo prevails.

I had high hopes of their involvement to fixbut sadly I see little improvement for the work Shand and Crowe did and imv we have gone backwards in FD leadership (Shand's remit) and mind set and mindfulness Corwe's remit).

Did MFC terminate their involvement or have they quietly 'left the building' for lack of support?

Shand lit the candles and Crowe led the Zen chants

  • Lucifers Hero changed the title to Have Shand and Crowe 'left the building'?

I saw one of them (not sure which one?) on the bench during the Geelong game on Friday night.

If they are still both involved with the Melbourne Football Club they should definitely both be earning their money this week. Lots of serious and honest conversations need to be happening.

Crowe preaches the Love mantra. It is deficient in the sports team performance. Let’s cut the Love. Bring back the Respect and Hard work ethos. Winning breeds Fun. Enjoy the winning is the goal.

Im sure the whole team had plenty of input into the theme framing. Its a double edged sword. When it works, its ground-breaking, creative and insightful. When it doesn't it can see as well, what we are.

Nobody ever asks for help from the anthropologists. We spend so much time picking apart the dysfunctions of gurus and self-promoters that it is practically impossible for us to get momentum for a public relations campaign. Our leading slogan would be something like "Let us explain why you probably shouldn't trust us".

But, in all seriousness, be prepared to fear the first club which gives a quiet anthropologist a cupboard under the stairs to live in, a notebook, and a daily ration of bread and coffee.

"Uh, guys, so, um, yeah, so, like, here's a little list of a bunch of things that you're doing entirely as status-affirming rituals which just suck up time and energy for a zero-sum result, and here's a list of things you could be doing instead which are specific to achieving your actual purpose as an organisation in harmony with each individual's sense of self."

In 2021 the big theme was "reset" - you would often be able to see players saying the word to each other on the field. Seemed to work pretty well, but I never really saw it in 2022 or beyond.

I think people are overreacting on the whole "Love" theme. Goodwin probably leaned into it too much publicly, not surprising given the guy's lack of nuance and substance when speaking with the media. Some comms training there was needed. But the "love" component I always interpreted as being to "love" what you do and by default to do that, you need to appreciate and understand the purpose and roles of those around it. It is a holistic approach. It does take time, clearly it was identified that a lot of the energy and communication amongst the team was lacking. I also doubt that the KPI for these guys was "wins". Probably more so how players are actually responding to these themes individually. Those in the corporate world would know of this as "engagement" ratings. There is a clear correlation between engagement and performance. If you're not engaged positively with your environment then you're not going to perform and certainly not excel. I imagine quite a few in the playing group didn't hold the club in positive light after the Oliver and Petracca fiascos. And clearly Pert and Roffey leaving was a symptom of poor player engagement in the club.

There is a lot still do it. You just know that Goodwin's "Don't panic but be urgent" comment in the press conference came from a playbook from these guys.

The wall in the video when Trac announced Langford as the rising stat read, "True. Make people proud to belong. Trust,Respect, unity, excellence".

Fair to say we have work to do. None of those words describe us atm.

Other than 'FFS kick the thing', I'm all for an ethos of sacrificing self for team on the field. Watching GWS and Hawthorn (as much as I despise them) will show even the most casual observer that they work as one. Numbers to the ball, numbers at stoppage and spread. The game is changing and we appear to be a step behind. Or three.

And perhaps a bit of this

I get the intent of the "......" statement.

It looks the result of a workshop where the management consultant asked "what do we want to stand for and value" who then dutifully writes it on the whiteboard....

It is borderline acceptable in a Strategic Plan but too complex as a motivational mantra if that is the intention.

Something simple and inspirational is best to motivate.

Can we just get the team to play footy without all this bs there are normal problems not being addressed and all the consultants won't help. The problem is the team has zero leadership and standards on field and off

Save us from this mumbo jumbo and start playing hard accountable footy

It is not rocket science shows how poor the leadership is at board level

They are too scared to act

We are becoming a joke in my view

I'm with you on not needing the mumbo jumbo and consultant speak.

However, I do believe a simple two or three word mantra can be very powerful. eg sometime around the changeover of Roos to Goodwin when selflessness/teamwork was required the motto was 'Esprit de corps'.

Win the game

I was saying it in February and getting criticism. We simply don’t have the forward line talent to kick a winning score. It’s primarily a lack of skill.

No one said they did.

This thread isn't intended to rehash the reasons for our poor performance. There are more than enough threads on that already.

Their job was to implement the FD Review recommendations and this thread is about their current involvement if any. If not, the FD review may never be fully implemented.

I would say, that if Crowe is still involved he has a role in player motivation (ie effort and desire).

TRUE is the statement of our club’s values. It’s not a football department motivational piece.

All clubs have value statements or similar corporate-style speak pieces like this.

Option 1: Have numbers to the ball, numbers at the stoppage. This results in the opposition have a spare on the outside or behind play.

Option 2: Only have one player at the ball, leaving players on the outside to receive. Have the same number as the opposition at the stoppage so as to ensure the opposition doesn't have a spare behind play.

The correct option is the one that wins the game. The only problem is, it's not until after the game you can tell which option worked on the day.

I totally get what value statements are and their role. I've written more than enough for a variety of organisations in my working life.

Re my post:

  • I acknowledged it as a Value statement albeit, imv, not a very good one and belongs in a Strategic Plan (my words)/Corporate Piece (your words).

  • imv it failed as a motivational statement/motto/mantra if that is the intention.

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.

Just a game and percentage outside the Top 8, the Demons return to Melbourne to face the Sydney Swans at the MCG, with a golden opportunity to build on the momentum from toppling the reigning premiers on their own turf. Who comes in, and who makes way?
