Harry Sharp is a step in the right direction.

We are in a rebuild and he fits our demographic.

It’s all about the next opportunity now. Replenishing our list. We have made a lot of trade blunders, that were forgotten about when we won a flag. That’s why we only won the one. Now back to the well, and hopefully, we learnt something.

Sharp is just the new Daniel Nicholson.

Goodwin developed our entire premiership team and you’re upset he can’t make anything out of a bunch of guys who aren’t good?

There’s a separate conversation about JJ and Bedford and lack of turnover of the team in 2022/2023. Mistakes made then that we are paying for now.

Anyone who watched JJ and Toby at their first year at Casey wouldn’t be questioning the coaches ability to develop players. Those 2 were absolutely nowhere near AFL at the beginning of their careers.

If he is such a good developer of players Which players other than first year players have improved in the past 27 games or so?

It’s very hard to improve players as a team goes backwards and from our players drafted 2020-2023 it’s not a long list.

McVee is a great player development story. Bowser is starting to turn the corner after some 2nd/3rd year blues and injuries. I’m still confident there’s a player in Disco, he’s not far from putting it together. And AMW had come a long way before injury.

Howes and Laurie appear to be rare JT misses. The problems in their game don’t seem to be fixable.

We’ll know more by the end of the year about Jeffo and Adams but they’ve both come from bog ordinary when they started at Casey to at a minimum good VFL players.

The only talented player who’s really flat lining in terms of development is JVR.

Looking back now, how much do we need ANB, Harmes and Bedford right now.

I blame the Houstin backflip on Trac

We need Tall KPP not 193cm but 205cm

We only have 3 players over 200cm, Fullarton (200cm), Campbell (201cm) and Gawn (209cm)

GCU currently have 6 players 200cm+ so hopefully Kalani sees more progression with us, but we need another giant in the short-term too.

James Hird makes a good point about the training being in 2 locations. But that's why we desperately need the Caulfield Home Base to come to fruition.

We certainly need another experienced key forward that is around 200cms.

Losing Ben Brown due to his knee issues was a blow. But the roll of the dice to get him helped us win a Premiership, so that was definitely worth it.

We tried for both Tom Hawkins (was too old and never going to leave Geelong) and Tom Lynch (who wanted to stay at Richmond).

Unfortunately, at the end of 2024, there were slim pickings besides possibly Matthew Taberner from Fremantle.

I think Tom Fullerton is worth a shot. Especially after kicking 5 goals against Geelong in the VFL. But we shall wait and see....

You answered my question, thanks. McVee is a good story but no one else of any consequence has improved except TMac, possibly Chandler and up to this year RIvers

Thats lamentable

Backwards I would say Salem, Sparrow, Viney, Lever, May, Fritsch, Petty

No mans land - Woewodin, Brown, Sestan, Fullarton, Verrall, Adams, McAdam, Laurie, Billings, Howes, Kentfield

Thanks lads... between you you both highlight a very big problem at Melbourne.

Who is actually in charge of development ?

Get rid of him

Looked at the two sides tonight.

Can anyone point out since our flag in 2021 a Rankine, Dawson, Keays, Cumming, Keane, Peatling, Cameron, Smith, Stengle, Danger or Henry etc we have recruited from other teams.

I will add Nibbler as he has set up 5 goals in the first half.

That seems to be a big issue for us, as Sharp is the only one I can see in our side from another club post 2021 and once again he is not the quality of the players named above and they are only two of our opposition clubs.

Probably Grundy and that's it, that is the list.

We should have by now done something to bring someone like Fogarty or Walker at the bear minimum.

crom ain't even made finals with a rankine dawson, keays, cumming, keane, peatling as yet (but they surely will)

danger, cameron, and smith were the hallmark recruits of the puddy tatts' 2022 flag, while smith looks like being part of their finals team if they make it this year

what, drafted them? that's jvr / el jefe and turner - a first rounder and a speculative pick (although i think walker was actually an academy selection?)

i love that there seems to be this belief that bringing together a premiership side, and then after a premiership, is so easy

we tried for tex, we tried for lynch - both said no

it ain't for want of trying to bring in class

But why are these type of players saying NO everytime? Surely it should be appealing to play KPF for a potential premiership side.

Would it be any different if we had Caulfield? If a player is 50/50 on us and another Melbourne club, does Casey Fields turn some players off a bit?

I don’t know if it does or not, just curious.

Would it matter too much for someone like Lynch for example? He's already based in Melbourne.

Walker, who knows.

Bloody oath it would

Well that’s the question, why are players saying no to us?

I’m surprised to see so little mention of our facilities - or lack thereof - in this thread.

From the standpoint of basic working conditions, we are probably the least desirable Victorian club for any potential non-draft recruit. I’m convinced our list would look very, very different if we’d had one permanent city-based facility for the past 16 years.

Win a premiership… in the window 2022 and 2023. Instead of being a destination club, we continue to lose players and go backwards in terms of recruiting any quality players from other clubs. Forget the salary cap excuse. Thats BS. Other clubs have done it consistently better than us in the last 3 years.

Well that would have to be the responsibility of the Board. In that regard they have failed for quite a period.

PS: I am hopeful of a positive Caulfield Training Base announcement soon.

Indeed it is on the board. And the board’s historic failures have been playing out on the field for over a decade now.

Yep, the salary cap is a cop out. Just look at the Collingwoods and Carltons of the world.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
