Did Guerra warn us in his email... Just reread this and found it very interesting. I think watch this space. Nothing is official until it is official.

After being formally told of the Tassy concession there would have been a BOD meeting - likely hook up. This decision would have been BOD approved.

Likely the feeling is now is the time to load up big rather than wait 5 or more years.

We also need to play some of the youngsters in the VFL. eg Adams, maybe its time for Laurie to step up, Jeffo and maybe Kentfield.

AMW and Howes will get a chance to become regulars.

Maybe we get lucky with this years draft if we get a good harvest of draft picks.

So King effectively told him that he’s not playing to the level, that he has to earn his place in the team and instead of taking it as a challenge to get better, he cracked the sads and went straight to the media to throw us under the bus.

Got it.

Shocking attitude, he can go.

Put to one side whether you think moving on from Clarry is a good idea.

Is this the right way to do it? Tell him 2 business days prior to trade period to find a new home? Let it leak? Destroy bargaining power? All the while remembering that he’s under a sizeable contract that can’t be ripped up - meaning the only outcome now is for us to trade him for a packet of chips whilst we pay him 30-50% of his salary?

Be supportive of the new management all you want, but we are still, right now a mess.

Anyone else concerned that we were told we wouldn't need a full rebuild and we'd be expecting a bounce next year - only to be delivered a cleanout?

I'm not surprised one bit, I tipped this. The (ex-Geelong) new coach will come in and force Clarry to the Cats for a 2nd rounder. None of this is what we've been sold.

Stinks of that right now. Help Clarry down the highway and get stuff all in return.

While the Clarry decision has come ‘out of the blue’, now that it has started to sink in, I understand it.

Setting standards and expectations early is critical for any new regime.

I wonder if all parties walked in in good faith and the new coach says this is how it’s going to be and Oliver lost it and it went off piste from there

That was my thoughts too. New coach laid down a challenge and instead of wanting to prove him wrong he's cracked the sads. Not saying this is what I necessarily think has happened but the thought crossed my mind.

I agree, especially if he did react the way it is being reported. That doesn't show the kind of team culture we need. I teach a 10 year old boy who loves footy but also responds with anger and frustration if things don't go his way. I totally see how this kind of personality as a grown adult would be unacceptable.

While I was 100% behind the club supporting Oliver through his issues, I’m now 100% behind the club making the players accountable for their own actions. The club comes first, and the attitudes from both Petracca and Oliver (in this instance and all prior) suggest it’s them first, then the club.

He can’t play midfield anymore as he simply lets opposition walk the ball out the front of the square. Tough call, but having seen our midfield obliterated by GC and North this year, change is needed.

It’s no coincidence that the games between round 2-5 including those 2 that our midfield got beat up were the games in which Oliver (and Viney) had their least midfield minutes. We tried moving it up without them and Rivers, Sparrow etc weren’t up to it. Oliver and Viney are consistently our best pressure act and tackling players. Daylight to next best. Oliver is also one of the best intercept midfielders going around even when not at his best. The ‘one dimensional’ tag is a media narrative and if King thinks Oliver can’t be guaranteed a best 23 spot then the bigger issue is he either doesn’t have a great understanding of the game and/or our list.

I could only understand the Petracca situation if it hadn’t been driven by the club and if we get something significant back for him. The Oliver situation is hard to comprehend for someone supposedly committed to the club, running back into form and on a contract that prevents getting fair value especially in a reported weak draft year.

Highlights poor list mgt as long contracts bite you on the bum! Plus the AFl & PA have to agree on max contract terms eg 4 yrs. Without knowing all the facts if Oliver has been asked to change his role so be it as he’s form dosent warrant it, remember selfless not selfish all about team

Blow the place up Kingy and reset again.

So either King wasn't honest about Oliver in his plans or they've completely botched it. Either way, this now seems untenable but also how are we meant to even get another team to bite even paying 700k a year?

Why not tell Clarry's manager to go drum up interest and we'll entertain anything they come back with. This seems like going the nuclear option after 2 years of failing the nuclear option.

If Trac and Clarry are gone, I really hope on the other side of it is a new era where all this can come to an end. The media gossip, the leaks, players supposedly on the way out and then back in again - all the dirty laundry, every season.

It's gotta go. Has to be a line in the sand this time.

Our opening bounce set up for the first game next season is going to look markedly different from this year’s, bearing in mind that JV certainly isn’t a walk up start either, based on last year’s output

I work in a field which is constantly reported on in media circles and although reporting sometimes lacks nuance, or some matters pertaining to specificity, the overwhelming bulk of reporting is extremely accurate in relation to broad facts, figures and geographic insights.

And do you work in the AFL industry? Because if not, how your industry is reported is completed irrelevant to how a tribal, emotional sport like AFL is reported on. They know what gets clicks.

To keep toying and embarrassing him like that is a pathetic way to handle a champion player.

WAS a champion player

This has been the master plan all along:

1. Worpel to Jeelong,

2. Clarry to Jeelong in exchange for Worpel,

3. We build our next generation around Worpel.

I can see a few teams (Bombers, Cats, Crows) come to mind if we are willing to pay a large chunk of his contract.

Congrats to King for having the courage to see this before moving in his own furniture.

What if King just realises that we cant keep fielding the relics of the 2021 team and hope somehow it will just turn back into 2021?

I just hope they have something significant planned that results in a good transitioning rebound game that doesnt spook any of the younger brigade into also exploring their options...

I worry Melbourne are doing that thing where you advertise a garage sale on a Saturday morning and people start ringing on Thursday with sob stories about why they cant make Saturday, so you let them come early and they then low ball everything and you take it because you worry it wont sell, then on Saturday realise you could have got way more...

Playing group and former coach have a lot of blame for the current situation.

The club wanted to keep this premiership core together but they have underperformed.

Certainly must have some truth to it. I am just concerned a. who we're going to play b. how we will attract serious talent and c. avoid another decade in the doldrums.

Why a say 'mess'. If King merely said that like everyone he has to earn their place and fit into changed game plans, and a player overreacts, then the blame is on the player, not the club. But as usual we are just guessing and those who like reaching for the razor blades can have a good time.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #5 Christian Petracca

The superstar Demon midfielder made a successful return to the fold after his devastating injury last year and the subsequent fallout from the treatment he received, during which time he sought to depart the club. Petracca's professionalism and strong play, both in the midfield and up forward, were outstanding and resulted in him being runner-up in the club's best and fairest count. However, early this week, the club's new CEO, Paul Guerra, confirmed that the under-contract Petracca has again requested a trade, adding that he would only be allowed to leave for a “quality offer that turns our head". No doubt some Demon heads are already spinning.
