No, I don’t use the name “Mel Bourne” on any site except this one. What is my namesake doing to besmirch my reputation?

Not sure what’s worse. The rent-a-mouths in the media or the people that constantly lose their minds over what they say.

As for the quality of Lloyd's comments - I'll never know what I really think of him because I just get annoyed at the sight of him. Reminds me of the now ancient movie 'Dave', here the president meets his double and tells him "You're a very handsome man, but wipe that grin off your face. You look like a schmuck."

collapse in depth or effort...or both?

Matthew Lloyd (IQ 56) … remember he who promotes underage drinking by his school sports team

He is a grub like Barrett and Morris and McClure except he at least played the game

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd believes the Demons have failed to back up their talk of "love" for their teammates and the club from the pre-season with poor performances on the footy field.

With a horror 0-3 start to the season, the Demons look like a shadow of the club's 2021 premiership powerhouse.

The club's off-field culture has taken a serious beating in recent years with a spate of off-field issues creating what some believe to be a hostile environment.

who did lloyd play for?

who do we play next game?

of course he'd drop fritsch

Seems strange for the calls to drop Fritsch to be intensifying when he actually turned in a respectable game on the weekend. Unfortunate that he missed his shots because other than that he clocked 17 disposals, a couple of goal assists, three contested marks and third highest in the team for metres gained. Even managed a bit of chasing and corralling.

He's had a dog of a start to the season but he did at least show some genuine involvement - enough to argue that the worm is turning.

Collapse in depth of effort, perhaps?

Roost... people get banned for lesser insults than that.

To be safe from further such moments, I'll adjust to the Full Metal Jacket version of "wipe that [censored] grin off your face, Pyle/Lloyd."

The eminently sensible Phil Davis

Thoughts on the Christian Petracca and his emotional reaction after the Dees loss.

Davis says

  • It’s a non event … move on

  • the constant media show pick up this and running different agendas on what Trac is thinking and what it means without really knowing and thinking the worst

  • Trac clearly wants the club to be better

  • Footy is an emotional game so what’s the issue. He’s clearly disappointed

Davis says the most important things is for Gawn and Dees teammates is to check on Trac and ask “ Are you ok”.

Davis is an intelligent commentator who thinks then talks and has interesting non sensationalist insights. 👏👏👏👏😊

I haven’t listened to the media much this season for obvious reasons. But when I do I just pick up on the most bizarre commentary. Probably reading too much into it but it does reenforce this anti Melbourne rhetoric / vibe we all talk about.

2 examples

  1. Jon Ralph on the mid week tackle when the cast is talking about Houston’s failed trade to MFC, he moves his hand across his brow and says ‘phew’. I mean the guy is a Tigers supporter - yea we all no Houston dodged a bullet but we don’t need the saltiness. What does he care anyway??

  2. Sam Edmund on SeN drive home today when taking about top 4 coaches or teams and the discussion was on how Brissy started the year by saying winning but not convincingly. A casual remark was made about Melbourne and how its start to ‘22 after the premiership was 10-0 but not convincing then how it all fell apart. True it did, but what about Pies or Geelong after their premiership year? They were completely hopeless and missed finals!!!! WTF!!!

End rant. Good night.

It's a light column with a bit of fun and actually spot on. 6 months and we don't have a new CEO and we do have plenty of problems.

What do you think we should be doing differently Redleg, apart from the bleeding obvious winning games. What is happening behind the scenes??

[censored] the media preaching Bailey Smith for sticking up his fingers.

Just about any other club and he’s thrown to the wolves.

Phil Davis is an outrageously good communicator in general. Whatever issue he weighs in on, he cuts through all the noise and distills it down to a simple and clear conclusion.

I have no idea what his tactical abilities are like, but I’m certain that if he got involved in some capacity with a group of players, they would run through brick walls for him.

Kane Cornes described the Dees as “UNWATCHABLE”.

Have to agree.

Scoring is the key and it’s been a problem for the Dees for 3 years !!!

It’s so frustrating to watch us and get angry, sad, disappointed, frustrated, angry , sad, disappointed, frustrated … and despondent. We had 5 minutes of Hope which was quickly killed and incinerated in the last qtr.

Demonland, PLEASE take this back to the 2021 format! 🙂

FFS, we’re being well served by an experienced operator who is our acting CEO. It’s not uncommon to take a lengthy period of time to find a new CEO. It only looks bad because we are unexpectedly poor on the field.

This is becoming a pile on from these lesser journalists, if you'd even call them that. Can they pull up Richmond's attendances this year? We are not in limbo. We have a well organised transition in place from Brad Green to Steve Smith and our finalising our search for a CEO. We are as close to a home base as we have been for 50 years. Yes our football is terrible atm but our list is in pretty good shape, Trac has just committed to the club and we may even keep Kozz. Our biggest weakness for mine is our coaching department and I'll guess we see substantial change on that front this year. The Dee's remain a strong BUY for mine.

What about Libby Birch’s comments on Real Footy podcast( quoted in today’s Age). She blames the men’s’ 2022 team for derailing their quest for successive premierships.

They should have been inspired by the 2022 performance of the mens’ team.Finished top 4 , and very unlucky not to win both their finals. Same in 2023. They didn’t fail to make the finals after their premiership( unlike Geelong and Collingwood).

I suspect she might be a “disgruntled ex-employee”. Her form certainly tailed off before she left the Dees.

I find Libby Birch's comments very interesting. But I doubt she would have much glimpse of what exactly was going on in the men's league, given they are largely separate. I think she's right to call out Gary Pert for all the attention the men's team got - the women's team were exceptional and didn't get half as much attention.

A very real reality (lol) is AFLW for all its good points etc just hasn't got the following, hence clout of mainstream footy.

It's obviously fantastic for those playing and the opportunities it provides to aspiring participants.

It will always be overshadowed by AFL..

Great that the lasses dis so well. Maybe Libby ought to focus on that and not the "we were hard done by" .. smacks of sour grapes tbh.

Bigger fish to fry imo

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
