And you can add Benny Brown to that list- and probably McAdams too given how few games he was available for.

Four (5 if you count McAdam) seasoned, hardened AFL players with mutiple preseasons under the belt not available for a season. Very hard to cover.

Maybe not in those specific words but my reading of this section is that it is an admission that attempting to recreate what worked in the past is and was a mistake.

1) He holds players to contracts publicly and privately. Kozzie wont be going anywhere if under contract. We just wont fold on that. 

2) He is our Premiership coach.

Playing Spargs in Round1 was one of the poorer match Committee decisions to match some of the Sub decisions of 2023. 

He was not match fit at best and not fully recovered from injury at worst. Self inflicted injury to match the Practice Match one of the year before of Joel Smith. 

Even now we don’t have any real timeline for Spargs and the longer he is out the nearer he is going to be struggling to recover and rescue his career.

Brutal layman’s assessment but we have seen things like this in footy that are real and the slower they go the more predictable they become. Footy does not wait long for  the player with prolonged injury. I hope not in this case. 
Charlie has been nothing but a team man since 2018 and hopefully can overcome this set back and once again play AFL

The mistake was that by reverting to the previous game plan he confused the players.

As I read it, his comments on game plan were more that it lacked consistency in application (coaches fault after they blinked mid-year).

 

In horse racing you can never ask a horse to ‘go’ twice in the same race. If you ask it to go and then slow it down again, high chance it ain’t going to respond the next time you ask it to go fast. 

 

Dees have seemed similarly inflexible to me… not sure if all other clubs are the same but we haven’t liked change on the fly (perhaps that’s why he talked about ‘practising exploring different ways’ this pre-season).

I'm not entirely sure if this is true.

There has been a long list of players that have previously left the club still under contract.

I can tell you for a fact that playing Spargo didn’t make his injury any worse. He had a chronic Achilles issue that required surgery. Charlie wanted to avoid surgery and believed his was right to play. He’s now had surgery and is progressing well in his recovery.

Let’s just say that he’d decided to stick to the more attacking gameplan which he candidly admits would likely have been the best option. We’d just been absolutely flogged by Freo, then the next week lost Petracca. 2 things that would unsettle the best of coaches. He didn’t want to see us get opened up like that again and we switched back to an our trusted form. In the end we missed finals by a couple of wins after taking some very close losses to finalists in the last weeks of the season. 
He’s admitted fault but one thing I take you up on is this idea that our contest and defence gameplan is out of date. We built that plan around a defence with a fully  fit May, Lever and Salem, we had none of those things for most of last year. We also had Spargo, Brayshaw and Ben Brown, 3 more players we missed. We also had a fit Oliver and Petracca for the whole season. There’s not a game plan on the planet that would sustain those losses and on top of that if you added those players back to our squad fully fit we would go very close to a flag playing our contest and defence game plan. It was never the game plan it was our personnel, we didn’t have the team nor the fitness to threaten last year. On top of this the club has since drafted to improve our ability to adapt our game plan. So what exactly are we beating on Goodwin for? I say that as someone who holds reservations about some of his decisions but seriously?

He specifically said going backwards prevented us from evolving or growing. And has flagged that has been a big focus for us this off-season.

I would find his words highly disingenuous if we end up going back to our slow, defensive predictable gameplan.

I think our 21-23 gameplan is extremely out of date and the fact the past three flags have been won by teams that emphasise attack and fast ball movement exemplifies that.

I also think that the changes we made in the early part of last year felt pretty half-baked and we never truly committed to a new style, which was why it was so easy for the coaches to blink.
