Bone stress seems to be pretty common in younger players. I assume for a lot of them their bodies aren’t fully ready for the increased training loads etc.

And I reckon a factor would be how much the game is based on running now - every player has to cover 10+ kms per game in footy now - a fair bit of it at a good clip

I'd be guessing 10 years ago only half the team would clock up those sort of distances.

To cover that sort of territory they must also have to do heaps more running in preseason than say even five years ago.

Where on his body is the "bone stress"? I couldn't see that. There can be stress fractures to many different parts of the body - back, legs, feet etc.

Last time I reported some bone stress I had a kid nine months later.

I need more updates on GW’s nail! Is it a just a chip or a complete loss? How long until full recovery?? Will it hinder her efforts at training? I thought the clubs media game was on the improve but the lack of reports coming out about this are worrying

Selwyn is preparing a report as we speak. At this stage I’m on Nail Protocols.

That’s the company line - I hear it’s really a serious mental health issue, unfortunately. Get well soonest @Ghostwriter

MELBOURNE’S Judd McVee will undergo scans on his right hamstring after leaving the training track early on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old was assisted from Gosch’s Paddock midway through the Demons’ session, with GM of AFL Performance Alan Richardson providing an update.

“Judd will have a scan on his hamstring this afternoon, which will give us the full picture,” Richardson said.

“Fingers crossed it’s not significant, but we will know more shortly.”

Meanwhile, Jack Viney will be on a modified training program this week due to injury to his rib.

The midfielder, who was absent from the session with a personal commitment, sustained damage to rib cartilage late last week and has subsequently entered the rehab group.

The injury is expected to sideline him for Melbourne’s match simulation on Friday at Casey Fields.

“Jack copped a knock to his ribs in a tackle last Friday, with scans showing some damage to his rib cartilage,” Richardson said.

“We allowed it to settle over the weekend and pleasingly, he is recovering well.

“Jack will continue to work through his rehab over the coming sessions, which will give us a greater understanding of his availability for our upcoming practice matches.”

Youngster Caleb Windsor has also been forced to the sidelines with a skin infection on his foot.

The 19-year-old has been managing symptoms of late, with the Demons confident it is now under control.

“It’s been frustrating for Caleb, as it has taken a couple of days to get on top of the infection. We’re confident with where it’s at now though,” Richardson said.

“At this stage, we expect Caleb to re-join the main training group by the middle of next week.”

Christian Salem and Jake Bowey were also absent from Wednesday’s session due to illness.

Melbourne will welcome fans to Casey Fields this Friday, for the first Beyond Bank Family Series event of 2025.

The open training session will begin at 3pm, with a player signing opportunity from 6pm.

We've had quite a few players this year and last year with infections... maybe worth keeping some betadine in the change room and reminding the boys about the value of a soapy shower!

why do AFL players often get infections? I have wondered this for a while. I cant think of any of my mates that have had skin infections to the extent that AFL players get. Seems to be an odd one as they are super fit and would be good healers.

Do your mates often sweat profusely for 30 hours a week and share showers and change rooms with 43 other similarly sweaty men?

and are they men aged between 18 and 35 who are mollycoddled their entire existence, treated like precious petals and put on pedestals?

A bit of guesswork here but from out of the carnage, the injury list with a month to go looks a bit like this:-

Jake Bowey (ill) —TBC
Kade Chandler (AC joint) — expected to start integrating into contact soon.
Tom Fullarton (hamstring) — continues to work through his recovery.
Luker Kentfield (pneumonia) — hospitalised in Perth over Christmas break and slowly recovering there. Expected back at the club soon.
Judd McVee (foot) (hamstring) — TBC
Jake Melksham (hamstring) — will miss the next block of pre-season training.
Christian Petracca (ribs) — expected to restart full training at the club soon.
Christian Salem (ill) — TBC
Charlie Spargo (Achilles) — making slow progress in his recovery.
Koltyn Tholstrup (bone stress) —  expected to be sidelined for the next 8 to 10 weeks.
Jack Viney (rib cartilage) — TBC
Caleb Windsor (skin infection on his foot) —1 week

Boot rubs on foot, skin blisters, more hot sweaty running….infection

Somewhat predictably, no they are not.

And for over a month?

I know of a bunch of folks who got it in the 2nd half of last year. 3 were coworkers in their 20s, 2 were students at our school plus a few family members.

Knew directly 7 people who were otherwise young and healthy who got it in the space of about 4 months. Previously I'd only ever known elderly or very ill people to get it. Must have been something getting about causing it

Chandler and Fullarton both participated fully today, so you may remove them from this list.

Almost like there was some sort of disease in recent years that weakens the immune system and damages organs like lungs, thus causing susceptibility to other diseases 🥲

What's the recovery period?
