“Nathan is a standout person and coach”

So much so we didn’t offer him the job.

It's a pretty unique situation where after the coach has been picked half the questions are about someone who didn't get the job. Think he's handled that awkwardness pretty well.

So, please tell us what he should have said to that annoyingly stupid question?

During King’s presser he was asked about Buckley again (obsessed much?!), and said this isn’t Buckley it’s about King. Well handled.

Jaded I think he is handling himself fine for the most part and answering some rubbish questions from some rubbish media people. I am just not going wow we have a great CEO because they can answer some questions. I think he could have stopped at standout person and said he will be a very good coach for another club.

Fair enough.

I think Buckley is a great person, but note he said standout person not standout coach 😂

He handled some of Kane’s utter garbage very well today I thought.

And yes presenting well in the media is bare minimum for a good CEO. I’m more impressed that we chose King with 0 leaks. That’s good work from him in a short space of time.

Maybe Paul's actually been quoting Buckley this whole time. It's much funnier when you think about NB talking in the third person during his presentations.

"Nathan Buckely is a standout coach"

"Tasmania would be very lucky to have Nathan as coach"

"Hopefully, in a couple of days time, Nathan will be announced as coach of the Tasmanian Devils"

Geez he was having none of it was he?

I love that he confirmed Steven King won the job and Buckley didn’t.

Guerra in exceptional at navigating sticky questions is what l learnt from that interview and managing the narrative

I'll tell you another thing that I liked about Paul Guerra, Brad Green and Steven Smith's decision on our new coach after I pose a question.

If the same scenario had presented to previous boards past that Buckley needed until Tuesday next week to make a decision on his future what do you think they would have done and said?

They would have folded if he was in the running but he wasn't.

MELBOURNE Demons CEO Paul Guerra has written to club members

It’s a great privilege to be writing to you for the first time as the CEO of the Melbourne Football Club. It’s an honour and I’m incredibly excited to be entering this next chapter, together.

It’s been a few weeks since I officially started – trust me when I say I had been eager to get my feet under the desk for some time – and I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome. I have been fortunate enough to meet many of our members and supporters at various events and matches, sharing ideas, stories and traditions.

As a club, we will aspire to be the best, driving high performance both on and off the field. Our President Brad Green and the Board have done a terrific job in setting the foundations for the next phase of our journey, and I am excited to work with Brad, and in turn Steven Smith, and the Board to build on that momentum.

Earlier this month, we proudly made the announcement that Steven King will be our new AFL Senior Coach. Steven was extremely impressive in his presentation to the selection panel, and we were unanimous in the belief that he is the right person to take us forward. Steven will officially commence with the club this week, following Geelong’s grand final appearance over the weekend. We are delighted to welcome him, his wife Danielle and their children to the Melbourne Football Club.

As we reach the end of the AFL season, I want to take a moment to thank all our partners who have been with us for the 2025 campaign. Their support plays a vital role in everything we do, and just as importantly, helping our players to perform at their best on the field.

Hertz, who have been part of our family for decades, will continue their sponsorship with the club in a different capacity in 2026. This does create an opportunity for a new Co-Principal Partner to feature on our men’s guernsey and excitingly, we are already in conversations with a number of prospective partners. We look forward to sharing more news with you in due course.

With the final siren sounding on the season, we know attention quickly turns to the AFL Trade and Free Agency period. There will be plenty of speculation over the next few weeks, and I would like to acknowledge that this can be unsettling for many of our members. While much will be spoken about, I implore you to keep tabs on our official club channels, being our website and social media, for accurate information. We will endeavour to share any updates in a timely fashion.

No doubt many of you would have heard Christian Petracca’s name mentioned in recent days.

As a footy club we couldn’t be more excited and confident in where our AFL program is headed. We know our future success will be built on people and players who are fully committed to where we are heading.

We met with Christian late last week where he expressed his desire to explore a fresh start in 2026.

Christian is contracted for a further four years and is a once in a generation player. With this in mind, any decision regarding Christian’s future will be made in the best interest of the Melbourne Football Club.

In terms of our overarching strategy for this period, our focus is simple; we will explore every opportunity to strengthen our list. Our job is to ensure our list is the best it can be and that ultimately Melbourne Football Club is competing in September. To give you more insight, please click here to view a member-first interview with our AFL List Manager Tim Lamb, which seeks to provide a preview of what to expect in the weeks ahead.

On field, it’s been a strong start to the season for our AFLW team, having notched up six, out of a possible seven, wins to date. Led by Senior Coach Mick Stinear and Captain Kate Hore, the group is playing a terrific brand of footy – one that I know they’re excited to build on over the coming weeks. It’s been fantastic to see the support of the Demon faithful, both at home and away, and I hope you’re looking forward to what lies ahead.

Thank you again for the warm welcome I have received so far from everyone involved with the Melbourne Football Club. Together I know we can continue to make everyone proud to belong. I hope to see you at IKON Park on Friday night for our AFLW clash against Essendon.

Go Dees,

Paul Guerra

CEO Melbourne Football Club

  • Whispering_Jack changed the title to Melbourne Football Club - The CEO

Wish Trac all the best with his life and the injury he sustained, but let’s remind ourselves that the grass isn’t always greener (Ablett to Gold Coast and his incessant premiership talks, Deledio to GWS at the end of 2016, Fevola and Beams to Brisbane, Gibbs to Adelaide, Vickery yo Hawthorn..)

But, good riddance to Petracca and I have full belief Guerra and Smith will lead this club really well and back towards the top end.

He continues to impress every time he speaks

Liked the email and the intent, including the Lamb video, though it’s a pity we couldn’t even spell our own players names right in the subtitles in the embedded Lamb video

Solid response by the CEO.

I hope/assume he means a couple of picks in the high teens or low 20's (after NGI/academies/F&S) isn't going to turn our heads.

I'm happy with all that he's said albeit it's fairly predictable, however found it odd he was wrapping up the season, and thanking everybody etc, when the AFLW is still ongoing, I don't want to be negative but it's sort of a backhanded slap to the W team.

In his email to members he states hope to see you at Ikon on Friday to watch our girls, and also commends them on the season performance so far. 👍

Thereis a lot to like about the way the club has responded. Trac can explore but the club have said for any deal to eventuate the club come first. He is contracted with 4 years to go, is a club icon and a required player. Trac may find himself back at the Dees next season

Thanks I didn't see that

I guess Id be happier if he reiterated Christian is a once in a generation player and further said as a strong club we will be working with him to make sure our club is better with him in it.

I believe a strong club uses every resource available. A strong club will get the best from an individual and will use the player to achieve short and long term success. You dont give your opposition resources that you should use.

It may take some hard conversation between the coach and the player as to what and how success is defined. In AFL team success is greater than the individual and this must be considered before Christian goes anywhere. Certainly if he comes back to the club it would require some pretty strong argument from him about why we let him go.

The AFLW will go the way of the WNBA in being ridiculed and lambasted by cynics if we keep forcing token gestures just for the sake of it. He also clearly says "end of the AFL season" before mentioning AFLW. I'm sure the AFLW team can deal.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
