The online edition of the Herald Sun is carrying an article by Mark Robinson in which Gary Pert explains that controversial comment about the club’s culture ~

"My point, that was taken out of context - I was saying we are dealing with player behaviour issues and I don't want the entire club being tarnished by that," he said.

"When I made the comment, we had won more games of footy in the past three years than any other team (in the league) and had recently won a premiership, and that we were doing a lot of great things. I was saying, the player behaviour issues had to be dealt with in that regard and not discredit the Max Gawns, Jack Vineys and Kate Hores ... I didn't want the whole football club being tarnished by a couple of people."

In what was a complex situation, Melbourne had to carry the can for its players being in the controversial and secretive AFL drugs program, which meant the club wasn't fully across all the information - and still isn't. It's frustrating, but it's reality.

"I did take offence, and maybe got a bit emotional, but I did take offence to a couple of players' behaviour tarnishing what I think is a club full of magnificent people," Pert said.

I’m sure this won’t satisfy everyone but it’s logical and consistent with the views expressed to me in recent months by some of the senior group of players.

In that article, Robbo makes this extraordinary comment:-

1. I don’t believe this accurately reflects the situation.

2. The comment more accurately describes public reaction to Robbo’s dismissal from AFL360.

This thread has gone berserk so I'm sure any comment I make will be three pages back within minutes and never seen again, but I'm going to go on record with my feeling about Pert.

1. Extremely capable and driven. Had clear visions for change to bring about success as a club at both Collingwood and Melbourne, and personally committed to making it happen. Surging financial positions and on field success came to both clubs under his leadership.

2. An 'excess of awareness of own abilities' (I am so polite) led him to not respect role boundaries and the decisions made by others, at both Collingwood and Melbourne, leading to a continuously accumulating breakdown of role definitions and an undermining of the crucial need for unity of purpose once decisions and plans had been set. I suspect he may even be addicted to creating change. This appeared to particularly affect the football side of things with both clubs experiencing unexpected and not fully justifiable slides after their premiership peaks.

As Sun Tzu said, to understand the weaknesses of anyone you must study their strengths.

Also, always attack a man/woman's strengths. No-one expects you to go for the strongest part of the fort.

Up the middle, that's where the action is, grab life by its little bunny ears and get in its face because that my friend, is living!

Imagine supporting a boring club, at least there’s something always happening at the MFC to get us through the off season.

Try again, can you show the article where Pert shopped Oliver around behind the football departments back?

Where did he say being the football departments back?

I held the view that the moment Pert started calling clubs directly to shop Oliver following Goody and Gawn speaking about how they love him and back him, a divide was created that could only end with one of Pert or Goodwin leaving the club.

What a day huh.. anyone check in on @drysdale demon and @Satyriconhome...

Poor loves must be beside themselves that it's all just a media agenda once again.

Anyhow, it needed to happen. Thank you and goodbye.

Oh dear, had to make it personal again Daz, disappointed he' s gone, did some great things for club, thought it may be inevitable, give the club some clear air.

Glad he will be still involved with Caulfield

Of course something more disappointing and inevitable is some of the ungracious [censored] posted by some.

Nothing personal when I'm only checking in on my fellow compadre..

It's been very widely reported Saty, I know you're allergic to anything negative being said about the club, but even you have to admit this has been a mess.

You want proof for an explicit opinion?  Or are you seeking proof for a matter which is not contested?

I don't have any inside information but I believe the Melbourne Football Club will promote George de Crespigny to the CEO position. George is currently the Chief Commercial Officer.

George has been working with the Melbourne Football Club for 11 years. George previously worked at the AFL for 8 years and the ACT Brumbies.

George was a great Footballer for the University Blues Football Club.

I'd like this. George was one of the candidates that PJ put forward initially...

A number of people in this thread with the false bravado of someone who thinks and sees the world in black and white.

I am glad for the decision that Gary seems to have made because it seems to have been made in the best interests of himself, the staff, and the best interests of the future of the club.

We couldn’t afford to wring change without that best interest and willing self-sacrifice.

Not every tenure is holistically bad or good and those of you harbouring misgivings over half a decade are just as ridiculous as those believing ‘reports’ of his executive malfeasance.

Life is more humdrum than some think it is, it is less sensational than Tom or Sam accuses it of being, and it comes full of good people trying to do their best.

And with that, I say thanks to Gary and look to the future, and the next executive on a hiding to nothing in some eyes.

Saty thinking we're fine at the same time as the President and CEO are both gone, our two best players seriously considered leaving and we finished 14th. Nothing has changed in the last 15 years haha

Are Sally and Angela long term supporters of the Dees if not what are they doing here?

Surprised it's been announced this way, rather than through the club.  9 hours behind so I have not read all reports etc.

But it's not an easy job, did most things pretty well, not everyone will agree.

A clean sweep at the top probably a good thing.

The inability of the club to show outrage over the Gus hit and ludicrous result, and then to have the players, shake that eff in C's hand. Made my blood boil still does thinking about it.

And then the debacle or failure to least to put a stop to the Petracca and Oliver trade rumours,  3 errors.  It's time.

Look forward people,

Go Dee's

You could feel it coming from the moment he reportedly shopped Oliver around.

that implies he shopped him around, so that also implies he did that behind the football departments back.

The guy is delusional.

I still remember him carrying on like he is now a week before Mark Neeld was sacked stomping his foot around telling everyone what a great coach Neeld was, and was openly critical of anyone here who said otherwise.

This is Saty at his absolute element.

It is a quote, maybe he said they could have been handled better, didn't, say by whom,  slightly different, but doesn't attract the same number of clicks

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?
Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
