MFC 2024 BEST & FAIREST NIGHT

Recommended Posts

Chandler top 10, proving once again that Demonlanders don’t know what roles players are asked to play. Half of this site is constantly calling for him to be dropped. I crown thee “the next ANB”.

Not really, format dishes out a lot of votes they have to go somewhere

Played every game, in the guts, finished off season without a lot of help at times. GC game was immense

Max was great, but missed a couple of games, and was doubled teamed a few times

Don't think I would have had him in the top 3 to be perfectly honest. That game against GC was his best in quite a while. 10 games where he didn't top over 20 possessions.

Max much more prolific and Trent Rivers not even getting in the top 5 is pretty weird.

Why do so many call him 'Bullen'?

I’ve always called him ‘Business’ coz you need an ABN for a business and it’s close.

not clever but still

I apologise if I’ve touched a nerve. It is your choice to support mediocrity.

I will continue to demand higher standards.

There were a number of 'incidents' that had a marked impact on our performance this year viz losing Gus, JS29 stuffing up, no, or limited preseason for Clarrie and Melky, losing Trac, and yes, some ordinary recruiting.

In an even competition there'd be 17 years between flags.

Methinks that you might be better off following a comp where there were, say, only 10 teams.

My local team (one of 10 in the league) has won the last two flags and has lost only 5 games in the last three years. They're easy to follow. No need for me to demand higher standards.

I thought it would be either Max Gawn or Jack Viney.

Very close!

Jack Viney now has 2 Melbourne Best & Fairests, the same as his Dad, Todd! Well done!

Go Demons in 2025! ❤️💙👹

Nibbler getting 3rd should hopefully bump up his trade value to the Crows. 😉

Are you guys for real? Harold Ball was an Australian Army medic, 33-game premiership ruckman, executed on a beach in the Pacific by Japanese soldiers during World War II.

I didn't know that, thanks. Do you know if it was related to the Bullwinkle and co events/tragedy?

There really were some games towards the end of the season when we weren't doing that well but Jack stood out. Heart and soul kind of stuff.
Congrats Jack on your second Bluey. Well deserved.

He’s not a good public speaker. Never has been.

Also if you’re not drunk after the last 3 weeks, you’re doing it wrong

Spot on …he is not the best public speaker …it’s a lot easier sitting behind a keyboard and typing away. He’s genuine ..he loves the club & the players & that was certainly reciprocated. So for at least for tonight put away your cynicism and vitriol and take on board the positivity and hope from every person who spoke.

I’m surprised by this result if I’m being honest. But what do I know? I’ve been drunk since round 24 trying to cope with being a Melbourne supporter

We went down to the MCG for the loss against GWS in Rd 20. We haven't sobered up or thawed out since!!

My god I love Jack Viney

His sheer will and mentality coupled with Maxys leadership have kept the ship afloat until now

I honestly don’t think he was that good this year. He has been better a few other years but if anyone deserves it he does

In times of Instagram italian food and crazy partying this is the man who backs up what he says.

We love you Jack

Unfortunately I think it's locked in that we get their second round pick (currently 25).

We won't get their first pick (4).

We may get steak knives (they currently have picks 42 and 60).

I reckon we'll be asking for more than 25, but might be hard to get it. Suspect we'd be wanting a pick 17-20 to reflect value.

Exactly. What I was reminded of tonight is that we have a fantastic core of players (past and present) that deserve our continued appreciation and support, for they are the 'team we love'. As supporters, let's do everything we can to ensure the off field component is as engaged and focussed as them.

Pick 25# and pick 42# would be acceptable.

Could then package them up in a deal to Brisbane or Gold Coast for first round picks.

2024 Player Reviews: #50 Ben Brown

Coming to Melbourne after seven years as a leading goal kicker at North Melbourne, Brown was well known for his unique, extremely long run up on set shots for goal. After some early setbacks injury wise settled into the full forward position in time to play a big role in the 2021 premiership win with three goals. Unfortunately, the remainder of his time at the club was hampered by injury including the need to undergo knee surgery. He retired from playing football at the end of the season after 4

2024 Player Reviews: #41 Kynan Brown

Brown, the son of former Demon hard nut Nathan Brown, made a couple of cameo appearances as a substitute which included a brilliant run down tackle which may have saved the game against the Kangaroos. Had some outstanding games at VFL level and finished equal sixth in the best & fairest at Casey. AWESOME FOURSOME by Meggs

The rejuvenated Demons out tussled the Tigers by 13 points to make it four wins on the trot on Saturday which means that the slight possibility of a finals appearance remains alive in 2024. This is despite the AFLW handicapping the Demons against their peers yet again (more later). Lots to celebrate as it was Kids Day at Casey Fields and both teams ran onto the ground modelling their Pride jumpers.   Kate Hore won the toss and kicked to the Clyde end. Thankfully, the notorious Casey

    MORE FIERCE by Meggs

We’re back!  Winning the last three matches has recaptured our Demon spirit and, with superstar players returning from rehab, our Season 2024 dreams are not over yet.   So come along 5.05 pm Saturday afternoon to watch this Round 9 ladder-defining match at the Field of Dreams. Expect the Tigers to be fierce, but surely the Demons will be more fierce. Playing conditions are expected to be a dry 15 degrees with a typically gusty Cranbourne wind. THE TRADING CHRONICLES 03

Part 3: Happier Days by Whispering Jack It would be fair to say that when the Melbourne Football Club entered the free agency and trade period earlier this month, its reputation was flagging, if not in tatters. The club was taking a battering in the media and social media over a number of issues, some real and others imaginary and even fabricated, relating to the running of the club, team performance and its culture, a build up that’s been taking place for more than twelve months. IN FRONT by Meggs

In this must-win clash between Melbourne 11th on the ladder and St Kilda 8th, it was the Demons who were in front all day to win in a hard-fought Round 8 clash to make it three in a row to keep theit slim finals chances alive. A good crowd of enthusiastic footy families for week 2 of Pride Round had gathered.  The full pews in the well-appointed RSEA Park grandstand provided excellent viewing.   The Saints won the toss and elected to kick to the southern end favoured by a strong 2-3 g

    THE TRADING CHRONICLES 02

Part 2: Watching grass grow by Whispering Jack Critics of test cricket (and I’m not one of them) will often claim the sport is excruciatingly boring: that following a five day match is much like watching grass grow. However, the longest form of that game has nothing on the first week of the AFL trade period when it comes to inducing sleep among those in the football public who follows this process in its somnolent moments. The week gone by has been no exception. Only two player trades

    THE CAVALRY ARRIVES by Meggs

The injury plague which has beset the Demons 2024 campaign is finally starting to dissipate and with consecutive wins over GWS Giants and a 2-point nail-biter in Adelade, a sense of optimism is rising.  Some commentators are now asking whether the Dees can make finals? A huge surprise with team selection this week when it was announced that champs Olivia Purcell, Paxy Paxman and Eden Zanker would play.   Hallelujah!  The cavalry has arrived. St Kilda missed the finals last season on pe

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised
