Rory Sloane to the Dees as Assistant Coach?

Featured Replies

Thought we were getting Heppell based only on the pic.

I have no idea of his coaching credentials but as a player and leader, ticks boxes.

  • Demonland changed the title to Rory Sloane to the Dees as Assistant Coach?

Yes correct

I don’t really mind who we target but they must bring in new ideas get a different game plan going and refresh our group of champs role players and promising youngsters  plus 5/6 new trades and draftees.

Please  don’t  apply if you don’t want to fight for the above. You will be a Tim Watson / Mal Blight / ex coach recently before Rossy with the Saints if you are old school and defensive. New Breed need only apply on Social Media please!!

I can't imagine it's like doing a 4 year tertiary degree. It's probably an online course outlining the protocols of managing people rather than a knowledge of football tactics.

Not as a direct replacement for McQualter.

Goodwin needs a right hand who sees the game from the box and relays back to him quickly, a lot of trust is put in that relationship. At least a bit of experience knowing how things work in a coaches box is preferable in my opinion.

If he's coming on as a backgrounder then all for it but for this particular role I don't think you can be fresh off the boat.

Could be coming in to do more of a mentoring role or development role like Conca.  Doubt he’d be stepping into the midfield coaching role which is our most senior assistant position.

Since his retirement in may, spent the remainder of the year helping out coaching. If he wished to make this his future could easily have had the time to complete the minimum certificates in coaching to get in.

Highly admired him as a player, if he can instil his on field values into any of our players it would be great for the club.

Always wondered about the ‘what if’ when we told him we’d take him in the draft if available but couldn’t pass up Jamie Bennell when he was still an option.

found a lengthy interview from his retirement with 7 news way back when he retired where he states that his house in Adelaide would probably cost 4 times as much in Melbourne so i speculate he’d want a proper job and not just a toe in the water role.

(link to the interview is https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=477884534588742&vanity=7NEWSAdelaide but please note it’s mostly a fluff piece to show he’s doing fine)

I’d be hoping for more of a development role than straight up midfield coach, but he’s a great person and would be an excellent addition. His sister works with the AFLW side so he’d have some insight in to the club.

Like the guy a lot — intrigued by what he would add.. things looking up for 25 already

Bassett replacing Stafford not McQualter is my take — Sloane could easily be a line coach right now based on his exp imho

Let’s not forget it’s welcome home for NB — Dees man originally as a player!

Not against this. The man understands alot about rehab, has spent alot of time watching when injured, was a great player and presents as a decent human, reasonably eloquent as well. Never struck me as FIGJAM either.

Is he still up for a midfield run? Might need him if Trac & Clarry are gone come 2025 🤪

Just thinking of Yze ... home-grown Demon - perhaps forever. What a loss ...

Geez he was a terrific footballer.

I seem to recollect we tried to get him as a player a few years ago, or is  my memory totally shiraz shocked?

I don't know about his coaching credentials but he'd certainly bring a lot of nous and experience.

I know that for his draft year we told him that if he was available, we’d select him only to go back on that and instead select………Jamie Bennell 🤬

I hope he is a great line coach for us and we really need new ideas. But I just hope to god Goody watched the final series and took in the frenetic ball movement needed to wins flags now. That’s because Goody will still be calling the shots with all these newbies coming on board.

Interesting indeed. Definitely would be a good addition from a culture and leaderships perspective.

Interesting remarks from departing Tigers players on Yze today - not hard enough on players.

Funny world. Wasn't it reported on Demomland in like 2012 that he and his family wouldn't go near the club after we promised to draft him and then flaked?

Glad to see people can move on after a decade.

Although some have concluded that his 0 votes given to Lachie Neale that subsequently cost him the Norm Smith, might've been because he never returned home to play for Adelaide.

As for moving on, well it's easy when a six figure salary is floated to you

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
