Kozzie is our best forward and is also a quality midfielder. He's one of the biggest game breakers in the AFL and if we lost him nothing we'd get back in a trade is coming close to replacing what he does for our football club.

If Jackson does return to Victoria, it's not coming via a Kozzie trade and it will either be an extraordinarily messy break up or a hostage situation. Let's hope for the former.

As an exercise, slot him into this line up of small forwards published end of last year, and remember he has only just turned 24.

I for one hope that the Van Rooyen / Jefferson combination can build up to provide the tall structure which makes life more fun for the little guys.

It’s not that bad, Viney now has 3 years to go, Trac and JVR 4 and Clarry 5. Kozz is getting a long deal and a big wedge but the cap is going up so there’s plenty of room for others.

Had to do whatever it took to keep Kozz, absolute freak.

As others have noted, the salary cap is expected to rise pretty significantly in coming years. This deal feels massive now but in 2-3 years I’m guessing it’ll be a relatively common offer for the game’s top players.

I am slightly worried about the critical need to extend Judd this year and Bowey, Chin, and Disco next year. But I’m not sure any of them will be out of our price range even with this contract and it seems like they’re pretty content at the club.

I also think there’s a bit of an argument that this actually might help our ability to sign veteran free agents in that Koz is the kind of talent that others may want to play alongside.

My view on this stuff is fans just have to get used to these big, long term contracts.

From a list management perspective, nothing can ever be fully locked in unless player movement changes (which it won't). So this gives the club some assurance over the short to mid term. And if we never want to trade him, we could well hold him to contract ala Clarry and Trac.

It does have some other flow on effects for us. 1) it stops the external noise that could become a distraction for the club. 2) it shows potential trade targets that we can keep our best players and that they want to stay here for the long haul. 3) it allows us to know exactly what we can do this year and next with our TPP heading into likely compromised drafts.

It's clear to me that we still have the list to challenge for the flag (not this year necessarily, but next), but we do need to get creative and nail some trades and recruits to plug those holes on our list. Namely a tall forward, an x factor small forward and a different type of mid with zip and ball use to complement the new brigade.

Signing Kozzy allows us to be more aggressive in the player market ASAP.

If anything it gives more flexibility with restructuring it as required across the term to meet whatever our objectives are. Comfortable in the salary cap? Bring some of Kozzie’s contract forward. Need to free up some cap to land a big fish for a few years? Chuck some of Kozz’s money back a few years.

Obviously all that requires Kozzie to be amenable to those adjustments, but assuming like all footballers he’ll be motivated by wanting the team around him to be good as possible, and he makes bank either way. It’s not like only earning 700k instead of the full 1.4 or whatever for a time is going to stop him from putting food on the table.

I was happy enough with Florian Wirz to Liverpool. Kozzie signing on for 9 more years is next level. What a day!!!!

The bolded bit of your post is something that doesn’t really get considered by those who query the length of deals like this.

We all want him to stay here for his career. Whether that’s 1 contract, 2, or 3, who cares. We’d end up in the same place when all is said and done in 9 years.

Getting this contract locked away allows us to move our focus to the rest of the list/market, with more certainty over the future.

Yes, it’s a lot of money, but if we don’t offer it someone else will, and it’s one of few levers we can pull to get him signed.

It’s also a massive sign of faith in the club, which, whether we like it or not, is a good thing for us. He’s marketable, popular and a genuine match-winner who is still improving yet is already at or exceeding the output of comparable players at comparable stages of their careers.

I can’t express enough how much of a win I see this as for us.

Whatever you think of the deal as an armchair expert, there is not a dees fan in this world who would be happy to see Kozzie play for anyone else.

So focus on that - this keeps him in the red & blue, OUR star, OUR gamebreaker that every other club and AFL fan (yes, even those criticising the deal to make themselves feel better) would love to cheer for.

The dollars, the 2nd and 3rd order implications on other players - none are clear right now and all are someone else's responsibility. All we have to do is enjoy when the kid flips games for us as he's doing more and more.

It's brilliant news that I never expected given how things have gone the last few seasons.

I've got no qualms with the above comments and as mentioned multiple times in the last 24 hours, if you have the chance, sign him. This can be a wonderful thing.

But my only question, and I'd appreciate if it could be answered respectfully without being gaslit or accused of not watching/knowing anything about the game, is if the idea of the deal is to protect our bargaining power in future trades then why would it be a terrible idea to exercise this right now with 2 years left on his current contract and make this offer in 12 months time? Is it a case of his price only going up? Being super proactive and striking while the iron is hot?

I'm willing to be open to the fact that the contract landscape is changing. I also think that what Nasher mentioned about the flexibility and being able to move money around to other years of the contract makes it team friendly and something I haven't considered much before. What I ultimately want is players who want to play for the best football club in the world who want success and want it HERE and I hope he sees it that way.
