Pert and Roffey - The Review Thread

Very good interview. He is clearly well versed in the situation and hopefully Whateley actually listened to his guest because it would sure change his coverage of our club.

Most importantly Speed stresses that the reviews are not public material. They are meant to be confidential and not a media picnic.

Speed said that the review shouldn't be made public because it could damage people's reputation. But if changes are made as a result of a review, then any person that loses their job ultimately has their reputation damaged.ย

I think the point he was making is that the review should be brutally honest, regardless of whether wholesale changes occur. For instance, Goodwin could survive the review, but still have brutal feedback conveyed to him without it being public knowledge.

Don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, but HOW and WHY is Gary Pert a part of conducting the review of the men's football program?

"This review is being conducted by President Brad Green, CEO Gary Pert and external consultant Darren Shand." - MFC website.

Gary Pert should very much be under review. He is at the top, he needs to be investigated, and should come into question regarding his polarizing statements around club culture. In his position he was primed to identify any early signs to ensure the right environment was set. It clearly spiraled out of control.

Ignition, I think the review is about identifying the changes needed to reset the Club and our Football program off the back of the past few seasons. I would be really concerned if the CEO was not a part of this process as without this there would be no ownership of the report findings and resulting action plan.

I would expect that as part of the review Darren Shand and his team if external consultants would review the organisations processes, interview people across the organisation, and present the draft report findings and action plan to the CEO and President prior to finalising the report. This ensures the CEO owns the report and its findings and the President'sย involvement also allows Darren to raise any concerns re the CEO directly.

It is also worth noting that Darren has worked with the club earlier this year, a fact that is lost in the media, and in every likelihood his review was probably planned for months ago.

Don't think so. In the Whateley interview, Kate was emphatic that there was no external review required, and she mentioned the All Black involvement during the season. Can't know for certain of course, but I reckon Mr Shand got a quick call soon afterwards when the Board eventually accepted the obvious point that an internal review would not cut it.....

The story in the Hun today about the culture at Melbourne Storm is a great read. Go and get who ever is in charge at Storm and bring them over.ย

Agree. Though Speed also said Brendon Gale was involved at Richmond and it was successful.ย

I love when Speed suggested Green should have (or still could) ask for "a month to get things sorted" and hopefully get the media off our backs for a bit.ย

Probably the difference is that Gale hadn't been there that long and so therefore was not essentially 'part of the problem'

From memory he was appointed in Dec 2015, the club performed poorly in 2016 and the review was commissioned. They won a flag in 2017.

And interestingly from the terrific interview Speed said all the copies of the review were retrieved and shredded. Ho one was allowed to leave the room with a copy. It was definitely not a document for public consumption and nothing from the report was leaked into the media.

Seems textbook to me.

I don't have any faith in Pert from personal dealings in days gone by and he to me seems 'part of the problem'. His presence in an 'external' review would seem to undermine the process. I hope not and hope the Dees can get back on track.

He was appointed in 2009.ย  He famously developed the 10-year strategic plan in 2010 where they planned to win 3 flags by 2020......

I am not disagreeing with the above, but if there is any problem(s) with Pert as CEO it will come out.. I expect this review to take at least 2 months. People will be assessed and spoken to more than once, by different peopleย

If we, fromt this far outside the bubble think Pert might be part of the problem, I wonder what those much closer but not in the inner sanctum think?ย

Jones, Lyon, Shwarz, Neitz, Hopgood, to name a few.ย

You might say Essendon haven't benefited from it yet, but their recent review involved Brendan McCartney, Jordan Lewis withย  EY coordinating it. So players and staff could respond openly in their interviews to respected external AFL folk. That's an external review.

Although McCartney was a former assistant coach of Essendon so might not be all that unbiased.

So Gale was in the seat for 7 years and his strategic plan had been written 6 years earlier when this review was carried out. Did Caroline Wilson express dismay at the time?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
