There's no way Jason Taylor is making this mistake again.

His top 30 for this year's draft will be fascinating though. Easily 3 or 4 players could go number #1 in the 2024 AFL National Draft.

 

The Melbourne Football Club could almost sell "tickets" for behind the scenes access to members before draft day. Join Jason Taylor and the recruitment team on a day doing a mock draft. But the prize winners would probably have to only quietly observe and sign NDAs until a few months after the draft. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Well said. I see the same things with Smilie. I do wonder about his work rate. He can break tackles and use that body to break lines but more often then not he will back track and end up kicking high off balance kicks under pressure.

I've been to a few of his games and its what he does when he doesn't have the ball that worries me as well. Doesn't always stay engaged or work hard for his team mates whether its running hard into space as an option, or defensively, laying sheppards. He doesn't get on the move after disposing the ball and often stands still asking for it back. Not sure if its an attitude thing but time will tell. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I think its these little things that will see him slide to the 7-10 range.

I do however think a lot of these things are fixable. I don't see him playing midfield his first season (or two) but with his size he could start in a different position and build up to playing AFL midfield.

If Draper goes to the Crows Smith may fall through to us at 5/6.

Smith has risen to every level he has played so he should be a good player at AFL level.

Then with luck Tauru falls through to us at 9. 

Twomeys top 10 is usually ok within a pick or 2.

If we’re not taking the Viking at 5, we have to make out like we are. That way, if North want him, they can’t trade with Richmond, and have to take him at 2. This leaves us with an extra top 5 ranked player to pick from, probably another gun mid.

Do we bid on Lombard at our pick? He’s a talent and Suns need to pay up. Assume Suns (guaranteed) to match it and would cost them a decent points bounty.  Not sure why clubs delay in bids… surely Ashcroft gets bid at 2 or 3, Lombard at 5 or 6, Kako at 10 or 11, Marshall at 13 or 14 and Camporeale at 15 or 16.  Make the clubs pay the right rate or higher to get these “prioritized” youngsters.

Plenty of the Dees faithful would be getting a bit obsessed with this draft. In the end we will just have to put our faith in JT.

If we go for Armstrong at 5 one of the factors may be that May and TMac are in the career twilight and we have Petty and Turner who can play back. We will then go a potential gun mid/running back at 9.

I would expect that he play at Casey for a season or 2. Hopefully Jeffo plays regular AFL this year.

Cadman was seen at as reach by GWS when they traded for pick 1.

If we do not pick him at 5 i suspect the Saints will pick him at 7 or 8 and the best mid available with their other pick.

A big winner during the trade period, the Demons positioned themselves nicely for the draft by grabbing a second top-10 pick.

They already held pick five, but also managed to nab pick nine from Essendon.

Melbourne gave the Bombers some later selections – as well as their future first-round pick – as part of the deal, but are now well-placed to bring in two top-end talents.

List boss Tim Lamb has declared that “supporters should be really excited”.

With two top picks, the Demons could snag two different types of players.

At pick 5, a gun midfielder like Harvey Langford, Jagga Smith or Josh Smillie would be handy.

At pick 9, Melbourne would surely have to look at Sandringham Dragons key forward Harry Armstong if he was still available.

Measuring 195cm, Armstrong’s best traits are his overhead marking and his accurate goalkicking, while he also has the tank to push up the ground and get back.

The Demons are also considering picking up Gippsland Power small forward Ricky Mentha as a Category B rookie, through their Next Generation Academy.

It seems obvious that we will have a list of players that we rank in some order, or that we would choose if they are available at both picks . 

So at pick 5 we will pick whichever of those players we are sure will not be there at 9 

I see spitting of picks as crazy unless we do not go back far and get a first rounder next year back as well, we definitely need two players, have we room for more?.

Intrigue, intuition, intelligence, and subterfuge,    what a great 3 or 4 weeks for this stuff. Plus the Melbourne cup and the race in the USA,

In JT we must trust him to do the work again,  glad it's not my job.

its langford for mine, and travaglia or tauru (if north dont take him at 6) at 9. trainor im unfamiliar with but he or armstrong would be my go at 9 if Travaglia is gone. but given we've taken jeffo and kentfield in recent drafts i dont think another key forward would be the priority.

im fully anticipating the roos tigers pick 2 trade to happen as roos dont need inside mids which is the top 5.

I will not be disappointed at all with Langford as our first pick. Think there is more than enough upside and point of difference there to become at least a very good mid in the competition and strengthen our midfield unit. Which is what it's about, not finding the next Brownlow fancy.

Seems that it’s likely to be either Langford or smillie. My only issue is that they are both big bodied midfielders and likely to be a bit slower than the smaller mids. Is this an issue considering Oliver and trac as similar types?

Pick 9 to be used on best available key defender. It would be no surprise if we take Trainor here. 

The word is Jefferson is coming along and will be ready for senior footy in 2025.

Smith and Trainor is my guy feel.

Trainor is a massive risk having already had concussion issues.... hope we don't go down that road.

Back in 2009 they did!

It was a whole draft event, I don't think there were tickets sold as such, but a pre-registration for interested members. I'd guess as many as 100 people showed up for the draft night event hosted by Chris Connolly, who gave us all a rolling update on who we were hoping would be available. Scully and Trengove were wheeled out for a quick interview within an hour of being drafted.

Fun fact - we had our eye on Melksham but he was gone by our pick, so Gysberts it was. Each of Tapscott, Gawn and Spencil were exciting sliders - we would allegedly have taken Gawn at 18 except we were so keen and surprised that Tapscott was available, and would have taken Spencil at 30 except Gawn was unexpectedly there, and then Spencil was still available at pick whateverish.

Allegedly. That was how they played the spin live on the night.

Hmm, wondering who else here was there on that fateful and strange night?

It is my gut feel on the Picks. I’m hoping for Smith. I think he will give us a more balanced and explosive midfield… His ball winning ability at centre clearances and stoppages will go a long way to us putting wins on the board. 

If Smith is gone, I would like us to take The Flying Viking at Pick 5 if he ain’t gone already. And best midfielder available at Pick 9…

Would almost guarantee Smith and/or Langford falls to us if North takes Tauru at 2 

Of course it also suggests that we’re into Tauru at 5, which I’m not sold on
