Samuel Grlj

Midfielder/ Defender | 182cm | 26/07/2007

High pick potential draftee Sam Grlj took his chance to shine in the VFL for Richmond.

A week after his 18th birthday, the Oakleigh Chargers midfielder impressed with 18 disposals, six marks and five tackles, putting himself in the picture to be among one of the early selections at this National Draft.

Any gun small forwards in the mix? A partner in crime for Kozzie would have to be one of our biggest needs

Lachy Dovaston is the highest rated small forward I believe and has drawn some comparisons to Nick Watson. I don't think he's in the same class personally (not many will be), doesnt have the same pace and aerial game from what I've seen.

Still he has tricks, is tough and competitive and can use both sides reasonably well.

Has kicked 26 goals from 11 games while averaging 5.5 tackles for Eastern ranges and kicked 9 goals for VM in 4 games at the champs.

Keep in mind we have Marcus Prasad (unless it's another Ah-mu situation) who is in our NGA performing very well as a bottom ager for Dandy.

Edit: Talor Byrne also kicked 5 for VC as a small forward, marks well for his size. Been mainly playing as a mid for GWV though.

prasad is definitely mfc eligible in 2026, pending any rule changes between now and then (which is entirely feasible / likely)

Is it still the case that clubs need points to secure F/S (and NGA?) draftees if other clubs select them? In which case, how can clubs get all - indeed, even more than one - of their F/S (and NGA?) prospects?

Of the WA boys, really like Swan Districts boy Tylah Williams, great lateral movement, clean at ground level and good foot skills, fwd craft. west Coast NGA but they have him Wes Walley, Koby Evans as NGA and Charlie Banfield as FS.

Williams will go late second round or 3rd round I think.

What pick do we get for the 2nd round? Will we be able to use this pick before we have to bid on White and Sinnema?

Warning Uh Oh GIF by goodfortunesonly

We don't usually do small mids but a nice game from Tom Burton with an electric goal at the 6 minute mark

He’s a good player with his pace and footy iq, playing either in the midfield/rover role or as a defender. Impressed in Vic metro game as well but likely to be a 50-60 draft pick.

I'm interested in this fella purely because he has now vowels in his surname. Pity he'll be out of rch

Lachy Dovaston doesn’t even rate in that top 30? (or am I missing something?) If we’re looking for a goal kicking small forward, he would seem to be very good value and very gettable.

EDIT: Well, he’s ranked 13th on that Herald-Sun list Whispering Jack posted below and gets a bit of a comparison to Hawthorn’s ‘Wizard’. Is it possible he could still be getable?

Curtin will probably drop out of first round, season hasn’t been great and out injured with TBA. Koby Evan’s just back from injury and impressive in first hit out back last week, may rise with a good finish to the season.

Essendon could pick a Lindsay with our pick which would be ironic.

I really liked what I saw of Jacob Farrow. Probably out of our range but do you have any insight @Pennant St Dee ?

Yes RT suspect he will be gone before our current picks, composed, good user by foot and reads the play well. Has ability to develop into a good midfielder after he IMO spends first few years at AFL level across half back

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
