It is going to be weird watching our first pick (natural 36) go up and down wildly as academy bids add one selection to the early draft and then the picks being cashed in for points take other selections away.

We could move as high as 40 and then back down to 30 in the space of an hour.

It’ll be interesting to see what new DVI weightings will do to the process. We might see a lot less of the wild pick fluctuations.

As has already been noted, there is plenty of Northern Academy talent around to expand the first night of next year’s draft. Three prospects in the top ten according to Cal Twomey and then there’s Kalani White to consider as well.

Stars of the future: 10 draft prospects to watch in 2025

I’m putting Cody Curtin in that group by seasons end, upside of this kid is huge

Lots of top talent again as shown in the futures game on GF day.  I’m seeing another very compromised draft in 2025 as much of the top youngsters are already tied to academies, especially the Suns who might get 4 quality youngsters again (like they did in 2023! )

2025 draft early walk …

ROUND ONE - (24 players)

Dyson Sharp (likely pick 1)
Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves
Willem Duursma
Zeke Uwland (GCS Academy) *
Daniel Annable (Brisbane Lions Academy) *

Thomas McGuane (Collingwood FS) *
Sam Grlj
Tairon Ah-Mu

ROUND TWO

Thomas Burton
Max King (Sydney Swans Academy) *
Kalani White (Melbourne FS/GCS Academy) *
Luke Candy
Ben Rongdit (Geelong NGA) *
Lachlan Dovaston
Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier

2025 draft early walk …

1st round - 24 players

Fred Rodriguez - accumulator through the middle who is hard around the contest and penetrating kick, personally think his Bulldogs team mate Whan is the better player

Cody Curtin - huge upside key tall with mobility and applies ground level pressure as a forward but can play as key defender with really good closing speed. Think he’ll play mostly senior footy for Claremont next year and I think top 10 prospect who by seasons end will push top 5

Basil Hart(** Freo NGA) interrupted year but has some nice tricks and impacts the scoreboard but not really consistent or shown enough IMO to be considered in the first few rounds

2nd round

Charlie Banfield(**WCE FS) - like his dad very versatile, likely to play more through the middle in his senior year but with his endurance and height as a mid has a great ability to float forward  and have mismatch to result in scoreboard impact

Darcy Montgomery - very talented player but lacks drive, be surprised if he makes many appearances for the state side unless attitude changes can’t see him being drafted

Wes Walley(**WCE NGA) - cruised through this year before getting a reality check after returning from the national championships, where lack of second efforts and desire to chase saw him dropped from Subiaco colts, came back into their preliminary final side and used his pace to apply pressure and maintain repeat efforts. This kid has serious talent - speed, lateral movement, high leap and can tackle with intensity.,I personally think Subiaco colts coaching panel may have done the right thing last year and if he maintains focus and plays to his potential he will attract plenty of interest

Koby Evans(**WCE NGA) - different to Walley in terms of works really hard but doesn’t have Walleys skill set. Athletic, hardworking and potential late pick or rookie at this stage

Marcus Cassidy - not sure he makes it, exceptional junior who I think stagnated a little last year. Knows how to find the footy around the stoppages and can impact scoreboard but I will watch with interest this season to see if he can recapture promise shown as a 15 year old

Jadd Hill - moves really well around the stoppages and has some power to break free from clearance and deliver deep inside 50. Hard nut who uses the ball fairly well and has smarts, I think his size and not having real X factor or polish will impact draft potential

Taj Longmuir… son of Troy !!! Really good by foot and accumulates the footy off half back. I don’t see him getting drafted unless something changes and a focus moves from accumulating to making an impact with less possessions. Doesn’t play forward much but that’s where I think he’s best suited

Toby Whan(** Frem NGA) - really like him has polish, good decision maker who hurts opposition with ball in hand. Reads the play really well, which sees him find the footy in transition and hit  up a team mate or impact the scoreboard

Some you didn’t mention

Blake Kelly - smart inside midfielder who uses the footy really well and works really hard with 2 way run to get back and assist defenders, whilst finding plenty of footy in transition chains with workrate

Harley Cummings (son of Scott) Developing defender with good foot skills, good attitude and reads the play well to intercept. If he continues to grow (currently 192cm) I think he’ll make a good KPD, but will IMO be a 3rd tall defender at worst. Played majority of his junior footy in Western Football league at Flemington I think before family moved back to WA in 2022, think this is the reason he’s not talked about as much but he’s gaining interest and being noticed in the local talent program

Cooper Ramsey - came from nowhere plucked from basketball at the end of 2023 and played as an overager at the National 16s. Has plenty of upside as an athletic ruck and well worth keeping an eye on

Peter Young - key tall who did ACL in 24 pre season, has footy smarts, athleticism and good user by foot for a tall. Can play either end of the ground as a key forward or defender but also can play the intercept defender role

    TRAINING: Friday 6th December 2024

Some veteran Demonland Trackwatchers ventured down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you the following observations from another Preseason Training Session. WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

A couple of intrepid Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock for the midweek Preseason Training Session to bring you the following observations. Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
