Forward entries have been pretty poor under Goodwin regardless of who our midfield coaches have been since 2019.

Even in 17-18 there were some frustrations but we were a much better scoring side then as our half forwards pressed up to the contest aggressively before doubling back to run and gun it to the forwardline.

I think teh right time to make the decision is after the WC game. If we are any worse than 2-6, then times up. Reason being is that you wouldnt want the 6 month payout clause (applicable to Simon's contract extension) to impact the 2026 soft cap.

I believe an interim head coach could work (stem the bleeding, provide a circuit breaker) until a new coach is appointed in the off season.

We've had what one good CEO (Jackson) in about the last 10. The other nine were mostly duds. Our success rate has OT been good.

But 17-18 we were a manic side.

Transition fast to our fwd line, which resulted in lots of space for our forwards to go to work.

Just watch the goal by Milkshake in Q4 against Hawthorn in the SF 2018.

We are miles off that pace today.

We play a completely different style. We were still massive on contested footy and clearance but we had our defenders push up the ground to provide outnumbers when we went forward and left our defenders on an island. These days we have our forwards running back to help out in defence and have no one to go to when we actually win the footy so we can't score.

I see it more as 0-8 instead of 2-6 as the benchmark.

I reckon the board and supporters will be doing cart wheels if we're 2-6 after round 8. The brand of football we've played the last 3 weeks simply can't win games of AFL. Against anyone (aside from maybe WC in Melbourne)

Exactly. Our draw gets laughable after round 9 with games against Hawthorn, Brisbane, Sydney, St Kilda and Collingwood. Ouch.

I could absolutely see us getting a little sugar hit, managing to jag 3 out of the next 4 and the club thinking we're turning things around before getting absolutely smacked back into submission by the better sides.

Yeah it’s a tough draw after 8. 2-6 is an easy fail mark. However to win 2+ games would suggest an improvement from our current footy because if we continue as is, then we are well and truely on the way to 0-8 at which point the above holds.

I can't believe they gave him a segment to begin with. Melbourne ain't many things but getting Melbourne figures into prime time media seats is one thing we have always done well. We've always been good at talking the talk.

One big difference is Denver is 4th in a very competitive western conference.

As a denver fan myself, this was a ridiculous move considering the playoff's are 3 games away.

IMO a move like this has to destabilise the team and jeopardise their chances at a successful playoff run (even though the ownership has cited the sacking as a catalyst to hopefully winning another championship).

But more to the point of this thread, Denver shows us the completely opposite end of the spectrum to the place we find ourselves in. We've got one head office that really hasn't shown as much respect as it should for a head coach that coached the team to their first ever nba title, but is managing their franchise in an aggressive way in hopes of securing the best outcome.

And on the other hand, we've got Melbourne who seem to be hanging on to Goody from a deep position of respect, but are ignoring the downwards trend our team has displayed for the last 18 or so months.

Surely there's a middleground between these two points we can strive for. I don't think managing your coaching staff from an ultra-aggressive standpoint is constructive, but surely there has to be an acceptance that we can, and always will respect goody for what he did for us, but acknowledge that it's time for someone new to take us into the future.

Forward entries were in great shape in 2021 and much of 2022.

It would be a massive mistake to sack Goodwin. Especially in the middle of this season. I would have thought our most successful coach in 60 years would have earned more grace than being sacked after missing the finals once followed by a bad start to the year. Make no mistake this is the veil of negativity at play.

Be patient. Accept that form fluctuations are part of the game, especially when trying to rebuild and change game style at the same time. Support your club. Let’s not be Carlton.

I just struggle to understand what the coach has done, in terms of on field results, to warrant such adamant calls for his sacking. He’s made the finals 50% of his time in charge. Picked us up off the bottom of the ladder once before to win a flag two years later. Who says he can’t do it again? Why does an unknown quantity in a new coach deserve more support than someone we already have who’s proven he can get us playing great footy, in multiple game styles?

I think he deserves much more benefit of the doubt when there are many things up in the air about the club, no CEO for example.
