Mitchell is a good coach but now that people are noticing Hawthorn, they will get figured out very quickly. Longmire is a great coach - but let's see how Sydney goes now that they have a few injuries. We have been two players down from our first 22 since before the season started. That not only is a big loss, but it limits our depth, and our capacity to manage players. Clarry is still at 50% at best. We have now lost our best player for the remainder of the season. The fact that we got within a goal of Brisbane up there, and two points from flag fancy GWS, is another tribute to how Goody gets the absolute best out of what he has. As for tactics: he changed the way the whole league plays with his whole-team defence and his use of wingers and high half-forwards.

Last year there was a huge chorus of people saying out success was all due to Yze. Sure, he was handed a disaster, but has he really shown that he was the brains behind our success?

 Lose Goody at our peril.

My take is we give him another year and this trade period is paramount. He got us a premiership but you could argue blind Freddy could have coached that list to a premiership.

But we need to replace the talent of Brayshaw, Jackson and shoukd have kept Grundy for mine.

I'd like to see the same list management savviness that got us to 2021 and if we head into 2025 relying on the same players it's over. 

But heck, ask a saints supporter if they would take one premiership in their lifetime? 

Two would have just shown it wasn't a flash in the pan

I 100%   agree. Our assistant coaching group is stale. Stafford and Chapman have been great but been there a long time and obviously Goody guys but we need new voices in the place. Mcwalter was forced due to Yze leaving and obviously the midfield has dropped off bigtime for various reasons, he gets another chance with hopefully a fit midfield with some new faces in the centre square on a consistent basis .

Goodwin 8 seasons for finals in 18, 21 , 22 & 23 .. results 1x flag 2 finals is in 18 & straight sets 22&23… strategy after the flag resulted in trading in spuds & letting young talent, fwd issues remain & the ruck wit Gawn playing on 1 leg, the handling of Oliver,  injuries aside who’s responsible? Footy dept needs a shake up & recruiters, who do you replace Goodwin with?

I still hold the opinion that the mindsets of Clarrie, Gawn, Tracca and Viney, coming onto the ground after half-time in a little puddle of conversation and gesturing, won us the flag, ignoring Badloss' directions and making the play to a glorious victory from their own wisdom, guts and bravery, and determination to rip the far Ken game apart.

The Swans finished 8th last year and struggled into the finals. Look at them now. 

 

 Calm the farm and regulate yourselves people.

No question this season has not met expectations. In mitigation we've had a bad run with injury. Losing Gus was a shocker and left a big hole. As others have pointed out the strength and conditioning program needs to be looked at. I don't understand how we can look so flat against a team coming off a 5-day break. Need to get our trades right and bring in some midfield depth.

Let's see where we sit at the end of 2025. Miss finals again and the head coach position will have to be looked at.

By then it will be too late. Strike now while there is a glimmer of hope next year

I assume we all know Goodwin isn't going anywhere until his contract is up( unfortunately imo) but the rest of the footy dept must be looking over their shoulder.

Goodwin got a flag and took a job that no one else would take and that even his friends advised him against so, even though he's never impressed me at all, I guess giving him his contract is what the Club owes him.

It's not as if he's coaching anywhere else when he finishes

Those calling for Goody to be sacked have absolutely no idea about modern football. 
It is because of Goodwin that Kosi resisted the urge to go home. Likewise Petty.

The role of a senior coach first and foremost is to be a people manager. Nobody does that better than Goodwin. 
 

I would seriously look at both our conditioning team and our assistants. The bottom line is that we won a flag with Goody at the helm. The big changes made since 2021 off field have been the loss of Burgess and Yze.

For all those defending Goodwin and throwing up injuries, lack of fitness & those that still cite losing Brayshaw as a reason for our performances this year. What has any of that got to do with the way we deliver the ball inside fwd 50? 

Our two finals losses last year we had more shots on goal and dominated the inside 50’s but we continue to either kick deep into the pockets, bomb it in long or have the most congested fwd line. We are so predictable and everyone knows it. You can change the assistants as much as you want, end of the day it’s Goodwin’d call. 
 

Fritsch & Kosi are class, if they played for other clubs they would be dominating games every other week. If Goodwin is to stay we need to change parts of our game.

They drafted well & we helped them with Grundy & Jordan .. based on our 2 yrs of bringing spuds in ..  it’s comical

Goodwin might be a good people manager however there is more to coaching than simply being great with relationship management. I’d also love to know your measurement of “nobody does it better”, this is very debatable. John Longmire says “hi”.

A coach needs to also articulate their vision and inspire players to walk the talk, something that is clearly lacking for sustained periods of time throughout the season. We are notorious for not turning up mentally to games this year.

Coaches importantly need to define a strategy, make sure all parts are working towards delivering the strategy and making tweaks to ensure the result is achieved. This is where Goodwin falls flat. His inability to make changes quickly or admit a strategy might not be working is a worry.

I think it’s fair to say Goody might be a good mate with the players but not a great game day coach. This could be supplemented potentially with some new assistants to cover the cracks. There will be some heat coming his way and rightly so.

Shake up the football department, possibly a new coach or 2.  Do we need some  who have  recently left the game to come on board?

Trades of late have been terrible.  Have a red hot look at that.

I dont think sacking the coach will help if you havent got the players.

I said at the start of the year that we were a Trac injury away from missing finals - I was right. I'm not sure what we expected tbh when our midfield depth consists of Laurie, Woewoedin, Tholstrup. They're just kids - but it's just not at the level. We knew Oliver would be poor. I don't think any of us thought Viney would be this poor. Deloitte might have broken him...

We simply had to add some senior, good players to this team after the flag. Richmond went and got Tom Lynch. We got Grundy...

And Mr Recruiter, was there any available or do you just want to throw money around in the hope it works. Strange that all the good senior players are on long term deals don't you think. And any suggestions?
