Reminds me of the death spiral we went into after the 2000 Grand Final

Yes almost identical to that although we did not have the rolled gold opportunities to score a second shot at the cup back then as we did in 2022 & 2023.

Watching Goodwin on 360 and he just relentlessly spews complete w&nk-word bingo phrases. It is cliche after cliche.

I thought it was interesting that Goodwin thought Lever was back to his best last week. Also, Goodwin doesn’t like the word “omitted” from the side. Personally, I think that is part of the problem. He is too keen on softening the reality of not performing in the seniors.

It’s just constant lies and spin. He hasn’t got a clue what to do from here.

The thing is he’s not even good at his corporate speak

Maybe he’s totally different behind closed doors but I want to bang my head against a wall after listening to one of his press conferences, so I can’t imagine what it’s like “living in that space” as a player

I've done a power of work and now I understand him

I just have no faith in him.

We still have 'Small Club' syndrome and MO imo Brownie. This club has never been able to step down of the porch and go [censored] with the big dawgs for more than a few consecutive seasons. We are constantly taking one step forward and two back both on and off the field and unable to maintain any momentum from our very short-run successful eras.

Aside from the Peter Jackson era, we've lacked serious leadership at the top for many many decades and have far too often accepted mediocrity as our go to calling card. We are doing the same right now in accepting so many pitiful on-field performances in the last two seasons.

I think you are right in a way about the small club thing.

But at the same time, look at the Bulldogs for example. Now they also haven't been great since 2021. But other than a few inexplicable efforts where they looked like they just lacked intensity, they just seem to deliver value to their supporters. They don't constantly lose games where you walk away going 'what the hell was with the lack of intensity today'. You don't look at their senior players often and think 'what on earth has happened to him'. Really, they have done a great job of giving their fans something to enjoy for most of this century.

As an MFC fan, I completely expect we will lose some or all of the next 4 games, and it will mostly come down to intensity and not getting what we should be getting from senior players. This is in in line with most of what we have seen this century, and it is an indictment on the culture that the club has fostered. But to my mind, that is on the players more than anyone else. Hell you'd think that at some point simple personal pride (even if they don't give a toss about the club or fans) would drive these guys to produce something extra...it just rarely seems to.

It's really disheartening to be honest. It feel's very fake. All season they've been saying we're loving the process, it's about the process yadda yadda yaddda...what's the process guys?

Also goes to say oh don't like the word omitted and we're not focusing on the outcome...it's a bloody win/loss game. It's outcome focused. McCrae said last week in his post game media interview, he was asked about what next for the Pies, he said we had a goal was to win 14 games in the regular season...what goal's are being cooked out of the Dees then? Not much to be excited about. Love the club, but I'm struggling to enjoy the Dees this year.

not sure what you all expect goody to say in these press conferences

and i don't know what you all expect to get from a press conference anyways.

the AFL obligates the coach to speak to the media after the game. The aim should be to tell the media as little as possible. all they want to do is sensationalise so give them nothing

don't tune in to press conferences if they bother you so much

It’s not just press conferences, it’s every media engagement. The conversation on 360 is a more relaxed environment to a press conference where the coaches can show their personality and you have the chance connect with them. Unfortunately Goodwin comes across in these interviews as a person who is artificial and has zero personality. It’s a real shame.

Frustrating listening to Goodwin on 360. Fair dinkum, he should be a politician. A lot of words but no substance. I really don’t think he has got a clue.

Any coach who has failed to address a record like ours on goal kicking accuracy should be well and truly given the boot.

No hesitation.

I dont expect any knowledge of tactics or strategies or even player condition etc to be indicated at a press conference.

Nor do I even expect or anticipate the club to disclose minute detail of the operations and conditions affecting the players like contracts or personal impacts affecting them.

I have followed the club most of my life and have experienced sorrow, frustration and confusion, along with probably every emotion including joy. I have been close to and remote from the club, I have had little influence but as part of the collective have had some influence and had direct feedback from individuals that my support was recognised as valuable. I have also been ignored and occasionally rebuked. I have always been happy to communicate to improve understanding.

I have not always accepted Goodwins actions but acknowledge that he did achieve the premiership and will always thank him and the team for that. I did and do think he has failed to arrest the decline that has happened with what I have thought and said was a strong squad. He is ultimately responsible for the on field results and they have been poor.

We are all aware of the many visible faults and are all unaware of all the actions taken but it seems there are still problems resulting im poor results. Something must be done and Goody has not remied the results.

He will be unlikely to accept that it is fault and he may be correct but it is his responsibility and he must do something about it.

I think it is time for him to go but I think he must be accorded the dignity and respect he deserves. Lets see how he handles the rets of the season and how the players and officials perform . Next season is some way away but certainly some foundations for performance then will be made now..

I will wait and continue to support the club.

He's addressed it but it just hasn't worked

I think we need to give Goody a few more seasons to bed down a game plan that other sides have been playing since 2022...

I stopped listening to them a long time ago.

I think something we should be worried about is how quickly the game changes. Looking at how long it supposedly takes us to learn a new gameplan, by the time it is inbedded in the group, the game will have changed and we will be back to square one!

Couldn't agree more rufus. We are too laconical in general. The will to win is something that appears to be optional and the picking and choosing an acceptable trait.

Players also racking up weeks, sometimes months, of horror performances yet still getting a game or just dropped for a week or maybe two max to work on something and then straight back in.

Ruthless should be our first and last trait in every much but since about half way through 2022 it appears that only select players do this with some others cherry picking when and where thrown into the mix on occasions.

Not expecting top line performances from every player every week, especially rookies, but you would hope for minimum levels of white line fever from 80% or so most weeks.

Should've been at least one more GF appearance from the 2021 list post 2021 but alas.

Too many happy clappers and back slappers on and off the field and for whatever reasons Simon has been unable to get the best from them (other than random blocks of H&A games) since the flag.

I mean I for one would actually like to hear our coach say something of substance and display some personality and emotion once in a while

Listen to any press conference from McCrae, Scott, Mitchell etc. and you’ll come away a lot more informed about what those teams are trying to achieve and with a sense of the kind of leadership those coaches are providing

Goodwin doesn’t need to reveal all 11 secret herbs and spices at each press conference - and to be fair I’d probably be a bit prickly too when dealing with the quality of AFL journos these days - but at the same time it’s one of the few instances where supporters get a window into the person leading their team

Personally I’d prefer not to walk away with nothing but learnings and other corporate cliches

There's a very easy way to fix that 😉

That's (almost) balanced by the happy clappers claiming any criticism of the coach shows disloyalty to the Club and that the Coach bears no responsibility for the team's performance.

Self inflicted DS given the ability that was on this list in the immediate years post 2021.

Memberships down approx 15% - 16% on 22/23 tells the tale.

Under any reasonable pressure from an oppo over more than about one or two quarters or so (at approx AFL average pressure rating) this team is incapable of winning most of the time. We are also incapable of bringing that pressure (in a team sense) for more than about one quarter (sometimes two) in most matches.

The course of most games has become super predictable now. The method in which we use the ball, constant panic playing on & turnovers etc means we have become (for mine) almost unwatchable bar the wizard moments we see from Kozz and Melksham's forward craft. Hardly inspiring.

Edited by Demon Dynasty

He’s record since the flag 16 wins 22/23 with 4 finals losses, 11 wins in 24 & lucky to win 8 in 25, yet he’s talking like we are rebuilding, compared to Lions, pies, cats all contenders! If standards have dropped as mentioned in posts who’s responsible, our assistant coaches are a mess! Our off field a joke waiting on new president & ceo to start when session is over!

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
