I'd seriously offer Adam Simpson the potential coaching gig!

Simpson not going to move from WA

I heard he owns the three largest Hungry Jacks outlets there.

Nothing to see there of course. All above board 🥵

How many recycled coaches have successfully taken a team to a premiership? Mick Malthouse and Leigh Matthews in the last 25 years? That’s not a long list.

I have been a fan of Goodwin, but I am realistic that coaches always have a use by date. The problem is coaches need success, or they get sacked. New coaches can be given the agenda to rebuild, and this gives a little bit of grace time, but successful coaches all seem to end up trying to prop up ever increasing gaps in their list and game plan to achieve another year of employment, and fair enough, I like to keep my job too.

Goodwin knows a rebuild won’t occur with him in charge. But please let’s not take a recycled coach from elsewhere, maybe in a Mark Williams role, but not as head coach.

Personally, I think the club will only pull the pin during the year if the season continues with disasters and we want to start the hunt for a new coach early before other clubs potentially follow suit.

If we stick with Goodwin but fail to make finals in 2025, then the decision must be, can we do a patch up job in the trade period or do we go full rebuild. A rebuild means a new coach.

To the contrary. If you’re doing a list rebuild you want stability all around that.

Playing Bailey Fritsch for 2 weeks in a row now is enough to show me that Goodwin has zero idea when it comes to accountability or credibility. He's omitted Johnson, who has been the only forward playing with intent.

JVR couldn't catch a cold at the moment and is extremely lucky to hold his spot.

Billings omitted is spot on - but he shouldn't be playing in the first place

Nup sorry, but after our capitulations of the last 3 years, incremental improvements aren't going to cut it. We need WINS and lots of them, otherwise the coaching future of Goodwin at MFC could be all but over.

Cmon now Pickett, 2 of the last 3 years we've had 16 wins in the H/A

Something I would only have dreamed of 10 years ago.

I know we lost finals but we can't deny we had a lot of wins aside from last year

We don’t need a full rebuild but we may need some fresh eyes. We’ll have a better idea in 6-8 weeks

Not as such. What you need is ppl that know what they're doing. That doesn't predicate retaining the same coaches etc.

A rebuild by description often involves upheaval. It just needs correctly hand holding.

A lot of talk from Goodwin about a strong review and expect a responce, not where we want to be blah blah blah this week against the cats ( heard it 2 wks in a row now).

Our responce or lack there of will tell us a lot about the players and coach.

Could be a coach killer or saviour performance

100% agree. Could say the same thing about the 2023 finals series, kick 9.17 against the Blues you can't really blame Goodwin for that when you generate that many shots.

I guess the one blame is the gameplan wasn't conducive to generating high quality shots, but still should've won by 3-4 goals.

You can when the quality of those shots means you are less likely to kick accurately and are coming in a crowded forward line.

Agreed.

Johnson offered us next to nothing last week. In order for us to finally win a game, we can't carry players who simply don't impact.

Tonight's address to the players is the 2nd most important in Simon's coaching career after the 2021 GF.

I would like to think that our coach has come up with a theme and a sturdy game plan to turn this all around against a formidable foe.

Ideas for a possible theme could come from such movie gems Major League or Teenwolf.

Both teams were 💩 and managed to turn their seasons around by some hard truths, deep conversations, skilled execution of gameplan, teamwork.

This sound advice from their particular coaches and playing group had a profound impact on their journey and rallied the troops to go deep in their respective competitions.

So who is going to be a Scott Howard(Teenwolf), Chubby(Teenwolf) or our Ricky Vaughn, Jake Taylor, Pedro Cerrano, Willie Mays Hayes ( Major League) tonight?

Carn Dees give em hell.

Port had 16 wins last year and 17 in 2024 yet Hinkley is on the way out. Winning finals is what it’s about. I this regard we have been abysmal since 2021.

I'd say it is.

Johnson 2nd ruck, physical presence and 4 tackles vs Fritsch - dropped marks, missed shots, half arsed tackles.
He offers nothing. For someone as 'experienced' as he is, it's an indictment on our selection and effort.

Now, we have to put JVR in ruck to relieve Gawn (not ideal - he's been pathetic as well this year)

Body of week this season - I know who I'd rather

Hinkley has never even gotten to a GF, let alone won a flag so that is why he is being sacked. Quite overdue imo

Pickett was lamenting a lack of wins in general and I just reminded him of recent history regarding wins

Obviously we all want to win finals. And the best way to do that is to finish top 4 which we did for 3 years which is far from abysmal

Top 4 is great. Winning 0 finals is abysmal.

You say there is a refusal. Based on what?

A lack of buy in from players, particularly senior players who have experienced success, doesn’t just happen. That’s a further indictment on the coach if true.

I am not admonishing the players of responsibility but as I have stated earlier; these players know what it takes and yet they’re potentially not fully onboard with the coach. It could be that the message is old or the players talent is on the wain in which case you either rip down the playing list and start again or you try a different approach with the same players. I can tell you categorically which option the club has chosen.

Also, nothing I have said is hyperbolic. I’ve merely pointed out that we’ve wasted a playing list that will be difficult to replicate any time soon and that in my opinion, a lot of what is occurring now was sown over the past 5-6 seasons. Who is to be held to account? The answer is pretty easy.

I’d be gobsmacked if the game plan gets a sign off without discussion with the LT , other senior players and the Brands management team (joke).

Mate even Goodwin called out Fritsch saying he is not playing well and might get dropped if he doesn't improve

Its not complicated.

His form for the past year and a half is abysmal

All those saying we need a rebuild is annoying me a bit. We have so much young talent, the basis for future proofing the team is there. We've recruited really well in the last few years, and have a wealth of youth.

Really ??? We have no back up key defenders or small defenders.

The cupboard is bare of key forwards.

No decent back up ruck.

The midfield is old & one paced.

Or secondary picks & trades in the last few years have taken the list backwards ie Schache, Laurie, McAdam, Billings, Fullerton.

But hey it's all good.

I'd back Goodwin, the coaching team and our leaders to get us back into form. He did coach us to a Premiership in 2021, finished top 4 in 2022 but struggled in finals due to a banged up list that was too reliant on our star players, got into some excellent form heading into 2023 finals but lost both games by a kick without a forward line (losing Melksham, Van Rooyen and Petty), struggled in 2024 without a midfield but we're within a kick against Brisbane and GWS late in the season before falling away when finals were not possible.

For all of the doom and gloom we are a bloody good side and struggling to learn new game style. There is no harm in backing in our coaches, leaders and players for the rest of the year and see how we build on what was a solid opening match vs GWS followed by really poor performances vs North and GCS.

To me our tactics and midfield has fallen apart since Yze left us, a big miss for us.

If we do replace Goodwin I want someone with fresh ideas, not some old time coach that uses old style tactics.

Maybe assistant coach, or from the minor's but someone with new ideas and a new game plan.

... 2 tackles. Hardly night and day.

We get it, you like Johnson over Fritsch, even when all the facts clearly show Fritsch had a much better game and one with a lot more impact.

Classic confirmation bias.

"New ideas" are meaningless without real and meaningful list changes.

No accident that the first thing Paul Roos did when he arrived was use our draft capital to bring in talented, experienced players who could have an immediate impact.

Of course, you might argue that we could have stayed with Craig and done the same thing, and we'll never know what the result might have been in that case. But the reason we'll never know isn't so much that Craig mightn't have done as well as Roos, it's that Craig was tainted by being part of the Neeld team and the optics weren't good.

If everything else off-field is in place, changing coaches is about sponsors and memberships.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
