Hmm.  Very subjective but I'd have Spargo/Billings/Woewodin/Bowey ahead of Chandler and Tholstrup (at this stage)  Then swap Rivers and MCVee around and I'd be happy with that.  I also like the thought of Darcy Fort as a backup ruckman.

I would also look to replace Salem.

Unfortunately I feel he is past his best and can't contribute as much these days. He's now part of our bottom 6 players in the list, and with the new emergence of young talent I just can't see how he can fit our list.

I thought Harley Reid would be CHF?

A bit early for this.

Pickett as a starting mid is a waste. He’s a top liner in his primary position as a small crumbing forward. The forward line put forth has much less of that.

also whilst I don’t necessarily disagree with the proposed list changes, it’s July.

Had no preseason remember. Give him a full one...

Feels odd seeing people recruiting aggressively to fill our half-back line!

I think we're going okay for the lighter built types of players. Can't see anything stopping Brown being a regular at AFL next season. A little more strength and fitness and te time learning the roles will let him unleash that relentless terrier attitude very effectively. Then we just have to monitor the progress of Bowey, AMW, Howes and Woewodin. That's four potential and likely young smalls running around, with Howes as a mobile 191cm.

I've absolutely got Tholstrup in our best 22 as I think every pre-season will add some real potency to him. I forget who mentioned he had a bit of Paul Chapman about him but gee it fits in every way except the hair.

Sparrow does a job. I've said before that I expect more of him but he isn't 'failing' so much as not growing.

The big uncertainty is what we do with the key positions - this time next season we could have all four of our remaining presidential draft picks (ex Jackson; Jefferson, Adams, Harrison, Van Buren) holding key positions, or just the two already out there.

The ruck problem isn't an uncertainty - it is a 'requires action' item. I have long-term faith in Verral but the immediate problem has its own thread so I'll let it go.

Without a single player traded out or de-listed ahead of their contract, and while keeping Melksham and McDonald, we're looking at six or seven list spots opening up. It's going to be a big draft and so will 2025.

Won't have a preseason if he keeps getting injured. Unfortunately hasn't been available regularly since 2022.

lotsa presumptions at play here

the players we know we're targeting, according to the media:

  • dan houston (pear)
  • isaac cumming (gw$)
  • ryan angwin (gw$)

the players we assume will go off the list as retired, free agency departures, or delisted:

  • gus brayshaw
  • lachie hunter
  • adam tomlinson
  • josh schache
  • js29
  • ben brown

others who are reaching retirement age but still best 23:

  • jake melksham
  • tom mcdonald

players who may have trade value that are speculative guesses at best:

  • christian salem
  • clayton oliver
  • jake bowey

ultimately, there's a lot to play out...

Sparrow can't be traded as he signed this year. Will Yze get on the list?

FFS Clarrie ain't going anywhere. End of story.

I'm more concerned about what our 2027 team looks like, and how we recruit and develop adequate replacements for Gawn, May, McDonald, Viney, Melksham and Salem in that time, whilst acknowledging that Lever, Langdon, Petracca, Fritsch and Neal-Bullen are also 30 by then.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
