Caps space is great when you are either Ron the verge of finals or a finals strong team, if you are [censored] is good for overpaying turnips who keep you near the bottom.

Yep. If you canโ€™t attract anyone to your club because your club is a dumpster fire, then whatโ€™s cap space good for?ย

How about we just don't trade Clayton? Works for me. We really don't have to.ย

Everyone seems to be blaming Pert, and Iโ€™m not really a fan , but isnโ€™t the cause of all this Clarry himself?

He was warned and asked to change his ways a year ago , but apparently has transgressed again.

Best on baller Iโ€™ve ever seen at Melbourne , and the whole thing is devastating, but what are we supposed to do??

Hereโ€™s a 25-point summary of the article on Clayton Oliver's potential trade from Melbourne to Geelong:

  1. Melbourne Demons face a crisis over Clayton Oliver's looming trade to Geelong.
  2. The club is weighing whether to keep a disenchanted Oliver or trade him for less value.
  3. Oliver feels unsupported and let down by the Demons after being used as trade bait twice.
  4. Melbourne risks further deterioration if Oliver stays without feeling fully invested.
  5. Despite tensions, Oliver may attend the Demons' best and fairest night out of loyalty to teammates.
  6. Oliver wants to move to Geelong, and his manager, Nick Gieschen, is working on the deal.
  7. Geelong is calm and confident about the trade, sitting in a strong negotiating position.
  8. The Cats are expected to offer a future first-round pick for Oliver, which is seen as a bargain.
  9. Geelong's psychologist, David Williams, formerly of Melbourne, knows Oliver well.
  10. Oliver could join Bailey Smith at Geelong, potentially revitalising both playersโ€™ careers.
  11. This trade would give Geelong a powerful midfield boost alongside other recent acquisitions.
  12. The situation highlights Melbourne's broader issues, including internal crises and player discontent.
  13. Melbourne initially stated Oliver was staying, but his positive meeting with Geelong changed that.
  14. The club finds it hard to reverse course after considering trading Oliver for two consecutive years.
  15. Gary Pert, Melbourne CEO, is under fire for his role in the handling of Oliverโ€™s situation.
  16. Oliver feels abandoned after following the club's off-field expectations to improve personally.
  17. Coach Simon Goodwin repeatedly praised Oliver's development but now faces the fallout of trade talks.
  18. Despite personal challenges, Oliver remains a top player, winning four best-and-fairest awards.
  19. The trade saga is another setback for Melbourne after the Joel Smith drugs suspension and other controversies.
  20. Christian Petracca, another Melbourne star, has also had grievances with the club.
  21. Dan Houston rejected a move to Melbourne after hearing about the club's cultural issues.
  22. Oliverโ€™s close relationship with captain Max Gawn adds further complexity to the trade.
  23. If traded, Geelong would likely pay most of Oliverโ€™s $1.4 million salary, with Melbourne potentially contributing.
  24. Melbourne may use the trade to reset its culture and salary cap, similar to Collingwoodโ€™s past rebuild.
  25. The trade could signal the end of Melbourne's premiership window, raising concerns among fans.

The situation highlights internal turmoil at Melbourne and Geelong's strategic opportunity to capitalise on the Demons' mismanagement of a star player.

F1, and Geelong pay most of the deal. Iโ€™d take ย that, all things considered.

Any word from this magical meeting that was supposed to happen to determine his future today?

Sure is, how bloody dumb are they to think this would be kept quiet.ย

ย

can someone please give a summary/update? i was under the impression that he/the club didn't want to trade him

Media pundits and some posters are talking as if Melbourne have no choice but to let Oliver join Geelong for whatever scraps we get in return.

Not so. It's time to get tough, tell other clubs to back off, and warn Oliver that the club will fine or suspend him for any further infractions.

Melbourne have given him a contract that ensures he can retire fromย  a game a wealthy man.ย

The club has also gone out of its way to support him when he experienced off-field problems that have had an adverse effect on the team's performance levels.

Metaphoricallyย  speaking, his response is apparently to kick Melbourne players, officials and fans in the teeth.

The notion of letting him leave for a likely mid-teens future draft pick, while still playing a hefty chunk of his salary, is frankly insane.

Having seen how the Petracca and Oliver sagas have played out, one thing is now certain. Very few clubs, if any, will be offering seven-year contracts, even to superstars.

Given they seem to be urging him to go to the BnF to potentially farewell the fans, you'd have to think it's not a positive outcome

I just love how in the same breath, they're talking about Bailey Smith not getting done for pick 15 and the Dogs wanting a little more.

What the absolute [censored] is this Clarry trade going to be worth and how will it get done?ย

He stays and everyone can GAGF

The 'List Management Committee' wtf is that? Who want's to bet it's run by Pert and includes me, myself and I?

That would be the List Management committee that every club has. Ours includes Lamb, Taylor, Goodwin and presumably Richardson.

Is it worth complaining about the media? That could help.ย

So just the footy department heads? And the reports that Goodwin doesn't approve of this move aren't true then?

Iโ€™m not down on the details of how player payments work, but why is cap space useful when we have no one on comparable money to trade in..?

Is the idea that we could then renegotiate other contacts so theyโ€™re front-ended and use the money another year??

ย

Clubs can front load contracts, which can be used in subsequent years.

The draft is inefficient due to drafting U18s and clubs can can pick up high quality AFL players without premium picks.

The draft is inefficient due to the academy systems and father son.

With free agency and the power of the key player agents, player movement is easy.

If things are actually beyond repair behind closed doors, I still think the calls to Geelong are an absolute last resort when all other options from every club are off the table.

Whatever happened to Adelaide? If he's gone, why are we not pushing him to meet with them again given he was open to a move there. They have the picks. That he's apparently wanting to go to Geelong, and their sycophant media brigade are now driving it for peanuts is an absolute kick in the guts from this club and I'd rather he sit on the sidelines and we work to recover it, than get a mid teens pick from them.

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.
