Michael Gleeson has reported on it.

Read the article.

One of the few journalists who has maintained credibility over a long career and doesn't chase a controversy for the clicks.

He's weighed in because he firmly believes what he has heard.

It's the club that has started this.

Clayton is on the market for the second year in a row at the clubs request. Clubs don't trade their best players for no reason, Clayton being traded is what the club believes is the best idea. He has less value now than he did last year and we will get  unders in return.

As reported, the club is in crisis.

It's time for us to accept it and stop trying to blame McClure, Morris and Gleeson for telling us the truth.

A sad time for the club, but the club lives on and the sun will rise tomorrow.

A bit rich, no?

It doesn't matter who he calls. If he has reached out in his capacity as a CEO, he has stepped into the list management lane, and he needs to be fired for it IMO.

I wonder if Pert would assume this role himself if TL were to be relieved of his duties..?

You know.. I’m finding myself increasingly moving in this direction. Maybe he has been the root of all problems culturally for several years now and we need to accept the short term pain to move forward for the next 5 years and beyond.

I’m also a little surprised at how outraged I’ve felt. He was not good this year.. and even when he was winning the ball, he was blindly throwing the ball on his boot, inevitably to an opposition player who would rebound the other way. Time and again. Opposition teams could rely on it.

Maybe him moving on will allow us to reset the culture. Maybe it is what is needed to satisfy Petracca. And maybe it will go some way to fixing our offensive issues.

I don’t know.. but maybe it would turn out to be the right thing..?

I think these are valid points. I also like the use of the word "Maybe". Football clubs are full of "let's make our own story!" If we are successful with Clarrie then it was the right thing to do. If not then maybe we should have moved him on when we had the chance. If he moves on during this trade period and we become successful again then we did the right thing moving him on. If we move him on and have another bad year then gee we missed Clarrie.

The funny thing is out of all four scenarios whichever one does come to fruition there will be a bunch of hindsight Harry's telling us how they knew this was going to happen!

Clarrie, as great a footballer as he is, has always come across as a little immature and easily lead. I can't help but feel that the genesis of much of this was when we seemingly did away with the 'no DH' rule. A recently retired player (and poor driver) who came to us from a West Melbourne club was a certified DH and, from all accounts, a son of a gun who cannot play for us for a while, if ever. smashed through the DH ceiling also.

His head was turned.

I may well be wrong but this has always been my gut feel.

It's not a disgrace it's fact he is a bad influence and should have been traded last year. I want people like him and Smith out of the club.

I will always maintain we should have shipped him last year and taken 4 first rounders to the draft. Heck, I was for sending Petty with him and taking 6.

Should have done the back burning last year when we could so we didn’t now have to put out this raging bushfire.

We were looking after the individual, not the player

Those wondering if there is anything in this potential trade situation, just listen to Cal T., he doesn’t go with stuff like this unless it’s legit, unlike others.

Clarry is the ginger-ninja.

Players who I have felt upset about leaving the MFC:

Jeff Farmer (to be honest, I can't remember my feelings that much).

Liam Jurrah (I thought we could still work it out).

Sam Frost (made football fun, but I got over it after a good breakfast).

If Clayton, Trac or Kysaiah leave, I'll probably take the opportunity as well.

Soft. But I'm sick of this abusive relationship.

And our own fans who constantly gaslight and fuel it.

Your post says more about you than what it does Clarry. He has been an amazing player for us, one of our best, ever. Who knows what someone is going through/experiencing that can often lead to certain, abnormal (for them) behaviours. How about you quit being such a child and show him some support. Since bombing out of the finals two seasons in a row, in straight sets, we’ve been low-hanging fruit for the media. Don’t blame Clarry for the media’s almost constant witch-hunt, over the last year or so, on our club. Consider how the media would react if one of our players found themselves in a situation similar to that of Stengle earlier this season? The media would have been unforgiving. Yet, Stengle, who plays for Geelong, has faced little to no backlash

Maybe.

I owe some people on here and apologies and I realise how rose coloured my views have been. Looking back I can see how I've stuck my head in the sand and thought thing would just turn out alright.

I'm as disappointed as everyone else.

As stated, Oliver doesn't want to leave

Club open to him staying

Pert goes and does his own thing.

And yet he opens up enquiries on other parts of the football club. He's a disgrace

Couldn't agree more. An alleged 'supporter' who is not a true supporter of this great football club. He also has a very bad memory.

Thinking outside of the box…. Melbourne are on the AFL’s watch list. Given the rumours which swirled around during the year and the incidents that allegedly occurred but haven’t been settled yet, the AFL may be the one pulling the strings here. They certainly have an interest in ensuring the AFL brand doesn’t get damaged any further and I’m sure their close connection with the media enabled them to quietly move Rothey on and steer the club in a different direction in terms of the board.

it may have been a tap on the shoulder from the AFL which led to Pert jumping on the phone. Not making excuses for him, just highlighting the fact that the AFL is involved in lots of stuff we don’t see.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
