Was anybody else surprised to see AMW taken off for Woewoden   AMW is a down under, inside defender with a rugby background perfect for those conditions and been playing well.  Woewodin is not soft but is more an outside defender like Bowey and McVee.  I thought it unbalanced us a bit.

Good call, I was surprised at this too, it did seem to throw us off a bit

I think you have taken a bit of licence there... Essendon aren't a top 4 side in reality.

I was reasonably confident we’d go well on the weekend as they are massive pretenders in terms of their results from a very easy draw.

Nothing would make me happier than them either missing out on the finals all together or making an elimination final only to lose. It’s a win-win either way.

Yes I though Bowey would get taken off. Kicking has gone off lately

Good point Stinga. I thought he was hard done by. I appreciate Woey getting a run but they took off the wrong player for me as well.

Interestingly, we've had some debate on this thread about whether we simply went 1v1 at stoppages or +1 at stoppages (as opposed to -1). In almost all these examples, we have a +1 at contest.

But you can also see, most of our numbers are defensive side of the contest.

Whitey's Twitter is great. I'm really liking the analysis.

Well said - I re-watched last night and also think Petty did ok.  Firstly put in as ruck from the start when Draper was fresh and it was kind of dry was a big ask for the guy.  He then competed hard when it was his turn - a big man in attack in the wet.

I watched the replay after the tennis last night and did not Come  down for the game from Brisvegas. (Weather and health for upcoming OS trip took precedence).

I must admit after reading many scripts on the ruck display I was most surprised when I saw Harry mixing it with all the other talls at bounces throw ins and in the packs. While He wasn’t the standout he definitely contributed his body and hands to the task and was not the pathetic player many of you have intimated. Remember he has not played in the ruck before and IMO he did not shy away at all in the contest. He may not have contested all the contests but by golly it was his intention to make his presence known when the game got up close and personal. It was not a big man’s night either so he also improved much better as the game wore on.

Not sure what the masses expected who regard Harry bashing each week as part of their post to D/Lers but he did quite a lot in the clinches and tried his heart out. And that’s what counted on Sat night. and what Goody expected.

A much more skilful game vs Freo will be needed and we all need all the players to be positive and be aggressive. Harry may mark like he did vs Cats and you would fancy his chances far greater than Fullerton or Verrall. Put your best footballers together and a little less height may not be noticeable. If you haven’t got the ability don’t expect a player to bridge the gap.
Remember the only standout side is Sydney and Freo  was in the Alice. Another day on Sunday snd we are an 8/10 goal better team than then.

Shout out to JVR Disco and all the youngsters who did their job and also our leaders  who all showed the footy world what our culture is when we get it right.

Reckon Clarry might be due for a blinder this week as he got better and better on the night.

We are up to our eye balls in the top8 fight and even a Sneaky top4 option should we maintain our form over the next 6 weeks.

We must be competitive on the ball and restrict their stars to average games and stand up to their team style game.

This is why I HATE the whole straight sets BS. We weren’t pathetic, we weren’t humiliated. Our finals campaign wasn’t embarrassing.

Had Melk not done his ACL in the final round and had Gus not been flattened, we absolutely would’ve made the grand final and probably would’ve won it.

Even without those two incidents, had Tracc’s legit goal been paid in the semi we would’ve been hosting a prelim and who knows where we’d end up.

The results of those two losing finals ARE NOT a reflection of who we were and of what we were capable.

Spot on WCW.

JM back for two games equals two victories. I wish he came back a week earlier for the narrow lions loss but he did extremely well coming straight back in with a no pre season or time at Casey. (good call from the Fd).

With JM back we have kicked 100 points plus and without the rain probably another 100 against the bummers. Not too shabby. Jake had a big  hand in more than goals he kicked himself.

And props to Rivers who has really stepped up in Traccas absence.

I'm just loving the zip we have from our young players especially Windsor who a few weeks ago I thought looked a little cooked.

I hope AMW gets a full game next week and isn't subbed off . And I love the tango..(.he loves to dance with others in a not so subtle way) in  the colts step and the disco in Turners and the two step with young Windsor's speed and Mcvees rock and roll over others.

Same with Jake Melksham who is listed at only one cm taller than Mcvee at 186 cm.

Bowser was pretty good too at one stage during the match. 176cm vs 2 metre Peter:

Someone needed to go.  Disappointed.

quite like monners. Especially after watching the replay and there he was right in Stringers face   Not giving an inch, well 100mm in height but straight into his face.

loved it.

Agree with most other things you have said but Essendon's season to date was:

2 wins v West Coast (by 6p and 30p)

1 win v North

Wins v St Kilda Richmond Adelaide, Dogs, Giants (when they were poor) and a decent win against Collingwood.

Despite their easy draw their percentage was only 14th best in the league at 99.9%

Nonetheless it was a test for us and its always brilliant to beat them

Well technically before Saturday they were despite all the close calls, draw and anything else.

I mean we were tenth when it could be argued that if we had won our close ones against lions and blues we would have been second even before the bombers games.

But  agree, the season is so close it's hard to gauge who the real players are.

Last year's gfs...are suspect.Cwood are way overated but they did thump us but the  Lions are making a late Dash.

Even Sydney are failing against bottom teams.

Port look hot then cold.

Cats are all over the shop.

I think probably the biggest threat is the emerging Dockers who we sadly face this weekend at home without Max.

Win this and I predict we will be top four come the end of the year. But it will be a very tough game to win.

Umpiring was terrible but I thought we were as lucky in the first quarter, as Essendon were in the last with a number of questionable decisions so I guess it evened out.

Essendons ability to put scoreboard pressure was their biggest problem, would have been a different game if they kicked straight

This game may become a turning point, not for this year, but next as our young talent is now really making it's mark and we should be able to put a much better team on the field next year

Agree we got away with a couple in tge first.

I'd be ropeable if I was a bombers fan with that non mark straight in front. A mark every day of tge week.

It was crucial too because they were on top and really needed to take advantage of the momentum when they had it.

Game would have looked different if they had a 3 goal lead at quarter time instead of one point.

Well, it could be ...

We have dipped our toes into the 'mongrel' puddle and whilst it was deep with much riding upon the wet-shoe outcome, we came out the other side absolute victors ...

Tenacious Dixon, cannot forget how much he played '...above his weight' with an admirable degree of courage, 'mongrel' and speed. Lousey kick, but lots of 'em in the hard stuff.

Been reported that Langers ran almost 18 kms against the bombers.

He probably ran home after the game too. The bloke is super fit.

Great to see him return to his best.

so if somebody is on the ground they can be cop head high contact with no consequence?

interesting opinion

The way I see it because Draper essentially initiated the contact it's not a free kick against Disco, Turner did everything reasonable in his power to avoid the contact in a similar way to players lowering their legs to get taken high don't get the high tackle free kick.
